Afrihost Capped ADSL Feedback (MTN) - New beginning

Evening Guys!

At the moment the link to our Local Google Cache is still down, so the routing is currently running internationally, so you may see services such as Google Drive, and Youtube not quite where they should be.

MTN should have the link restored later tonight still.

In the meantime, switch to 196.7.7.7 with 8.8.8.8 as the preferred DNS servers on your ADSL modems seem to help a bit.

Any movement on this? I have sent pingplotter graphs, pings, trace routes and speedtest to the helpdesk. You have logged 2 tickets with Telkom and those have been closed, with no real improvement. Its been more than a month now and we are still no closer to a solution. I am slowly starting to lose my cool on this now.

Using pingplotter I can see that the normal pingtime on the 3rd hop is around 20-25ms, which is not great, but acceptable. However, on a regular basis I see jitter of 300ms+ on that hop. On a few occassions it was more than 500ms. The ping time would go up to to 300ms+ for a few seconds and then come back to 20ms.

Normally this would not be an issue, but if you are trying to watch a video streaming, it causes the video to start buffering. If this happens every few minutes, it becomes very anoying. (And no, I cannot download the video, or tell it to buffer while I go make coffee.)

Please I need to watch the videos in order to complete a distance learning course I am doing and there is a deadline to when it must be done by. Can somebody please look at it urgently and come back to me with a solution.

The ticket is #TOP-728-52604 and the website with the videos is projectmanagement.com. Although this is not something specific to when the videos are streaming. It happens all the time, any time of the day and week. It is just that much more anoying then I am trying to stream a video.

Bump. This is burried 20 pages deep already.

I know your team probably have bigger fish to fry right now, but can you give me any indication when I am going to get a reply? Its been 6 days now and I have not even received an acknowledgement or a call from anybody that the matter is being looked at, nevermind an ETR.

Go to webafrica's homepage. You can order a 1GB ADSL test account for free! Hope the 1Gb is enough to watch your video.

At the moment I can't give you a firm ETA, we definitely know about rising latency when demand is at it's peak in the evenings (depending on the region you're in). We're hoping we'll be able to offer clients access to the new network(s) ASAP, but I can't say when that will be. Gian did mention that it could be within couple of weeks.

1GB will be enough for 1-2 videos, but I have many more to watch. Also I do not think this is a AH problem. I suspect it is a Telkom problem, but as I am paying AH to handle Telkom on my behalf, it is up to AH to get it fixed. Point being, it wont help to move ISP to solve this issue.

Use it to test it. It's free. No commitment. Seriously. Run a speed test then you know for sure if it's AH or Telkom.

Have you tried using the Telkom ADSL guest account to test line speed?

This is not answering my question. Please read my question and reply to that. When will your Critical Care team look at my issue as you promised earlier?

Or are you telling me that my issue is part of the whole network issue and will take more than two weeks to fix? If that is the case, then I might just follow manu55's advice and look at a different ISP. :(

I don't know if you've PM'd me with the results you're getting. If it's a line issue, then this is something we can definitely put some juice into to get resolved :(

I think I might have missed an earlier context relating to the question you asked. Best if we chat over PM. If you're already with Critical Care, then I can follow up but I'll need your details to trace the escalation.

I see it was AfriGenie who replied the first time. I have sent a PM.

ETA: The details are all in ticket #TOP-728-52604 , which I opened 16 May, more that a month ago.

Pretty fed up with this level of service from AH.
I've sent an email to the myBB editors. They might be more successful than we have been getting real answers from AH.
Absolutely fed up with the - it's so damn sensitive to be discussed - rubbish!
Sweet... it worked. This article clearly prompted the response from Gian - http://mybroadband.co.za/news/adsl/130712-massive-afrihost-adsl-problems.html
My faith in the power of media is intact however why it takes such to get answers is beyond me.

The issue though, which I've noted on Gian's thread is that there are no real answers. I'm interested in my present experience not a future utopia.

Exactly. Name the current problem because we've been told it's not ipc capacity or shaping. But I think we will never know...

Unless these two "Proof of Concept" networks are not running on MTN's backbone I don't see how it is going to solve anything.
Simply moving users around within the same IPC limitations is not going to free up any capacity.

If, on the other hand, it is a new network, independent of MTN, then it answers the question:

Name the current problem because we've been told it's not ipc capacity or shaping. But I think we will never know...

The current problem will be shown to be MTN.

It was actually the other way around. Gian had published his letter long before the article, so we actually had already answered most of the questions for Jan and MyBB.

Gian reads MyBB regularly, and I think it was his intention to post something for a while, but he's been deep in negotiations and plans involving the new networks.

I think explanations we've given are as comprehensive as we can provide, relating to demand and our available resources. We've done our best to work with the tools we have to maximise the potential on our current network, but I think it's just making more and more sense to have more direct network control so that we can implement some of the ideas we have (and more transparency to our clients).

As we progress, we'll be able to reveal more of what we have in mind for the future, and I do believe this is a step in the right direction.

I can't give any specific details right now, but it will definitely not be using the same IPC as our current network. Both networks (POC) will be using independent IPC, so they will also be entirely separate environments so that we can measure them independently and assess the performance and feedback to make a decision on going forward.

No real answer

Guys, with the fear of sounding like a fanboy, maybe give AH a break. They are obviously working on something big which they cannot divulge at the moment.

One question I do have for Gian or Afriman, whichever, is: Once you have done the POC, how long before you go to Prod with it?

Okay, maybe two questions: How long are you running your POC for?

Ive started moving clients back to IS. Cant work like this in a professional environment. These are not home connections for gaming, they are business connections to run a business. This has just happened one too many times.
