Good god. Latency went through the roof. 600 ms to local severs. Jeez. What's going on at Afri-host of problems.....

Websites take a age to load.

CPT area!

Our team are aware of the issues in the South IPC area, affecting CPT.

I wish I could read this, and not feel a little frustrated by it. Either I have a really bad understanding of how an unshaped connection works, or there are "unmentioned" factors to this statement.

Explain the following scenario:
10mbps exchange, syncing at ~6mbps, using an Afrihost capped account.

When I try watch twitch.tv video streams, I can't watch in 380p without the video stopping to buffer every 15 seconds. When I download from my FTP server with 100mbps upload, I struggle to get an average of 150kbps download. Regardless of countless port resets, modem resets, turning the connection off for a day, and so on these issues remain.

So you must be thinking, well is must be a line issue or congestion or some Telkom related problem? Well that's what I've been told by every Afrihost person I've spoken to. So what's the catch?

Using the exact same line, I connect to my backup MWeb capped account. Twitch.tv streams are now perfect (not even a stutter) in 1080p+ (source quality), and my FTP downloads run at a consitent 680kbps, until the file is downloaded - I've tested a 15Gb file.

Well maybe its just a fluke, and the routing I happen to get when redialing the connection is better? I've done this experiment 10 times in a row - Afrihost was terrible 10 times, MWeb was perfect 10 times. I've taken videos to prove to the scenario to Afrihost support people.

So what's the explanation - surely if I am unshaped, I should achieve the best result regardless of whether I am on MWeb or Afrihost? The difference is quality is absolutely undeniable.

Reading some posts where it was said that Twitch works perfect with WebAfrica as apposed to Afrihost, I decided to do my own tests. I have a 10Mb line capped account. I have no issues normally except with Twitch, so tonight I watched a channel with Afrihost and generally it was OK, would buffer perhaps twice a minute for a about 3-5seconds each time. I then swopped to the free 1GB WebAfrica account and the results where the same. I did this a few times with different streams on Twitch and Afrihost and WebAfrica performed exactly the same!

Reading some overseas forums, it seems everybody has issues with Twitch, even guys in the US with 50Mb lines!

The only perfect streaming I ever had most if not all the times is from vimeo. The rest like Youtube and Twitch has always been **** to say the least. Having said that the last time I tested Twitch (at that time) using my 6mbs business uncapped it was fine without issues. I even made a youtube video to proof it...

Afriguy, I want to suspend my capped account for 2 months and want to go pay as you go for the period, did submit a ticket and wait I have to do it before the 25th to activate for the next month right?

Anyone experiencing sluggish speeds today? (Sluggish as in 50-100KB/s)

Reinstalled Windows today and it took me forever to grab VLC, Razer Synapse and everything else.
I dropped my 10Meg to 8Meg for in case, but the issue persists.

Then like now I install Adobe Acrobat and ..... since it grabs it from a local mirror, it pounds away at line speed.

My latency to afrihost.com remains normal (as in 11ms).

I know someone that is wanting to change to a capped account. They are looking at the Web Africa 40GB + 40 GB account - they prefer that to the 60 GB Afrihost capped account as they schedule their downloads for night anyway. Now I know some people have said they have been getting a "Mystery Bonus" on their capped accounts.

If they signed up for the 50 GB R297 capped bundle, what would they effectively be getting each month? I think they would definitely go the Afrihost route if they were to get say 100GB or so.

Well I got this reply from Afrihost support last night, "To answe the mystery bonus question yes we do provide clients in 2MB and 50GB bundle mystery bonus every month meaning they would get at least 80GB or so. They Mystery Bonus is random."

And then this morning, "I would like to clarify some details. The mystery bonus that we provide is not guaranteed to be every month nor is it guaranteed to provide double the data when made available. At the moment we only have double data specials on capped accounts without the adsl line rental included."

Which is correct?

Both I guess, that's the mystery part ;)

EDIT: Rather unbundle and get double data.

Thanks for posting this - I honestly don't know what is up with Twitch. Have tested it and gotten good results myself, but I guess it all depends on the stream and how popular it is.

You can submit a pause request in ClientZone for the period you don't want to be billed on that product. Then you should be able to use a prepaid product or use a Free GB account and then just top up as you need. Make sure you maximise on 2 for 1 (when it's running) in that case.

Sounds like the problem could be where the Windows content, etc is cached. Adobe might be more popular and cached on a local CDN or one we peer directly with.

The mystery bonus changes everything month, so it's hard to say. Also, you get a mystery percentage of your monthly data added on as a top up, so it could be 15% or 100%, just depends on the promo that get's run.

We are hoping to change capped bundles very soon, so I would advise your friend to keep his eyes on us :)

Mystery bonuses are a seasonal promotion, that we've been running for capped bundles for the last 2-3 months. This is while we figure out how to pass on the value of Capped Double Data to Capped Bundle Clients. They are never intended to be a guaranteed monthly promotion, however we do expect to continue to give them Capped Bundle clients until we figure out how we'll be changing Capped Bundles for the future.

Yes.... but what about my international content? That's where the problem lies.

I don't know what is going on but I have had e-mail problems since the weekend. Afriman, is there a problem with your server?

I don't know that there is a problem with our connectivity over WACS or EASSy, but there could be an issue elsewhere. Where do you see things go pear-shaped on a traceroute?

Seems like there may have been some SMTP issues related to DNS - but not sure that this is what is causing your issues.

Can you give me some more detail about what problems you're having. Can you PM me?
