What I don't understand is why everyone in the South is not experiencing this. Seems to be limited to a few users. If I haven't asked this before, does it only happen on the Afrihost network - that your second hop times out?

roadcat suggested earlier that this may be a fault on the new MSAN in the area :(

Beri is on a different exchange and not on a MSAN. So it affects both VDSL/ADSL, different exchanges. Different ISP account has the same result so it points to a configuration issue on Telkom side. I would say on the layer 3 (IP) side as it affects routing and ICMP (ping/tracert). Telkom assign the ranges at that level I think.

It's not congestion related, as it is always the same, and telkom test account latency is perfect.

You have my line, so possibly log a call on Telkom to investigate? Throughput isn't affected, just latency so not critical.

BTW - is Port recreate working now for VDSL? I haven't tried that yet as the last time I did it it seemed to break the port configuration on the MSAN. Telkom had to reconfigure the port and I was down for 2 days :) That was a while ago now, more than 6 months..

Panorama is always down when I check the SAIX noticeboard so I think there are some serious problems there. I don't think we can log an exchange fault though - Telkom looks after the exchange exclusively :(
I won't say the downtime is affecting connectivity, it is just sluggish from around 18:00 weekdays.

Ping my IP continuously if you want to test: 105.237.109.12

Anybody struggling to connect AGAIN in Cape Town tonight??? WTF is MTN doing load shedding like Eskom now? Rebooted router several times now and still nothing!

I'm authenticated but speed is up to **** like usual. 40Mbit barely worth of being called 10Mbit.

Good thing this is just my backup account, still going to continue posting these tests until they fix the issue.

EDIT: Some reference:

Evening guys

We are receiving reports of client unable to authenticate new sessions on our broadband network, including DSL and Mobile Data. Our network engineers are currently investigating with MTN to determine the cause of this. Some clients may be unable to connect to the internet due to this problem. Client who are already connected should remain connected, and we encourage not to reboot their routers until the problem has been resolved. We sincerely apologise to affected clients for the inconvenience.

Really sorry about the downtime :(

I hope you're getting paid lots of overtime ;)

Sounds like auth problems. If your DSL was fine but internet was red, you were probably affected by it :(
Yes DSL was fine.
I have to say, with all the years I was with Mweb, 10 years to be exact, with all their throttling and shaping, never once was I disconnected or had any interruption to my service at all.
In the last 6 months with AH, I have bought 3 modems, all in desperation and frustrated connections like this, due to lost Internet etc, having to change DNS's etc........
It makes one wonder which is the worse of the 2 evils.... maybe Mweb is still the best bet :(

@AfriMan what is up with your authentication issues all the time!!!!!? I'm disconnected again. And afrihost keeps passing the buck to telkom.

why does your support team then tell people when they call in to reboot their routers?

Just cancelled my Afrihost capped account. Crap speeds even after upgrading my line. Will try another provider and check their offerings out.

Afrihost really gotta sort their **** out... Service lately has been atrocious, thoroughly disappointed and frustrated. Getting terrible pings, sometimes I can't even stream properly on my 10mbps line. Not the service I've come to expect based on previous experience with them.
Giving it a few more weeks before I jump ship to another ISP. It honestly astounds me how quickly the level of service can degrade, and how this has been allowed to happen!!!

I know these authentication issues are pretty dreadful. I can promise that we're as motivated to get rid of them as much as anyone else. I'm sure our network team don't enjoy working 24 hours a day trying to sort them out :(

They are definitely happening too often and this is a priority for us. I promise that no effort is being spared and were working at the highest level with MTN to find the right solution :(

The authentication problem of the last two nights is not Telkom related, though in initial troubleshooting I can imagine this may have been suggested. This is definitely between us and MTN. I promise we're taking this very seriously and we're gonna keep working until we can get this problem sorted out in full :(

why does your support team then tell people when they call in to reboot their routers?

They shouldn't be, it's not a great idea. I guess if you have no connectivity it can't hurt, and we usually see some intermittent authentication, so you could reconnect. But if they gave the impression that this was the whole issue, then that's not cool. It's a network/systems issue on our side, not on your line or home network :(
