You avoid sky high contention and massive latency by not over-selling your products, and ensuring that your contention ratios are sufficiently low to cater for periods of peak demand.

Any "protection" that you build in is most definitely shaping.

It has been avoided by running constant upgrades and tweaks, demand does spike though - which has happened here.

lets not beat around the bush here, leave all the congestion/line issues etc etc to the side. its not relevant to what Im talking to

please explain to me, why as a capped user Im am seeing that APPEARS to be shaping... when I know its not. Its actually you "protecting" the network, because of your poor planning.

The bottom line is that the result is the same, and right now I sit with a 20mb line that is capped, unshaped but PROTECTED into the ground.

On what grounds to you decide that P2P gets the axe?

Do you understand where I am going with this?

I fully understand that you're upset about this, but the demand is here and we're dealing with it as best we can.
We're learnt a lot and know that situations like this aren't ideal, and we're really sorry about that.

As I mentioned earlier, upgrades are on the way which will see everything return to normal.

be that as it may, I still want to discuss it further. so,

on what grounds do you decide that P2P gets the axe on my capped account?

Because it's the heaviest protocol on any network.

Which you have had to axe, because you didnt have enough margin to play with when the demand arrived. to be frank, not my problem really.

I've had 15 days of useless internet in the evening. From Skype, to downloads, to Youtube and even Streaming my shows.

I want my money back for this month, and Im not joking.

A spike in demand is just a spike, it doesn't persist for 5-6 weeks. A spike that lasts that long is just bad planning. And during a spike performance will degrade, but in a neutral manner, with all protocols equally affected. If all protocols are not treated equally, as seems to be the case here, what you have, in effect, is shaping.

And I apologise for the slow speeds, but improvements are being seen and implemented.
I can't authorise/ action a redund, sorry. This is something that's up to Management.

That is a piss poor response. You guys have got a lot to work on still. I will be cancelling and moving asap, and will make damn sure people I know dont do business with Afrihost again.

Even Telkom gave me a refund for a few weeks my line wasnt working.

Im disgusted.

We've seen savings passed on in the past, but I can't promise anything.
Sorry to see you leave, although I can understand your reasons. Best of luck going forward :)

@Afriman/Afriguy: Guys is there a specific reason why International is performing well, but local (CPT) is all but dead??? I expect IPC congestion to impact both equally - unless of course Intl is being prioritized?

I've had exactly the same experience a couple of days ago.

Intl: 8Mbps - http://speedtest.ookla.com/result/2731387053.png
Local: D.E.A.D. Terrible Latency as well - http://speedtest.ookla.com/result/2731390545.png

Hhhhmm, very odd results.
Do you have a local traceroute that I can look at?

All normal here.
Drop me a PM with your DSL username and I'll see what I can spot :)

I am still confused as hell about this capped account story.
Are they being shaped/controlled/managed whatever in any way?

If that's the case then why not just stay on a home uncapped account?
I see lots of to-ing and fro-ing but no clear cut answers.
I think I may have made a boeboe by switching to a capped account........
