Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

I looked at a trace route and I could see you were being routed via the South, so I don't think we're misallocating you're traffic.

I can look further into this for you, but it's most likely something to do with Speedtest's geolocation features.

Something similar on our side. One line shows JHB other DBN. Both lines routing differently.

I can confirm, tonight is dismal again. 10 Meg line, Johannesburg:

Afrihost:

Webafrica:

Definitely not looking good on our side. Latency seems similar so it's definitely throughput on the account, judging solely from these results.

We'll keep accumulating this feedback and providing this to our technical team as they try to improve client's experience. Hopefully they can make some drastic improvements soon, I know this very poor performance for a 10Mbps line :(

Ok so quite a few people from across the country complain that Afrihost's down speed is much worse than other ISP's during the same time. Are they still going to say it isolated? What is the cause of this??

As I've mentioned in previous posts, we ran updates on the network management devices over the weekend, and this seems to be a precursor to the issues we're seeing here. Our team are investigating to see what could have changes and what is the most effective way to deliver improved performance for now and in the long term.

Prior to this, speeds and overall performance have been generally better across the country since we upgraded all our IPC.

I think us in W Cape got a IPC downgrade with the AfriHost "upgrade" to
compensate the rest of the country. It so sucks.

Of COURSE network status is green - no problems. WTF!

Definitely not the case. The South received a full upgrade. In fact, the South received probably the biggest upgrade (percentage wise) due to the increased demand we've noticed, so we definitely have not neglected our clients in the region.

:wtf:

Something is very wrong... MTN borked on Afrihost.

It could be an issue at the data centre or just a slow server. I'm not sure at which facility MTN house their speedtest servers (I think they have multiple ones in each city).

Like I keep saying, Afrihost is a thing of the past.

Move on chaps

You are definitely entitled to your own opinion, but I don't think the objective of this thread to is debate this. If you've moved on, I totally accept that and I wish you well.

But please let us carry on with trying to give our clients a good experience, and by all means move on.

Doesn't quite work like that. I'll keep voicing my opinion and I'm quite entitled too. Yes I've moved on, but afrihost have me locked in for another month.

People are still not happy and it's the right thing to do that more people visiting this thread are aware of that.

Whether you like that or not, is irrelevant.

The objective of this thread is for mybroadband members to exchange and express their opinions on Afrihost CAPPED ADSL.
Whilst the participation of your good self and your colleagues greatly enhances the value of the thread and is greatly appreciated by the community, it remains a discussion thread for the members. It is not owned or moderated by Afrihost.
If you object to what a person has to say you are encouraged to use the report this post button to bring it to a moderator's attention. Attempting to moderate the thread yourself is bad PR.

The purpose of the thread is to give feedback and work towards giving clients a better experience. That is not your purpose. I don't think trying to encourage others to make the same choices as you is appropriate, but how you choose to spend your time is up to you.

If your frustration is around being locked in for another month, then drop me a PM and let's see what we can do. We always do what we can to help our clients, so I promise I will do my best to help you here.

If you read the Mod's note on various Feedback threads, it clearly says it's a thread for active clients to interact with official reps to find ways to improve service and communication between the company and their clients. I think it's in everyone's interests to keep to the topic. The thread is active because most visitors want that, so I think it's not fair to use this thread to voice an opinion of the company where that should actually be posted in a separate thread with an appropriate title to reflect what the purpose of that thread is.

"Mod_note: These threads are clearly designed/intended for customers to provide feedback to their respective ISPs - not for disgruntled former customers to vent, not for other ISPs to promote their services, etc - and, one hopes, for the relevant ISP to respond."

Used zertop's tool to trace, and found this weird traceroute result:

Tracing route to 105.236.4.193 over a maximum of 30 hops

1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms 192.168.10.1
2 * 10 ms 9 ms 105.236.4.193
3 32 ms 10 ms 10 ms 41.181.221.254
4 28 ms 12 ms 11 ms 41.181.198.188
5 11 ms 11 ms 10 ms 41.181.184.31
6 35 ms 11 ms 11 ms 41.181.203.93
7 13 ms 10 ms 11 ms 105.236.4.193

Trace complete.

You'll see 105.236.4.193 is on hop 2 and hop 7. What is going on here?

Looks like he's pinging an internal IP within the network, so it's probably created a loop of sorts.

Better to ping a known IP like 8.8.8.8, that resolves to a destination that makes sense.

Within the AH network, or my home network?

That IP is actually within Telkom's network, even though a lookup with label it as MTN Business. As I understand it this is a router at the BRAS, which is the Telkom infrastructure that assigns realms and IP addresses.
