Looks like Afrihost are shaping their capped products despite the claim that they are unshaped.Busy downloading via usenet and only getting 50% - 75% of line speed.Switched over to WA and speeds are running 100%.Rarely download during the day so only noticed this now. Will continue to test but if this is the case will definitely be taking this further with ASA etc

We absolutely, 100% do NOT shape capped DSL, ever, and under any circumstances. Even when there are outages, we never, ever touch Capped speeds or priority. If you're not getting ideal speeds on a download, that could be due to several factors, it depends on how many threads you are running, and how well we are routing to that particular network.

Please drop me a PM and I'll have our guys run some tests to get further with this, but we are definitely NOT shaping capped DSL - EVER!!

Thanks, have already submitted a ticket but will revert if I don't receive pure Afrihost joy.Why would my Webafrica account be running at 100% on the same download?

We'd have to determine that from testing. It's not really possible to comment from the info I have :(

It can vary according to all sorts of factors, your local exchange, load on the closest BRAS (Telkom's IP allocation units) and how long it takes for us to receive the authentication request. A minute isn't too long to wait, I would imagine. Five minutes or more points to some kind of issue, possibly on the line if the SNR or ATT is not what it should be so multiple requests are being sent before they go through.

In the beginning of January 2013 when we first got ADSl, it would take about 10 to 15 seconds after the router was powered up and all LED's showed green and the LED for connection would go green, now I usually wait for 5 minutes then reboot. Longest I have seen that little LED on the router stay red before turning green is almost half an hour.
Problem? Definately.

Check the cable joints in your house/flat/accommodation. I had a corroded joint in my lounge where the cable came through the wall. I sweet talked Telkom (Difficult we both male) else he would have have charged me.

Hey all,
Want to send out kudo's to AfriMan and the AfriHost team re the Bandwidth Use issue.
They were responsive, clear, and sorted out the issue for me without my prompting any action. Great support.
Thanks AfriMan!
Rgds,
SD.

Ditto this, my data was restored and credits passed on the top-ups I made as a result of the glitches.

Really impressed with the prompt support and solution - Big Ups to Ayrton at Afrihost- responded and sorted within 4 minutes of logging the ticket......and that on a Saturday evening.

I don't know who did what, but I am currently downloading, streamed a Youtube vid at 720p with no issues (then tried it at 1080p, and also no issues while downloading), my PC is connected for the downloading obviously, Mom-in-law's PC is connected and she is browsing and the SO's iPod is connected via Wifi and she is downloading audio books and everything is running like a charm!

Thanks guys! Like I said, I don't know who did what, but I am extremely impressed!

Great to hear it's back to normal again! :)

Hi,

I'm thinking about signing up at the end of this month for a capped package with Afrihost. I just want to find out what happens with cap that is not used up at the end of the month. Does it roll over to the next month?

Only our prepaid accounts roll over their data, our normal monthly capped accounts have the bandwidth available for the duration of the month.

Noticed recently there has been issues with the D-Link 2750u router and DNS resolution on Afrihost. After having recently swopped from Afrihost 4Mbps uncapped to a 10Mbps capped account I have noticed quite severe DNS resolution problems. Having read the network status advise, I checked the router DNS settings which were already set to ISP sourced (196.7.7.7/196.7.8.9) but was still suffering with 'server not found errors'. Yesterday I experimented with entering the values directly. Since then I have yet to experience a problem. Maybe other 2750u users can confirm

The issue with D-Link routers was related to pre-configured DNS settings which we could not identify as they were external to our network. Our assumption (not verified) is that the servers were setup by Telkom, and seem to be intermittently failing. Hence we recommended clients to move to dynamic DNS from our network.

If you are already using our DNS, then this is most likely an unrelated issue, though it does seem to sound like an irregularity on your routers treatment of DNS. Have yo made sure the you've done all the firmware updates on the router?

I thought 196.7.7.7 is Afrihost!?
What address are you talking about?

Yes, that is our primary default DNS. That's why I said it's most likely not related to the D-Link issues we have posted notifications recently, which related to other DNS servers pre-programmed into Telkom issued routers
