Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Soon the upgrades will be in place, and things will start improving dramatically.
This is now the 4th time AH is in a pinch:
1. Initial Uncapped launch after R29
2. Uncapped comeback
3. ± 4 months back
4. Fast forward to today

IMHO this is does not bode well and perhaps...

we where right after all and the MTN move was not a good choice or you should not have dipped into the pricing as you did.

The more important question then is: How long is this fix going to last?

:EDIT

I'll leave this here

What changed on your network and user-base that all of a sudden pushed demand so high, while other ISPs have not seen the demand being pushed up to the same extent?

If it's not the customers changing their behaviour, then the "demand is high" line is completely fabricated PR spin, and tries to offload the blame on us for "using too much data".

If there was no demand spike, then blaming us (customers) is unethical. Would "Insufficient capacity" not be the correct term?

And why, if there was no massive usage spike across your entire userbase, was IPC not ordered months ago, considering the previous problems you faced when ordering IPC and the subsequent delays?

Also, if demand spiked, why did you not do something about the protocols being used that resulted in the demand spike? Seems like you have, but continue to claim that the accounts are not being shaped.

And why does your network notice still state that all is fine?

And why are you accepting new signups if you are aware that maximum capacity has already been breached?

I can't dispute that we have had issues in the past, I think this partly has to do with Afrihost growing as quickly as it has, and also how our client's usage patterns have evolved over time.

I think the reason that the increase in network demand across other ISPs is less noticeable because they simply have not grown as rapidly as Afrihost has. I have been with Afrihost for two years this month, and trust me what I say, the last 6-months have seen Afrihost grow considerably! We have had to increase our Support Team massively and far faster than any other time in the past.

You could perhaps argue that we should have predicted this growth, but at times most businesses keep the margins tight to ensure they do not over-extend themselves, and this can be problematic at times.

I started around the time we moved over from the IS ADSL network to MTN, and was at Afrihost when it was announced that MTN had acquired a majority stake in the company, and I can with utter honestly say this has had zero impact on the day to day running of Afrihost. The only change perhaps has been our level of co-operation with MTN, which now allows us to get the changes that we need done in place significantly faster than in the past.

I'm getting anything from 1mb to 2.5mb on a 4mb capped line. Really frustrating. I moved from Mweb to avoid this.

Any chance Afrihost can actually communicate an actual date of when they expect to fix this?

Looks like it's definitely better this morning :)

Well compared to this morning I'm back to this

You can't tell me they're suddenly experiencing an increase in demand again? I can understand if maybe a big update came out so now everyone is downloading but this is on a Sunday evening where nothing new is out? So this is just regular usage from everyone surely?

How often have we heard exactly that promise? A dozen times, maybe more? Afriwhatever, you know as well as all your clients that at the point the upgrade is in place it'll be already too little too late. :(

It cant be 'upgrades'

Check speeds at 4am. Still no speed. Obviously something else.....

Unbundled and downgraded my account to 10GB.

Weeks of "soon" being thrown around. Still no official communication regarding the ongoing issues. I'm out.

my speed tests are hovering at 4mbps on a 10mbps line ... ive never had this ever since ive had a 10mbps line ... as has been echoed before, i think people want definites and not broad generalizations of the problem being fixed. TBH i think AH should firstly admit there is a problem ... because i get the impression that AH is playing cloak and dagger games with us and not totally forthcoming?

and guys are right ... there is competition ... so jumping ship for most aint an issue ... just something to be aware of

Amazing. I can't get a constant 360p YouTube stream but my uTorrent is going at line speed. A+ for the prioritisation guys. I see the shaper software upgrade is doing some real good.

Morning Capped peeps

I just wanted to share the good news that the EAST has been upgrades and we're already seeing immediate improvement in performance. We're busy now playing with the optimization of the resources so that we can determine what the best use of the capacity will be.

This is also hopefully a good indicator that the rest of our upgrades are not far behind. Obviously it depends on the local Telkom resources, but we expect all to go well from here. Will post more updates when I get them

Unfortunately I don't have a confirmed but date, but seeing that the East has been upgraded, I would imagine the other regions are not far behind. It really depends on when Telkom's people are going to be available.

I don't think that this will be the case at all, We've calculated the rate of contention and forecast exactly how much bandwidth could be required in order to ensure the best service. Obviously we'll also be wary of ordering too much to keep costs low and competitive, but I expect that clients will see immediate improvement, provided trends in usage don't change from current patterns.

After exactly 4 years i cancelled :( then thought about it and re-activated and just downgraded the account to 4gb capped instead.
hope you guys get better, i will be back (on a higher cap) if you guys go back to the awesome bunch we know you can be.

I don't know what definite answers we can give without being false. We could say it's coming tomorrow, and then just hope for the best and say definitely tomorrow until it eventually becomes true. The reality is that we don't have a date and we have the same broad assurances from Telkom, it could be literally any moment to day or a week from from. In the past we've eve been given confirmed dates that have not materialised so we'd rather make sure that our client have the most reliable information as we get it.

I totally understand and I appreciate that you're leaving the door open. We've always bounced back with a vengeance for our clients, and we'll be back on top very soon :)
