Hi,

Having exactly the same issue as prodegy with packet loss. Afrihost account I have terrible packet loss playing lol on EUW, and have 0 packet loss on WebAfrica.

Edit: Full speed download etc, ping is fine. Only issue is the packet loss.

Random attempting to connect at times on LoL while I can see all the heroes running around. Same for Smite, except total dc there for a bit and it all catches up in super speed mode.

I don't think it's a throughput issue at all, I have a feeling something strange or off is happening with the DNS masking, and this is preventing the content from streaming.

I tried unotelly and same result. Doesn't start streaming at all.

Switched to my WA account and smooth streaming in HD. Bearing in mind that my WA account is uncapped and 1/5th the speed of my AH account.

Any suggestions?

Bittorrent isn't looking great I must say, getting a lil bit ridiculous again?

What is up guys? 6mb line is normally a lot faster than this..

That second hop is basically your Telkom Exchange which is no longer responding to ICMP requests, which means your Exchange will no longer appear on your traceroutes.

Which DNS servers is your modem using at the moment?

My 5 cents

Hi guys:)

Most of us have been experiencing increased latency and packet loss accompanied by slow speeds. I'm one of those guys who would just keep quite and shrug it off, blame Telkom, Eskom, the state of the country, Obama, global warming, whatever floats your boat. There are many people like me, I would actually say most customers are.

Over the past 2 weeks latency and pack loss have been quite the problem for me, it has been all over the place, from working perfectly fine for an hour or so to just completely degenerating into something worse than a 56k dial up connection.

I almost exclusively play online games( not a heavy downloader or content consumer) , so naturally when I consistently get 400-1000ms ping with 40-100% packet loss for every game I played that connected to EU servers( Ahhh the glorious feeling of getting booted from a game:confused:), I became a bit desperate.( Tested in BF3, Firefall, Nosgoth and War Thunder)

I then decided for the week to try out different ISP's via their trial account offers or cheap packages, first tried Axxess ( exact same problem, right down to the consistency of the packet loss and ping), went on to Mweb ( worked as expected, minor ping fluctuations 180-220ms, youtube was on the slow side), then got a 2meg uncapped package from Openweb, For SCIENCE!( a bit worse than Mweb, haven't used it enough to experience their trade mark throttling though), I then stumbled upon Web Africa ( exceptional, almost completely stable ping(170-180ms) with 0% packet loss, fast video buffering, basically ticked all my boxes)

(All tests were done on a 2Mbps line)

I'm not that knowledgeable when it come to networking but the 2 outliers are Afrihost and Axxess, they both use the MTN back bone correct? You can kinda see where I'm going with this.

The weird thing is when testing both accounts over the week, I would get normal results upon doing a speed test( well some of the time), but when playing a game, the ping and packet loss would skyrocket until I get disconnected from the game.

This is my first post and probably last, since I'm gravitating away from signing on for another month.
Hope this doesn't continue for much longer and that everyone has all there problems miraculously solved:o.

Have a good day guys and thanks :D

Can I ask that you switch the DNS to manual then test using 196.7.7.7 as the primary DNS, with 8.8.8.8 as the secondary DNS. Once that is done can you test your connection again and see if there is any difference.

Wow, I'm not entirely sure. I've tested Netflix on my Capped account last night with both Unotelly and Hola and it was working perfectly with a 4Mbps line.

Are you maybe running any sort of firewall or DMZ?

I'm definitely disappointed that you've had such a degradation in your performance, and I definitely want to look into this. Would you mind running a few tests with us? It would basically just entail playing those games whilst we monitor your connection to see exactly what is happening.

Did a video call last night, went very badly even though I had perfect throughput and latency (18.5 down, sub 20ms). The video would buffer and then stop as Webex saw low performance on the line. The audio would break up badly every couple of minutes as well. Asked everyone to turn off video, but that didn't improve the audio quality. Switched to VOX mid-call and the problems went away.

I assume this can only be related to packet-loss.

Definitely not the experience that you should be having, especially with a line at that speed.

What time more or less was the video call more or less? I just want to check that there wasn't anything strange happening on our side during that time.

Afrihost, we all now that service experience is negatively influenced by the Network Management system you put in place. We also know you put it in place to (among other things) manage the IPC capacity you have more efficiently. So either you are again running out of IPC or are going to soon. This is some news for you, but you are testing your software on paying customers and still expect them to pay full price. you can actually measure the issues at Afrihost by the fluctuation of complaints on this forum. FEB/MARCH 2014 - IPC, SEPT/OCT 2014 - IPC, MAR 2015 - Network Management glitches. So why do you keep saying there are no issues. You also keep addressing each individual problem separately. EVERYONE is experiencing packet loss, take ownership and sort it out. It isn't just they few members on this forum that's complaining. Streaming has been an issue for years, but still you think it is localised to a few people (even admitting that all the issues are coming out of the South is general enough!) Stop being ignorant!

I don't think we're being ignorant, I don't think we should avoid basic troubleshooting at any point, we need to be able to determine if there is a patten or connection to each issue that we are presented here.

There are no widespread issues, it does appear that at certain points our network management software is still leaking bandwidth which is causing the latency that some users report in the evening, but by large I do think there has been a significant improvement over the past few days.

You are also generalizing by saying ALL users are experiencing packet loss, I have access to all of our client interactions and I can see that reports of latency have dropped off considerably in the last week. I am sure we'll have everyone running smoothly in the next few days.

Not at all. I also find it odd that switching to a 2mb uncapped account has it running smoothly.

Which browsers are you guys using to test netflix?

I've tried it on IE, Chrome and Firefox.

Works fine on all of them with my 2mb uncapped WA account. If i switch over to my capped account with AH, it's a no go. I have a 10MB line running. End of this month i'm linking up all the rooms in the house to access Netflix, and I'm hoping to use my AH account to stream, but if I can't get it working on the AH account i'll have to up the uncapped with WA to run it smoothly.
