Afrihost Capped DSL Feedback

I am in the same "fight with Telkom at the moment. I have discovered that my service is now also affected by ASSIA and the change happened in about October last year.

I am trying to get them to restore me to what I had previously but it is falling of deaf ears.

Stuck with them at the moment -- no point in changing until fibre become available.

Has your DSL line sync been dropped or have you been moved over to Interleaving?

Hi Genie, any luck in logging a fault with Telkom for us? Still facing connectivity drops.

I actually just PM'ed you! I may need to ask our Service Manager to drop the DSL line sync to 18Mbps. If that doesn't help I'll make sure to log a fault.

DSTV Catchup downloads are at a crawl

Quick update on this.

The Multichoice team have engaged Afrihost to isolate the issue. They believe they have been able to isolate it and advised that they've implemented a temporary solution. I've tested a test file download from the server and it flew. Got 72s of buffer fill in 30s. Basically full line speed.

Not sure when the final solution will available and rolled out. The guys from Multichoice promised to keep me in the loop. I'll post updates when I get them. I'm sure the AfriPeeps will also share updates from the AH side.

Traction at last!

That's awesome to hear! :D

Misbehaving NNTP

@AfriPeeps
Guys it doesn't appear as if AH has taken to heart what has been reported with the NNTP servers.
My downloads from last night average 253KB/s.
Why? Well because as I've raised before...
1. The local server news.afrihost.co.za (196.1.1.36) is not performing as it should.
2. Different DNS servers are resolving news.afrihost.com to the local and others the international.
3. The international servers are performing well.

Can someone please escalate this to the NOC team?
It should be trivial to fix and will resolve the frustration that folks here are feeling.

DON'T CHANGE A THING!!!

Seriously flying. This is how it should be all the time!
Here's a trace from CPT for future reference

BTW - still not ideal seeing packet loss at Hop 3.
Would be good if someone at AH could take a look at that. Seeing this on most traffic.

I've just asked our Network Team to check what's going on, I'm not seeing any issues on our side at the moment, so they'll need to go into a bit more depth.

Awesome to see! :)

You could be seeing the low level packet loss being caused because of Hop 2. It shouldn't be affecting your overall performance, but we should definitely keep an eye on it.

Thanks that would be great.
Hard set the IP address to 196.1.1.36 in the newsgrabber and download something. Should see low download speeds and intermittent loss of connection. This doesn't happen on the Intl. server. DNS 169.1.1.2 resolves news.afrihost.com to the international server. 169.1.1.3 resolves it to the local. So depending on which DNS you get, you'll have different experiences.

Can you check what the news server name is resolving to?
Then try using this IP - 81.171.92.222 - and see if there's a difference.

i tried this earlier this evening after seeing your previous post....did not wok for me

We've been asking this all month already.

I was referring specifically to the current status of the network at this moment. We've been sending each Client's DSL username through to our Network Team over the course of the last few days they've been analyzing each person's account and the throughput on the account to find any issues.
