Afrihost Capped DSL Feedback

AfriMan no connection this morning after switching on modem. Tried resetting it twice and entered logon details twice as well just to be sure the modem didn't lose info on reset but still nothing...help please?

The ADSL light is on and shows the modem is synced when logged into router...just no internet connection

Will PM user details

Got your latest PM - glad everything is sorted :)

Are there issues on the AH network again today- Cape Town East? I've spoken to my hosting company and they say there are connectivity issues from me to the datacentre less than 60km away - and I'm using AFriHost as ISP on the connection.

Ive unplugged the router a few times - switched it off etc with no resolve.

I cant even update websites and sending emails which have even small attachments is basically impossible.

This hop seems to be problematic cpt-net1.ip.adsl.co.za and the latency spikes seem to have a repetitive pattern

Remember that your physical distance from the data centre won't really have any influence, it will depend on the closest network breakout points and POPs.

Could you please post the full traceroute? Which data centre are you trying to reach? If we have any hosted servers there, we can also test from our side.

Anyone also experiencing slow speeds to most speedtest servers and extremely high pings after around 8pm every single day in the Eastern Cape? I'm on a gigabit Ethernet connection and am connected via Openserve 100mbps using an unshaped capped data Afrihost account. Surely something is wrong on the network during this time:

Looks like you're also sending these results to our Twitter team, Josh. Where would you prefer to work with us?

This is an ongoing yet intermittent issue - 25% packet loss on each of these hops. Not only is it stuffing up HTTP traffic but also SMTP.

Cape Town area

hop 3 cpt-rx2.ip.adsl.co.za 25% packet loss
hop 4 cpt-net1.ip.adsl.co.za 25% packet loss

hop 5 cloudflare.ixp.capetown has between 3 and 10% packet loss

hop 6 afrihost.com (104.20.31.244) a further 5% packet loss.

So what's the story - link congestion /queuing at these IPs, hardware failing there or cabling issue?

We're definitely not seeing packet loss in general on the network right now. Can you please post the full test so we can give it a look?

I sent a email out to AH support this morning at 9am...its now 4.14pm - no reply from them - and I sent them a full report with attachments.

Going to try another ISP now. Takes more than 3 minutes just to try and send a 400kb email reply to a client. Insane.

Doesn't sound lekker at all :( Send me the ticket ref so I can see the tests.

Capped 100GB account running at 1MB for streaming twitch. When I do a speedtest 10MB. Back to streaming, max transfer on the account is 1MB. Shaping 90% of the speed a on a capped account is bloody ridiculous.

WA account 10MB streaming without any issues. Well played Afrihost, well played.

We don't shape streaming - unless you're using a service we don't know about that uses a P2P signature. Twitch is definitely a service we know about and we don't shape it.

Do you have a link to the stream so we can test?

If I got a ticket REF back I would inbox you - I'm still waiting for a reply, now almost 24 hours later.

Pure joy? = No joy...

Reply from my datacentre support guys.

Our server logs are still indicating the below error:

-------------------------------------------------------
2018-06-14 16:04:09 SMTP connection from 169-0-73-116.ip.afrihost.co.za lost while reading message data
-------------------------------------------------------
169.0.73.0 -169.0.73.255 are all Afrihost IPs, so routing via your network is dropping out connections regularly - the ping is fine, so its not the Telkom line, the packet loss is huge.

Can you forward the mail you sent to me on [email protected]?

Forwarded to you using Afrihost connection, via email. If Afrihost never got my original email - then AH is blocking my domain traffic and preventing me from sending out domain based emails via SMTP...but the problem also shows up while logged into one of my websites while doing updates - giving HTTP errors, timeouts.

I got your mail, we're definitely not blocking your domain, and I don't think we have those kind of restrictions on our SMTP (as far as I am aware).

I'll forward to one of our guys to look at.

If your firewall is blocking access to domains hosted at Great Westerford in Newlands - it will obviously be a problem. I host there and with Afrihost as well. But my problem lies with getting from here, via Afrihost network to Great Westerford datacentre...

The problem isn't this side (Ive tested all the hardware) and its not with the datacentre either, they tested their end also...the line syncs, the noise values are fine - but package loss is happening along your routing. So much so that the data never reaches my hosting server.

Therefore, if I use my own domain email to send emails to you - it never gets there, because it doesnt get to the datacentre's server in time via Afrihost routing - but if I use Afrihost email from here to you it works...

OK just ran another test...the packet loss is far less today than yesterday on cpt-rx2.ip.adsl.co.za and cpt-net1.ip.adsl.co.za... but what is making the difference today?

Its hovering between 3-7% today on those 2 hops, instead of yesterday's 25% per hop.

Hop Sent PL% Min Max Avg Host Name / [IP]

3 62 5 26.60 121.15 40.57 cpt-rx2.ip.adsl.co.za [169.1.5.82]
4 61 3 26.48 115.89 37.38 cpt-net1.ip.adsl.co.za [169.1.5.128]

They're both your servers.

cloudflare.ixp.capetown drops between 5-10% (packet loss) at the moment
