Afrihost Capped DSL Feedback

OK just ran another test...the packet loss is far less today than yesterday on cpt-rx2.ip.adsl.co.za and cpt-net1.ip.adsl.co.za... but what is making the difference today?

Its hovering between 3-7% today on those 2 hops, instead of yesterday's 25% per hop.

Hop Sent PL% Min Max Avg Host Name / [IP]

3 62 5 26.60 121.15 40.57 cpt-rx2.ip.adsl.co.za [169.1.5.82]
4 61 3 26.48 115.89 37.38 cpt-net1.ip.adsl.co.za [169.1.5.128]

They're both your servers.

cloudflare.ixp.capetown drops between 5-10% (packet loss) at the moment

Hmmmm.... that is odd. I will need to ask the Team about that. Thanks for pointing it out.

10:30 hits and kablam! Suddenly full speed on streaming and torrents. No way in hell this is coincidence several evenings in a row. You are throttling chosen ports to death during peak hours.

Packet loss on last hop 22% - all afrihost infrastructure

Acceptable packet loss is around 2% after that many protocols starts going pearshaped over the net. This is unacceptable.

Typical causes of packet loss on the last hop:

errors in data transmission
network congestion - not enough bandwidth to manage the demand on that IP
router/switch/firewall is not able to keep up with the traffic
software bugs at IP
faulty hardware

Seems international gaming latency gone to the dogs awell

Back to the same old latency issues that we had awhile back. All international gaming is unbearable.

speeds are totally down the crapper again or are we shaping again?

Yes, yes they are. 8 oclocks hits and I'm back to 1MB max. When I run a speedtest it starts at sub 1MB and then suddenly shoots up to 10MB. At least I can get my line speed on the speed test, which is great. Other ports, have fun...

My ping is excellent, but the packet loss remains on AH routing - and that is what kicks me off my own hosting servers, it also messes with webmail, smtp mail and FTP.

I also tried some gaming over the weekend from this connection - well I got kicked from steam often because of connection timeouts.

I would guess this is AH network congestion related.

At the moment the average packet loss is between 5 and 2.7% but it varies - and goes up to 40% at times on some of a AH server hops.

Are you on shaped or unshaped Capped? If you are on shaped capped, then your results would make sense since shaped products prioritise real time services.

It definitely doesn't look good. The results suggest demand in Cape Town could be high at that point, but we'd need to ask our NOC team to look at this and also compare with what they're seeing. I know we've been upgrading regularly in terms of capacity (possibly 3-4 times a year of late) so I wouldn't expect to see that level of latency due to demand.

Can you PM me so I can ask our NOC team to take a look?

My biggest problem is the packet loss - one reason for that is network congestion or faulty hardware along the hops. It makes it extremely hard to work here, having such dodge internet connectivity.

I've registered a fault with Telkom to check their side, the data centre has already run checks on their end and I ran hardware checks on this end. No issues here. It took me 2 days just to download the updates for Windows 10 on a new device. If Telkom also find nothing wrong on their side I suppose their invoice is going to be for Afrihost's account.

Remember that the Telkom DSL line syncs fine (on spec), and the ping is fine.

Yesterday we could not even print PDFs at the office using webmail to view it, as the connections would drop out with the data centre due to the packet loss.

You and AfriNic have my details - the original issue I emailed you about hasn't been resolved yet. And I never got a support TICKET ref from Afrihost either. Its now been days.

I even logged another support request on ClientZone yesterday....no reply to date.

Telkom technical says this morning - they checked the line - and the line drops are caused by YOU the ISP, Afrihost.

It takes a 332kb email 18 minutes to go from my desk, to Newlands (+-50km from here) back to myself. And this is on Afrihost DSL. :wtf:

Quicker to drive

almost... but if I send myself an email directly from the data centre server's webmail function on my domain - it gets from there to here in my office in 1 second.

Afrihost.co.za email 250kb sent from myself to myself at "myself"@afrihost.co.za using POP3 mail takes 1 minute to get back here, the same email was info'd to my domain email address .....still waiting for its delivery from Afrihost to my domain inbox, 7 minutes still nothing.
