Hi

I have a rather weird issue. My office uses Mweb (historical reasons, would take a lot to shift them off it), and my personal account is with afrihost. The office runs various servers (including exchange) on their ADSL link (bad idea, I know, but again legacy reasons). I can access the office server from MTN, Telkom Mobile, and vodacom, but not afrihost.

Predictably the two blame each other  . From the traceroutes below, I am inclined to blame Mweb, but it's hard to be sure what exactly is going on.

I have been testing using telnet to the work server on a port that is definitely open. It is not a DNS issue; I can retrieve the IP address and use that manually.

From Afrihost:
Code:
Tracing route to *** [197.89.***.***]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 1 ms <1 ms 3 ms 192.168.1.1
  2 * * * Request timed out.

Anyone got any ideas how I can resolve this annoyance?

Thanks

Is the second traceroute from a Telkom Mobile sim or Telkom ADSL data account? You might need to manually forward the port in your router. Telkom Mobile has unrestricted ports by default, but your adsl router might be blocking it depending on the protocol used by the server (though that's unlikely if the last hop is where the issue happens)

My telkom SIM is in a USB modem attached to my router as a failover connection. Afrihost allows me out on all the relevant ports to http://portquiz.net/. It is quite unusual anyway for a router to block outgoing connections. The issue is definitely between mweb and afrihost somewhere.

Hi mastercylinder

I would like to look into this for you, can you provide an account number or the ADSL line number for the office connection, in order for me to do so.

Thanks

Hi.

I sent you our account number. Last time around I think you guys reset our ADSL, but it did not help.

Thanks

Hi

We had a look at the product and there are definitely no blocks in place. We will investigate further to see if we can find anything else and will keep you posted.
