Github.com clones ultra slow with Afrihost fibre (5Kbs)

Firstly, you can see, my connection is fine, 48Mbs down, 47Mbs up. The connection has overall been very good and very fast. This is a speed test running while peforming a git clone:


And heres the very slow clone:


Part of the reason I left Telkom is cause they had routing issues like this all the time.

For a few weeks git longs have been usuabile slow. Waiting an hour so far to clone a 25MB repo, at a depth of 3, that is abou 12MB. Very similar to this issue: https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/threads/afrihost-github-speed-un-usable.1144909/

In the following traceroute, you can see the forbidden name "Telkom" ((shudder)) appear:

Edit: I feel you pain. Mine though is having to clone from git over company VPN rate limited to 100k sucks when you try and be productive.

Mine fly and I just saw on the analytics dashboard that from one site that I look after they downloaded 498GB from github today.

I’ve also been having periodic issues with GitHub clones over the last two weeks or so. Difficult to replicate because some repos seem to be cached in different places.

E.g. I occasionally build a dev container that clones from a few GitHub repos. One will download in an instant and the next will take 10 minutes. Both only being a couple hundred kb.

If I use CloudFlare Warp it usually makes it fine again so probably a routing issue.
