Afrihost fixed mobile LTE launched

Wish the price of 4g/lte routers & dongles would come down. They always seem a bit too expensive.

Bought that router last month from Telkom shop for R1500. One shop said they're not allowed to sell it cash, another had absolutely no problem.

8GB on LTE? That's a joke with Cell C giving more than double that for less than half the price on 3G.

With any of our packages you are still able to activate Afrihost Plus+ and get your Data Cap Doubled each month. Not to mention some of the other great Plus+ benefits such as 2-for-1 Topups; 500MB free data and a Premium Simfy account.

What is this Obsession for capped data.

If a WISP (Which is Fixed Wireless Point to Point) can offer an uncapped solution why can't AfriHost or the other LTE Providers do the same

At the end of the day it is basically "Fixed Wireless Point to Point"

Tell me Afrihost, what am I missing here, or do not understand.

The biggest hindrance towards Uncapped Mobile Data is the cost of the data itself, MTN experimented with an Uncapped package, but the shaping on the account itself meant that it was significantly more feasible to simply opt for a fixed Capped package.

The service is aimed at customers who cannot get Telkom’s DSL service, but are looking for the functionality and stability of a traditional DSL router.

Rubbish, if one uses fixed line or these days even a decent WISP they probably intend on using more than 8GB of data, and at the price of that 8GB it makes more sense to use a WISP or even Neotel (who seem to be having no issues with their uncapped LTE)

2Mbps DSL Line R159
2Mbps Home Uncapped Account R297
POTS Rental R166.50

Total = R622.50

And with Neotel Uncapped (Which is unshaped, and only throttled after a very generous threshold)

C'mon Afrihost, I've already had to cancel one business account due to Telkom, and I'm very close to canceling another account and line after what I saw after visiting your Rivionia branch yesterday!

Time to go back to the drawing board I think....

Size of GTA 5 on Steam: 65 GB

I'm a current Afrihost Mobile user and unfortunately unless you are going to use it for just browsing it just can't replace an uncapped connection. Data has become huge.

The biggest issue with NeoTel and many other WISPs is the coverage and availability areas, which are still very limited compared to the ADSL and 3G / LTE footprint.

Would you mind sending me a PM with your experience at our Walk-in Center yesterday, it sounds like something didn't quite go right, and is definitely something I want to look into.

to simply opt for a fixed Capped package.

Okay, My question has not been answered adequately here.
Let me approach it from another angle.

What is the Cost Difference between

Data from a Fixed Tower to a Fixed Customer Point using WISP Technology

And

Data from a Fixed Tower to a Fixed Customer Point using LTE Technology

We are not talking Mobile Data here which roams between towers and its associated handover/handoff, this should not come into the equation. For me the issue could be one of the following.

  • Lets treat "Fixed" LTE as mobile data and charge it as such.
  • Why rock the boat when you can charge high prices because the market is "used to it"
  • There is a ICASA or other legal impediment.
  • There is a major tower equipment cost difference compared to WISPS.
  • More spectrum Rand Cost (licenses) is needed to carry the same amount of data when Compared to Wisp License Costs.
  • There is no major cost difference between WISP tech and LTE tech between Fixed Tower and Fixed Customer, but if we do not sell as Capped, LTE Providers will go out of business. In other words, your prices are artifically inflated to keep you in business.

Afrihost, if not one of the above, as per original question, what have i missed.

The biggest difference is the maturation and availability of the two technologies in South Africa. So whilst there isn't any difference in cost, the two systems are not inter-operable, so it is not feasible for current larger operators of GSM / LTE Technologies such as Vodacom, MTN and Cell-C to replace their networks entirely or run WISP in-parallel with their existing networks.

With regards to our prices, we push as hard as possible to keep our Mobile Data pricing as low as possible, and we are very close to the limit in terms of the minimum we can charge for Mobile Data.

Well when I'm getting over 16GB for less than R150 those are like the peanuts you get at the upscale bar. I know Afrihost is a reseller with limited impact but that to me is not a valid excuse for accepting a second rate offering on a technology that could easily carry 10 times what we currently use on 3G/HSPA. As Segg and Solitude pointed out it's time to go back to the drawing board. Data is no longer a luxury but a necessity and it's quite reasonable for an average user on the bottom end of the income ladder to need 100GB+ a month. Cell C, Telkom and Neotel are the only ones that have made some headway towards that. Vodacon keeps complaining about a lack of spectrum but to date their airwaves have remains largely empty due to their pricing so I don't buy their arguments. Imho MTN had something going there with uncapped but killed it with their throttling to artificially maintain the status quo.

I think it's time the industry reassesses and renegotiates it's relationships. ;)

With respect I think that's dodging the issue. If there's not much cost difference then something is amiss that Wisps can offer uncapped but the mobile operators can't. He wasn't suggesting that Mobile operators should start replacing technology and become Wisps.
