3G isn't LTE and the e3551 isn't an LTE capable device. So the LTE SIM needs to be in a LTE device to use LTE

So November is the last month before th 10GB mobile data is "Reviewed". Any hints as to what's gonna happen? I foresee a lot of 10GB users downgrading to the 5GB package before the end of the month.

I'm wondering if I shouldn't just ride it out for another month to see what Afrihost comes up with. I'm doubtful Afrihost would reduce that package to 3GB for R197 while there are 5GB still users only paying R145.

The worst that can happen is for one month I end up paying R197 for 3GB's.... but I'm sure that won't happen. ;)

Hi Chingha, are you sure about this? I wanted to make sure I got an LTE device and the e3551 modem states max download speeds of 21Mbps - surely that can't be 3G.. Is there a middle ground that is faster than 3G but slower than LTE...?

Chingha is 100% correct about this. The e3551 does not support LTE at all. The 21mbps is HSPA+ (HSDPA/HSUPA a form of 3G from what I understand) and these days you can get HSPA running at 42.2mbps with expansion all the way to 337+. Some prefer to call this middle ground 3.5G.

AfriGuy can you help?

My Afrihost sim, which has 'LTE' printed on it, arrived about 2 weeks ago. I then also purchased a new Huawei e3551, which I believe is identical to the 'MiFi' device Afrihost offer.

I have set the device for '3G only' but I was hoping that I would get LTE speeds as I live right in town and bang in LTE coverage according to the signal map. The device is always on orange and the download speeds are never better than 2-3Mbps..

What can I do?

Thanks

Have you provisioned LTE on the SIM?

Also, the E5331 (which I assume is the one you're referring to here) is not LTE-capable. So you need an LTE capable (and provisioned) SIM and LTE capable device to use the service.

2-3Mbps would be considered pretty fair for 3G service in most areas though :)

21Mbps is still on 3G (which can even go up to 42.2Mbps on some 3G technologies - but the e5331 does not support higher thab 21Mbps to my knowledge) :(

Yeah I did. Was hoping it would be quick like some of the other guys. Oh well, will just wait.

We can't really pinpoint a time :( I've seen 10 mins and I've seen up to 72 hours - I'm sure it'll be provisioned soon though!

Getting awesome speeds on my afrihost mifi ( I am 100 meters away from the tower).
downloaded at 1900KB/s this morning using multi-threaded http downloads.

The only thing that sucks, downloads from the Google Play store, 10mb app takes more than 10 minutes to download on the mifi, but it maxes out on our adsl lines. this has been ongoing for a month now.

Google probably has separate servers serving content and files for mobile and DSL. Might just be a slow server on the mobile side :(
