Afrihost Mobile Feedback Thread

As long as I've been with Afrihost the last few hours of the month have been snafu. So I don't bargain on finishing my cap on the last day anymore.

I definitely agree that an outage just before month end is probably the worst possible timing. But we're working hard to resolve that. We definitely want our clients to use their data at their convenience, not ours :(

My Afrihost Mobile connection has been absolutely horrible the past couple of days ... Right next to an MTN tower in Bloemfontein.

I would think just under 3Mbps is decent for 3G.

I received my Zest yesterday, and am a little concerned that it only seems able to connect using Edge when my iPad mini (with an MTN SIM) connects using 3G. Side by side speed tests give the following:-

Ping: iPad - 49ms; Zest - 345ms
Down: iPad - 0.7Mbps; Zest - 0.03Mbps
Up: iPad - 1.60Mbps; Zest - 0.02Mbps

Yeah, even the 3G sucks speed wise...

You can set the phone to get 3G signal only, that may change the performance. Give it a try and let me know.

something wrong with Afrihost mobile in Cape Town CBD???

I got MB available but I just get kicked to an afrihost capped url...

:wtf:

There shouldn't be any issues. PM me your details and I'll see what's causing this.

Thanks for the reply.

Then I get no signal at all. The iPad with the MTN SIM has 4/5 signal on 3G side by side.

It's a strange one indeed. Could be that the signal is not strong enough and the phone gets a stronger EDGE signal :(

Have you chatted with Zest (via their Facebook page) to get some insight from them?

I haven't chatted with Zest, and I don't usually use Facebook for commercial purposes. It's not a signal issue - the iPad manages to pick up a 4/5 3G signal on MTN in the same spot, and a colleague also has a Zest, and hers connects on 3G without any issue.

Every evening at my chick's place for the last 3 days (Blackheath near Cresta) the MTN signal dies -- goes from 3G to Edge if you're lucky. Phone and MiFi. Is there an issue in that area? Tower falling over maybe?

AfriMan, please could you look into my account situation? I'm getting the "you are capped" message / portal when I definitely am not.

My 1+1 mobile account has been offline since yesterday :(

Update: Sorted. Called phone support and they re-provisioned my sim.

Definitely worth contacting them, they might have more insight into this. Remember that the Zest is 3G only, so it can't benefit from LTE coverage. It would seems a bit odd to have LTE coverage and not 3G, but that could be the case.

If you not on the Book of Face, you can email [email protected] :)

That I couldn't say. It could be demand for 3G signal that makes 2G seem like the "better" signal for the device. It may also be related to coverage issues. Have you tried running 3G only on the device?

Thanks for the update. Glad it's all sorted :)

When I do that, I get No Coverage. What gets me is that a week ago, the coverage was excellent - it is almost as if 3G has been switch off on that tower. And I can't entertain the idea of demand as the signal remains EDGE through the night - like 4 in the morning still edge. Can MTN be asked to look into the tower? I had great use for the 3G but the edge cannot even download email without timing out.
