Afrihost Mobile Feedback

I have a new problem. This time with my regular Afrihost SIM card that runs in my cellphone. Why is the network blocking my data connection if it detects that I'm broadcasting a Wi-Fi hotspot with my phone?

If I toggle my sim slots or toggle mobile data whilst the hotspot is active, I get an exclamation mark and zero data throughput. This can also just happen after a period of time when using the hotspot. I have to ensure the hotspot is disabled when connecting to MTN and then enable a hotspot.

Are you using Android?

remember there is a setting in the APN settings that needs to be added for mobile hotspot to use the Afrihost APN. If you do not add it the mobile hotspot will use the MTN apn and that will trigger the out of bundle page for the MTN if you don't have data loaded from MTN.

Yeah, I'm using a OnePlus 6 with Android 10. My APN for Afrihost looks exactly as described above.

The default, supl is added in the APN type field?

If so try removing the MTN apn that has that also included.

Yes, exactly as above. Once upon a time I manually added the APN based on the info on your site. I did have inactive old MTN access points though, which I just deleted.

It's odd because we don't block anything. You are free to use your Airmobile data as you wish. Phone, Hotspot, Router, Iot it's up to you we don't block anything.

Well, something ain't right. I've been on MTN for years at this property and had rock solid signal and speeds over 20Mbps at a minimum. Now with Afrihost I get
Fingers crossed that deleting those inactive access points does the trick, but I'd be surprised tbh. I suppose it's also possible that MTN went to hell over here around the time I switched to Afrihost.

Let me know if it still happens so we can figure it out.

It's still every bit as broken. I desperately need to keep working during the load shedding now, and my Afrihost data on my phone is basically unusable. There are brief intermittent spurts, literally a few seconds per minute, where I have some throughput and a frozen page will finally half load.

Right now I'm running alright on my Rain sim, despite it having ±25% signal, and paying R50/GB when I have several gigs on my Afrihost sim and full signal on MTN. Starting to think I need to bail and get a Vodacom contract rather. What exactly are my options in trying to get this to work? I've given up restarting my device and toggling data constantly. That's not a sustainable solution and only helps briefly anyway.

Can you dm me the number in question so I can have a look for you?

Wife and I also having intermittent connections on Afrihost mobile data since Tuesday... switch to MTN data and it works just fine

Do you have examples for me?

I'm trying to see if it's just an MTN issue, loadshedding related or something on our side that needs attention.

I decided to work from my phone hotspot on Afrihost APN the whole day to see if I can pick up issues and even during loadshedding it was fine.

Could very well be loadshedding as it started on Tuesday... No examples but fine one moment and no connection the next although mobile data indicates connection on phone...

Came here to say the same, exactly the same issue here and I'm moving around so not cell or loadshedding related.
I had the same problem last Thursday the 27th and eventually the issue was rasied to a "Technical Consultant" IIRC. They solved it. Mtshali mentioned that is was an IP conflict issue but couldn't explain it further.
Now it is back. I contacted Bongani who promised me an SMS with a ticket number proving escalation last night. Nothing recieved.
How am I expected to work like this? I'm currently on the road seeing multiple clients and so loosing business because I'm not getting messages and mails. If they do squeak through then I cannot respond. BAD.
Bad experience and bad customer service.

Looks like the back room fairies have done their thing and it seems back to normal.

Just frustrating that this is the second time there has been a problem and that in both cases it has taken over a day to solve it.

Wonder what is going on?

MTN has been moving a few things around taking JHB traffic to CPT first and taking CPT traffic to JHB first.

We have corrected a few issues we noticed on our side and have logged it with MTN to assist with some of the challenges.

In another city and the same problem has just re occurred. Can't even do a speed test while, literally sitting under the tower, full bars showing.

How does 3G only and the MyMTN APN compare to Afrihost?
