Afrihost Mobile Feedback

So I've got one of those Huawei routers that I use when traveling with Afrihost data.

Currently in a small holiday town where signal is somewhat choppy. Getting okay speed but I'm looking to get some external antennas as the router has got two ports for them. Any recommendations?

The few on Takealot is a mixed bag of reviews

Check out Poyinting Mimo antennas if your device supports it.

@AfriNatic Is there any reason why Afrihost apn is routing via Joburg?

I'm in the Garden Route, yet ping to CPT is ~70ms vs Joburg ~50ms, speeds do be good though.

For me its routing correctly via CPT, from PE, but I suspect I am part of the 50% that was migrated to MTN in Rondebosch because I have a 197.79.xxx.xxx IP.

Are you using a Mikrotik LTE router? If so, which one?

And also, this morning, routing has shifted back to CPT route.

First hop is high, because of wifi through a thick concrete floor, but my route sure is a bit longer than yours

Morning

Our APN was initially only on 3 EPG's but recently to increase capacity another EPG was configured in CPT. The 4 EPG where Afrihost clients terminate on are Randburg, Germiston, Tygerberg and Cape Town.

Allocating subscribers are on a round robin based with some influence based on location and load at the time session starts so you might have situations where someone in CPT ends up in Randburg and someone in Pretoria ends up in CPT.

You can just reboot or restart the ppp session to see if you will fall back on an EPG close to you.

Ah thank you so much for the explanation.

Yep, I am using this: https://scoop.co.za/mikrotik-ltap-mini-lte-router-dual-sim-and-gps-rb912r-2nd-ltm-r11e-lte.html

It's not very powerful or fast, but I use this because it is dual sim, and can be powered via USB, which makes it perfect for me to use in a car when doing long distance travelling, for things like youtube music, etc.

I use an MTN (Afrihost APN) and Telkom SIM in it, Telkom has a prepaid option where you can get uncapped offpeak for R250 for 30 days, which works well inside of most cities, but when going between towns MTN will have much better coverage.

I programmed it so that when I press the MODE button, it switches between the sims, so I dont have to login to switch sims, and I can plug the ethernet in at home to use as an additional failover connection for my home network.

Ah yes I have same one, but never really looked into how good it's with signal.

Will have to relook at it

Does Airmobile support VoLTE?
If it does, how do I activate it?

It doesn’t seem to be working an iPhone with Airmobile. When making calls, it takes time to initiate, while it drops to 3G. This also means no data is available during a call, which is a bit inconvenient.

No VoLTE on AirMobile unfortunately

Not yet, I see Melon Mobile started supporting VoLTE and Wifi-calling end of last week for both Android and iOS and they are also an MTN MVNO. This means that either MTN is now allowing wholesale VoLTE services or it is in an advanced stage of testing. It should then be close on AirMobile
