Afrihost + MTN perhaps LTE?

Hi AfriMan

Can you confirm if the LTE-capable sims are now available?

I yesterday asked Tech Support to enable LTE on my sim, and I received the following reply:
"I have had a look at the sim card for you and LTE is already active, all you would need to do is be in a LTE area and the sim card and device would automatically connect to the LTE network."

This response doesn't add up in the light of your previous comments.

If memory serves, the network and SIM's provided are already LTE capable, the initial devices (E5331) are however not LTE architecture ready.
The newer devices, which I am sure they will reveal soon - are LTE capable

NO LTE sims have been issued.

If you have an AFRIHOST sim then it is NOT LTE ready. You will need to contact Afrihost and request an LTE sim to be sent to you.

Hint: sign up to the R19pm protection plan first in order to avoid the R200 new sim+courier fee....

All of our Nano SIMs are LTE compatible. These SIMs will obviously only work with LTE compatible devices. More LTE enabled SIMs are on the way :)

Also just to confirm, if you don't have a Protection Plan the replacement value for the SIM is R197, which includes delivery. The R19/ month for the plan is well worth it!

Just to confirm, the sim that I received yesterday with the Mifi would be an LTE-enabled nano Sim? And if I put it into my LTE E3276 it should connect via LTE? I read somewhere that MTN's LTE requires some kind of VAS to activate it (not to be confused with Vaseline, which you also need to handle their pricing).

Are you saying you've received a Nano SIM already from us? I don't think we've shipped any, though we have got orders from Wednesday and yesterday. If you have an Afrihost Nano SIM, it is LTE ready - 100%

No, I don't even know what that looks like (what's the difference between them anyway?). All I'm saying is that the guy at Support told me my sim is LTE enabled. However, I'm not picking up LTE.

So my question is: If I don't have a nano sim (and I'm therefore not already LTE enabled) then how/when do I get one?

Can't the existing standard sims be provisioned for LTE, like Vodacom do, for example.

Edit: Okay, I just checked up on the nano sim difference. I can see that it's going to be a problem fitting it into a standard sim sized modem or mifi, unless it comes with some kind of carrier to increase its size?

Okay, please don't use an incorrect sized sim in your device as that may damage your device as well as the SIM.

You need to order the appropriate SIM for your device. If you're device is LTE enabled, chances are it will use a nano sim (like an iPhone 5), but you need to check exactly which one is required before ordering. Standard SIMs are breakable to Micro Size, so that at least covers you for those.

If I understand you correctly, you have a SIM in your MiFi. That means that a) you have a standard breakable to micro size SIM which is not LTE enabled b) the MiFi device is also not LTE enabled. So before you order a new SIM, find out what your LTE enabled device needs in terms of SIM size. If it's a nano, then you short be able to order a replacement SIM soon. If it's standard or micro, then you'll need to wait until we can supply the LTE enabled SIMS in that size.

The standard one, for an E3276 modem. Any indications when that will be available?

You get converters that you put the nano sim in and converts it to a normal size one that you can use in the E3276. 2 ways to get one, buy one from dealextreme or your local cellphone repair shop. Or go to your normal cellphone repair shop/friend that has a nano sim cutter and ask them to cut a standard sim to nano. Use the cut out frame left behind.

Excellent advice! Thanks!

@ Afriman - is it possible to change my new Mobile 3 order to get a nano sim, instead of the standard one that I ordered?

Once the order has been packed and scanned, it's batched up for delivery with the courier and we pretty much can't touch it as breaks the system. We do know about the LTE issue though and we're thinking up solutions. At present we're thinking that if you don't have an LTE SIM you'll need to order a replacement for R197 (including delivery)

Keep thinking then!:) I'm sure you guys will come up with an even better idea!

So the steps to get a nano sim..

1. Receive your current SIM on pre-order and sign and Rica and all that..
2. Go to computer
3. Log onto afrihost clientzone
4. Request updated sim
5. Pay over your R195
6. Wait a few weeks
7. Get your LTE nano sim
8. Put into a Standard sim converter
9. Install into LTE device
10. Be disappointed as the LTE is Marginally faster than the 3g you had.

We definitely hope that it won've be the case. Our tests here at AfriHQ are showing speeds of over 30Mbps, so we're confident that those wanting much higher speeds than 3G will find the R197 worth the expense - provided they have LTE coverage where they plan to use the service.

Also, by that stage, deliveries should be in days (not weeks) depending on payment method. We'd like to get to the stage where verified paid for products are delivered within 24-48 hours nationally :)

Turns out the quickest fix is to just cancel and re-order, because the order hasn't been packed yet.

Yeah, if the order hasn't been packed, we can process cancellation pretty quick - cos a SIM would not have been assigned as yet.

Anyone got a list of LTE towers in the Cape Town area perhaps.
Just wanted to see if it would be worth upgrading.
My speeds at home are terrible, only getting 2.2MB/s
