Afrihost New Network Feedback

@AfriGenie, I am able to stream 480p without buffering with my 2MB standard uncapped account. Does that therefore mean that I will be able to stream 720p and 1080p without buffering with a 4MB and 8MB account respectively? Does it scale like that?

If anyone has managed to do the above with their Afrihost accounts, it'd be great to know.

In my experience, you need at least a 6Mbps connection to streaming 720p without any buffering, and 10Mbps for full 1080p without buffering. :)

I'm getting 800ms hops all over the place,i was away for the last 3 days when u changed to the new network. I've never had problems since i joined a year ago,and now i can barely open a myBB thread. Is there a problem in the cape?? I'm streaming the boks game tomorrow,i cant deal with this when the game starts eish.

We'll definitely need to look into this! Could you perhaps post a traceroute to Afrihost.com and ping bras.afrihost.com.

Does that apply to all different streaming sources, eg. YouTube, Netflix, etc?

Yup! It is pretty consistent across the various streaming platforms. You may be able to squeeze better resolutions out of local streaming services such as Showmax or Frontrow and locally cached or CDN services like Youtube.

Ive managed to stream 1080p content on youtube with a 2meg, all i had to do was wait ~10 seconds to let it buffer then it wouldnt buffer after that.

I've managed to stream 720p youtube videos without buffering on my 4Mbps uncapped line. It was only movie trailers, so not for extended periods.

wait 10 seconds? i had to wait 5 mins on a 2MB line to watch a 480p movie :D

Thats strange, when i used to have a 4Mbps connection i could stream 720p no problem.
