Thank you. Bookmarked. Still however shows only 4 mbps max in my area.
Can anyone tell me if I would be able to get 10 mbps on my line?
And if I can, would I need a vdsl router?
![]()
Ok cool thank you. AH rep at contact centre said I would need a vdsl router to maintain a stable connection. I really hope I can get 10 mbps. Spoke to a Telkom Tech this morning (dealing with an issue on my line) and he said I can as they installed a new card yesterday and I am less than 1 km from the dslam. So now the investigation starts. Don't want to waste money so first want to do my homework properly.
10Mbps is still ADSL, 20Mbps is either ADSL or VDSL. If you're on 20Mbps it is nicer to be on VDSL, less overheads and 2Mbps upload instead of 1Mbps.
You're on ADSL_G.dmt modulation according to the router, the max you can get is 8Mbps. With that SNR you should be able to get 8Mbps, 10Mbps should be easily within reach if they upgrade the modulation to ADSL2+.
Thanks for the info. May I ask a few questions:
1. Who do I contact to find for sure whar I can get? I have emailed Charl so I am hoping he will have an answer......
2. How does one get Telkom to upgrade the modulation to ADSL2+?
1. Thanks. AH call centre says the same thing as the coverage map that Iceman gave me - 4 mbps max but the tech says otherwise.1. Not sure, where are you located? MickeyD has a lot of contacts at Telkom if you want to try him out, else you have to go through Afrihost support.
2. Depends on the exchange, could be that they just have to move you to a different port. Request it via the Afrihost support.
(assuming your line is with Afrihost)
Dont go with what the coverage map says though. My location only showed a max of 2mbps. When i asked Charl, he said i could get a max of 20mbps. Charl indicated at the time, that they hadnt updated the coverage map to indicate what i can truely get.1. Thanks. AH call centre says the same thing as the coverage map that Iceman gave me - 4 mbps max but the tech says otherwise.
2. I will hopefully get to speak to one of the AH reps here on MyBB - I think they will be able to assist better than the call centre guys. My line is with AH.
Thanks for the assistance.
Thank you. I definitely will do. I need more power...... lol.Dont go with what the coverage map says though. My location only showed a max of 2mbps. When i asked Charl, he said i could get a max of 20mbps.
If your stats indicate that you could possibly get higher, then do some more digging and checking etc.
I might drop down to 10mbps, not because i want to, but because my speeds have been erratic. There is some issue at the exchange, some links that need to be replaced or upgraded. Telkom is not really the greatest at fixing things quickly thoughThank you. I definitely will do. I need more power...... lol.![]()
Thanks.
Not great results here - what DNS servers are you using?
Did international sites work better for you last night compared to previous evenings?
What an awful experience trying to migrate an ADSL line to Afrihost. I've subsequently cancelled my ADSL line and data bundle with Afrihost, the service is frankly is so rank I'm surprised you guys are still in business. According to the support person I spoke to the nigration should have been done by Wednesday at the very latest. Why is nobody communicating with me or letting me know what is causing the delay.
It just make me all the more peeved off as nobody at Afrihost informed me that I would stuck with a half broken 2mpbs ADSL line while waiting for the migration to take place from Telkom to Afrihost which has now been ongoing for close to 3 weeks, it really sucks. I never want to do business with your company ever again.
My experience is the total opposit, I suggest you maybe reconsider dealing with Afrihost, give them a chance to investigate and explain.
End of last month my 30 day notice period with MWeb came to a end, my ADSL line was with them. Since I had a Afrihost capped account for a few months now, my plan was to move my line back to Telkom and then to use Afrihost as my primary ISP.
I called Telkom on the 3rd to ask them to migrate my line back to them, no prob sir it could take up to 7 days, ok so 7 days without ADSL. I felt uneasy and called Telkom again on the 4th, no sir no order was placed for your line, in fact MWeb haven't even released your line yet so we can't do anything. Call MWeb, oh sorry sir there's a delay on our side but we will release your line ASAP.
So during this week, the back and forth between Telkom and MWeb I decided screw Telkom, I can't put up with this level of service, so I'm also taking my line to Afrihost.
Friday morning MWeb sends me a SMS that my line is finally back in the holding pool and I apply for a ADSL line on the Afrihost website. There after Telkom informs me that the line was back in their holding pool at 9:48 and that Afrihost took ownership of the line at 10:11, that's like 15 minuts after I did the order on the Afrihost website.
In the end from completing the order on the Afrihost website to me having fully working ADSL again, took 2 - 3 hours which is pretty impressive considering Telkom told me if I do it with them it can take up to 7 days.
Sorry, Afrihost messed up on this one. Its not wise making promises you cannot keep and for that I think they deserve the boot. I got the notification from Telkom that my line was released on Monday. I contacted Afrihost after the notification to commence the migration, which their support technician confirmed, and stated that the line would be migrated by Wednesday at the latest. No feedback from Afrihost since then, no line migration and I've been stuck on an unreliable 2mbps connection. My wife depends on our internet connection at home for her work and the subpar service has caused me lots of crap. If I had been aware of the disruption involved in the migration process I'd gladly pay the R30 premium to Telkom every month. My main motivation for the migration has been the R50 ADSL + data bundle saving offered by Afrihost. So far I'm fortunate that my decision has not caused us a loss of income. It terribly disappointing to put your trust in a company and have them drop you like that.
What was your line speed before your attempted move to Afrihost, by the sounds of it 2 MB? Did you also then apply for a 2 MB line on the Afrihost side or a faster one? If faster, then it can take longer I think up to 10 days and this is out of Afrihosts hands. What I did was to apply for the same line speed which I previously had, just to get the internet back up and running ASAP, then after it was working again I changed my line speed to 10 MB which took a further 6 days, but at least I had internet.
Not sure if I am still the only one, but ............
packet loss on hops 3 and 8 is still pretty much annoying and creates severe lag issues in game.
