Afrihost or Axxess?

Hi there!

I am very interested in an F-LTE Uncapped package and have narrowed my results down to Afrihost or Axxess. I am currently on an R850 p/m package with Herotel that is 8mbps Uncapped and want something faster. I was first interested in Supersonic, but that was short-lived as a support person said after the 1TB threshold is reached, I have to "TopUp" to continue using? That was a big no-no for me, especially seeing all the poor performance posts in here.

So here are my questions.

Which company answers customers the fastest? Which has the best FUP, even better if there is none? Which has the most consistent speeds for gaming/streaming? Which is the cheapest overall? Do any have a Free to use router? Can I get an external antenna for better speeds? There are probably more things I could ask, but my mind at a blank for now. Hope I can come to a decision soon :)

Thanks for helping!

Also if possible, can I have some good external antenna recommendations for the router that comes with said deal? Thanks so much :)

Hi,

The Fixed LTE deal we have has a 1TB fair use policy. After that the service is capped at 1Mbps for the remainder of the month.

We supply the ZTE router and it has 2 x SMA ports that allows for an external antenna to be used. We don't supply the router but offer it for R1499 once off when buying the simcard with the router.

Do you mean we can buy a router from you? It isn't free?

Which SĂĽpersonic package was this by the way?

If it's the R999 Uncapped package, there is no threshold whatsoever, I can comfortably use over 1TB and true to their word, retention is kept completely.

I can confirm the degraded speeds however, it doesn't affect every province equally but there's been an overall decline in service since the deal(s) took off unfortunately.

It was the R999 Uncapped. What the speeds like after you hit 1TB? Sounds like Supersonic support just saying whatever they feel like again

Also, will the speeds I get on MTN be the same as the Afrihost, Supersonic, Axxess etc. F-LTE packages?

For Afrihost and Axxess yes. We use our own network and MTN is just the last mile provider.

@Captain Axxess Can elaborate more if you have question on Axxess LTE.

Yeah they've been known to give mixed answers sometimes lol.

Speeds are exactly the same after 1TB (no FUP whatsoever) unlike the alternatives, BUT, Afrihost etc. has an advantage with their own infrastructure being that their APNs are properly routed and speeds are generally faster / more reliable so you will need to decide which is more important.

Me being based in KZN for example, has a disadvantage with ping times (as everything is routed to and back from JHB first) and selective routing to Asia and USA can be exceptionally bad at times, with proxies being the only solution to this problem. That said, I thankfully haven't had major speed issues from day to day use, holding an average of 30mbps in the day and 90-100mbps at night, but the day speeds used to be better earlier this year (some people in cities can hold over 130mbps in the day) so it highly depends.

At least all these options aren't based on a contract so no major commitments need to be drawn, only headaches for a short while when you do need to cancel with SĂĽpersonic.
Afrihost I know from experience will provide excellent service in most regards.

Thanks so much for your detailed answer. I think my speeds will be relatively good as everyone in my area is either on copper, with Vodacom or Herotel as MTN signal here was so bad until a few months ago. Sounds like Afrihost would be a good idea, I just want to keep costs as low as possible. If I need to buy a router then so be it. Just glad the FUP with Supersonic is cleared up now. Know of a good proxy I could use if I had to go the Supersonic route?

Glad I could be of some assistance!

I personally use a homebrew proxy, with a server rented in the Netherlands and set up V2ray on it, this helps immensely with peak time shaping (happens on many ISPs unfortunately, but it's definitely not throttling) and gives me peace of mind with how I know it operates.

What I can recommend from my earlier experiments is the Basic tier via ProtonVPN and their new TCP accelerator as it runs very well and has a good reputation about them. The most cost effective would probably be the buffet option of Windscribe and selecting a US and EU option respectively to keep options open.

Almost anything will get around bad selective routing if necessary, the rest are just niceties + boosts and how much you trust a particular party.^^

Hi @RIOTza,

Our MTN Fixed LTE does not have FUP, however, Axxess does reserve the right to manage the top 25% of users in terms of usage.

We supply the ZTE MF286C at a discounted price of R1399. This router does allow for external antennas to be attached

Our uncapped package has also been slashed and is now sitting at R779.

Another question @Crumbl0x

This is the only thing I could find in Supersonics T's & C's about the uncapped FUP:

Fair Usage: Supersonic reserves the right to stop or alter the Uncapped package service when it reaches 1TB of usage within a period of 1 billing month. A customer may top up via the Supersonic Customer Portal in this event.

Here they even state that you need to top up in order to carry on using your UNCAPPED package that you pay R1000 a month for???

But you also don't get a FUP, so now I'm really confused

Thanks so much

If any representative from Supersonic could please clarify this, that would be amazing

Hmm, *maybe* this is the new T&C's that were implemented a while after the Black Friday sale, or maybe it's also a top 25% sort of implementation, or maybe it's at a discretion

I haven't been blocked or throttled yet approaching 2TB a few times this year, but I'll let everyone know immediately if something happens.

There is a dedicated thread I'm in where a few people have this package and so far no one has mentioned anything of the sorts, very strange if true though.

You mind linking me the thread?
Yeah just thought I should mention it cause it looked weird.
