Afrihost POC Network - Afrigreen Feedback

I think that any problems I was having before were due to my line. I checked the router stats and I had a TONNE of HEC errors under upload. I increased the SNR using ssh and it seems fine now.:)

Makes sense. How did you increase the SNR, just out of curiosity?

Slow, and as before Windows Updates are a mess, both networks suffer the same issues.

Windows updates are definitely working fine from my tests. My wife just bought a new laptop and did a crapload of windows updates and they really went pretty fast.

I'm always happy to test if you have specific links.

Everything was working fine, now its balls up!!

Even mybroadband isn't routing locally ??

That's pretty weird. It could be that for some reason we're not peering at NAP as we should be. I'll check if the same issue is happening on our regular MTN accounts :(

AfriGreen only worked properly for about a week, all down hill from there.
I am guessing Afrihost are using the same horrific bandwidth management system on AfriGreen as they do on AfriRed (MTN). The mind boggles. I can not fathom how testing can take almost 2 months and the bucket is still full of holes. AfriGreen is a utter waste of time, I will not be switching back to it.

AfriGreen has definitely been working well for probably just over a month for me. There have been a few wobblies here and there, and I've definitely experienced them with everyone else. But in general I'm happy to say my experience has been good for pretty much everything.

Testing a proof of concept takes a while. Remember we're not in a finished prototype phase, we're still reviewing the network from top to bottom. We're certainly not going to rush into production with known bugs to speed up the process. We'll continue to test and plan for as long as it takes so that the production network is as bug free as humanly possible.

Well I have no real issues with AfriGreen, I have used it all month now, first month in 8 that I have not needed to resort to an alternative ISP to get anything done.

But I still won't commit until I know how it handles under stress, i.e. when they start switching users over, and they have IPC in the Cape. The biggest issues I have had with Afrihost were all down to Lack of Capacity in Cape Town in the evenings.

IF they match the current leader but don't have roll-over on the cap, they lose anyway, I am now used to not having to discard bandwidth most months but buy top up in others.

Capacity in all regions is obviously going to be a primary concern and now that we will have direct control over the cost and implementation of IPC, we hope to be able to react quicker and take bigger risks to ensure a better client experience.

IN terms of rollover, we don't have any immediate plans to change how our products work, but once we have our new network in place, we'll have the breathing space to do the number crunching around new approaches to bandwidth like this. I can definitely promise that if our directors think the numbers will work, they'll do it.

How can I have any links for Windows Update, all I do is let Windows 10 download, and it sits for hours trying to updated the virus definition files which are usually really small.

We've also tested Windows 10 updates, definitely no issues there that I am aware of on Afrigreen.

Well well. Egg on my face. I trusted Afrihost. FFS why did I even think that AH can be trusted to get one critical download done last night to get my phone working again.
The network is screwed again! I could not get the downgrade of my phone because AH is a fuced up network that can't keep a connection for more than two hours.
Speed now: 30 kb/s

So yeah, you are screwing us again and again and again!

That definitely shouldn't be the case, I had no problems yesterday.

What was the download you were trying to pull down. Happy to test that link for you :(

Tried the iOS 8.4.1.

I think I already upgraded my phone, but let me see if my wife's iPad is updated yet :)

UPDATE: Ran it on my wife's iPad 3 - all seems pretty normal. Download was quick (about 150MB) and just waiting for the installation to finish now)

Well this is the issue I have, no one at Afrihost can replicate these issues, but if I log on with a different ISP, things work. So its not my router, the exchange or anything not related to Afrihost. Afrigreen used to work like a charm, compared to the normal network, and then recently the speed are the same and in some cases far worse than the normal network.

I think we'll definitely need to try to replicate this if we can, but then we need some specific steps to be able to do this. About 90%, if not more, of our office use Windows 10 and have all been running updates, and we haven't heard any specific issues regarding Windows updates, so we need to know what might be unique in the steps you are following that can create the same result.

Just a quick question.
Is your office on ADSL, like the users, or do you have a direct connection to your infrastructure?
If it is ADSL, do you use a standard retail account or is the Office, being in house, a unique package.
If you don't go out via ADSL and back in via IPC on a standard account then comparisons to your office wont work.

Edit:
On win10 specifically.
PC's in the same network will share Updates by default, rather than each downloading its own copy, so with more machines involved you should see faster updates.

At our office we have a fibre connection but our team don't run updates at the office because of the bandwidth. We all have standard Afrigreen capped accounts at home, using regular Telkom lines. We always encourage our team to have the same experience as clients so we'd rather sacrifice the extra bandwidth in order to highlight problems quicker.

I had to do the full 1.89 GB file as I was on iOS9. But have problems connecting my GoPro to my phone. So had to go back to iOS 8.4.1, but could not download the file as the connection kept on dropping last night.

Well all I do is open Windows 10, go to Settings, and check for updates, then it basically just sits.

I did the update via the Settings feature.

Did you download from iTunes? If you have a link, I can replicate that for you.

That's pretty much what we're doing as well. My wife is on Windows 7 still, but I'll chat to some of the guys running Windows 10 and ask if anyone has experienced the same. To my knowledge, this has not come up yet.
