Afrihost POC Network - Afrigreen Feedback

I'm mainly disappointed to see that you haven't seen any improvement between @Afrihost.co.za and @AfriGreen.

Any feedback you can give us will go a long way in figuring out why this is the case.

Well latency is worse, but you pointed that out as being the current routing via jhb.
Streaming is still bad in the evenings and suddenly returns to full speed at 11PM, basically the same as the old network.
Google has improved, but as I use it for work I still reverted to my stable Telkom account to use it for anything critical, tomorrow I will use it for work and see.

But as I said, an improvement over @Afrihost.co.za was a given, it could not be worse, my expectation was a network that ran like your old IS network, pre MTN and all the exotic routing experiments that led us down to this low level of expectancy.

As you didn't refute that we pay for the bandwidth that we are using to test I assume that you now agree that we are paying to test....

I must say this, just like everyone else I am completely disappointed in the way this mess was handled.
But I am yet to find another service provider who offers Uncapped Unshaped Data at the same price point as Afrihost.

When this whole mess started I signed up for various business accounts with other providers to test, such as Web Africa, Vox & Mweb.

They all shape Torrents & VPN into the ground and have some sort of "Soft-Cap" or "Start Rating" system.
I came very close to cancelling Afrihost, but after testing the others I found them to become useless after reaching a certain point in Usage.

So I am no way defending Afrihost, But they do offer the best bang for your buck, even with all the problems I can at least use the internet without fear of reaching some artificial limit/restriction or breaking the bank.

I really do hope AfriGreen or AfriBlue sorts these problems out for good, because I really do not know who to go to next.

Just from my testing.

Web Africa Business 10Mbps Uncapped
- Same Price as Afrihost
- Star Rating kicks in at 350GB (Internet becomes useless)
- VPN connections are slow

VOX 10mbps Uncapped
- Way over priced @ R4774
Home Account badly shaped

Mweb 4mbps Uncapped Unshaped
- Way over priced @ R1899
- Premium account badly shaped
- Get warning emails when using VPN
- Don't offer 10mbps unshaped

Just my 2 cents

@Hummercellc, I hear you on the uncapped and that is why I avoided it. When paying for a capped account one can reasonably expect to receive full speed, 24/7 until the data you paid for in advance is used up. That is no longer the case with Afrihost, yet I have no problem on Telkom, or WebAfrica. I have not tried VOX, but as it costs less than this Afrihost mess and the Data rolls over I have nothing to lose by moving, where as staying looks like I will be throwing good money after bad. I stayed because in the past they have lived up to their promises, but this mess is too little too late and I feel like an Idot for trusting them.

I have only just got round to changing over. Speedtest on My Broadband indicates a huge improvement.

I was able to have NNTP download running in the background and still stream youtube in 720p, no buffering....So far so good....Haven't started online gaming as yet, haven't tested twitch today but AH is working on the twitch.tv issue....

Got my details yesterday, but thanks to Eskom could not do any real testing, but today I have found the following on the Green Network...

Speedtest are good, actually perfect as far as my line goes. Getting 8.4Mbps down (my distance from the Exchange does not allow for higher) with about 30ms ping on my 10Mbps line.

Torrents getting 900kbps+ on downloads so very happy there!

Youtube and Facebook Videos play well even on 1080p, with decent seeking performance.
Twitch unfortunately still buffers, I only tested on "Source" setting because My line can handle it.

Gaming is actually good, no difference in international latency but at least no packet loss.

I'll keep testing as much as I can...

I got my AfriGreen account last week but have been putting off using it until now because of the warnings of intermittent issues while they tweak things. But tonight my "normal" Afrihost account (8mb Business) was so bad that I couldn't even get onto Facebook. Also, this week, my latency to pretty much anywhere in the world, including South Africa was over 200ms.

So my very early impression of AfriGreen so far is good. Latency is fantastic compared to the "normal" account, and my browsing seems improved (that is to say, I can actually browse now).

I tested Supersport streaming since there have been complaints about it here, and there is definitely a problem there. At first, the stream stammered and buffered, then eventually seemed to stabilize. However, it never kicked into HD mode, even after five minutes. Usually that happens after about 20 seconds on my normal account.

The same can't be said for Youtube; I am able to stream 1440p without a single buffer. Impressive!

Will keep an eye on things and keep posting my findings here...

That's awesome to hear!

Twitch.tv is something we are working as JesseG pointed out, getting decent streaming quality on anything above Medium is tricky, but we'll get to the bottom of it!

I see there is no CDN for twitch.tv, thats the issue.

I on the other hand am still awaiting feedback on the support issue I logged.
The experience is currently awful. This is not workable.
All I can do is Browsing... and that's slow.

Having an average night on Afrigreen and a terrible night on Afrihost

My standard account cant even load a speed test

Here is the afrigreen

The jitter at JHB is really high, and the speed is nowhere near what I normally get - again the JHB test

I'm speaking under correction, but I don't Twitch.tv has any CDN's in South Africa at the moment. When I last checked most ISPs were routing Twitch.tv internationally.

You and me both. Still waiting for someone to deal with my 'isolated' issue.

Scrap that, tried Afrigreen again now, and I don't seem to be getting any strange timeouts (yet). But still getting randomly high latency on the third hop.

There is not turbocharge option on Afrigreen, and when you throttle, its worse than Afristandard.

My AfriGreen just came to life, running stream shot up to 1.09MBs, and fully buffered in a couple of min's, having started at only 200KBs
