Here's an idea: get in touch with the mods on MyBB here and make a time for an AMA with Gian. Have the mods watch the thread (just like Reddit does) and have a cleaner Q&A thread for discussing the ins and outs of your work to resolve ongoing issues. Appearing on MyBB with his original thread that ballooned quickly because it wasn't moderated was indeed madness. Keep it to between two to three hours long. Once its done, lock the thread and ask a mod for a sticky for about a month or so so that people can find it easily.

So long as you enter into the AMA with firm rules about discussions in the thread and keep it to a Q&A process, you should have a much better time getting your points across and addressing any specific concerns people have about Afrihost's future, or anything else related to it.

That's a great idea. Didn't know MyBB offered that though, has anyone ever done this before?

Since Afrigreen started, my normal business account went pear shaped, and Afrigreen, well, sometimes it performed 100%, other times just no connection, slow speeds etc.

that sucks! but definitely odd that you have no problems on regular network. Any results I can look at to get an idea?

We have had some occasional problems so it definitely hasn't been completely smooth sailing. But now, for instance, AfriGreen should be going well. I'm on an AfriGreen account, so I can test anything from my side to compare with your experience :(

No, I've never seen an AMA on here before. But, it couldn't hurt to ask about it, and try be the first. With MyBB doing everything else like the annual conference, and generally being the place that people go to first to learn about internet and technology in SA, it makes sense to also have AMAs of a similar nature relating to internet.

Some Feedback about @afrigreen

From about 1am pages won't open properly and pingtests keeps timing out.

Can't post stats as I couldn't open mybroadband.

Really weird. Been on AfriGreen since this morning, and not seeing this. Any tests that you can post?

Thanks for the reminder, I have just visited this page for the first time. Of the two remaining issues and five resolved issues I don't see any meaningful updates along the lines "...what the status of the POC is in terms of achieving the intended objectives, what is happening with AfriBlue, has the reduction in load on AfriVanilla been significant enough to relieve the pressure there and so on." I guess these questions need the CEO to convey and he is otherwise occupied.

For me it is not such a big deal anymore. The initial excitement of a shiny new network has passed...

I don't think we're planning to publish a project plan, and I think in general we have given feedback on how the network performs here, though I think that is also reflected in the user posts as well. Even if Gian were to give comment, it would be more from a high level company overview, not the sort of technical detail you're alluding to here.

A lot of us here don't even think that you have a project plan............
There are not indicated targets, Time scales, etc. Just the same old continue to pay us and we will eventually deliver what we promised. The closest we have ever been given to a time scale is SOON...and it has been ongoing in the South for over 6 months.

I am TeamViewering to JHB, while torrenting at >500KB/s with Skype, email and browsing all working.

A little wobble last night, but fully recovered this morning.

I am beginning to feel excited now... I still have the lingering dread in the back of the mind that this is the exception rather than the norm, but am living in hope that is is not.

Anyone with experience in IT implementation of this sort would know that you have to have some project plans, milestones and guidelines in place, or it would never get off the ground. Obviously things shift, tasks have interdependencies and there are internal and external factors affecting timelines.

Assuming that there is nothing in place would be a little weird, considering how far we've already come with AfriGreen.

Some changes being implemented that may result in a few minutes of downtime.

I am still getting massive packet loss on Afrigreen this morning. Telkom account is fine, so its not my line. Who do I contact to get it sorted out?

When I was still an AH customer, I went through two periods of hellish packet loss and dismal speeds as a result of the South IPC being constrained. The first period took two months to resolve and the second one, that caused my leaving, happened just before Gian's 3AM email to customers telling them that things were going pear-shaped with optimising the additional IPC (which included flying in experts to help, no less). Afrihost has a reputation now of being good for nine months of the year and not so great for the other three, and I've seen this happen for two years in a row.

AfriBlue and AfriGreen is important for your future health and growth as a company, but you need to tell your customers why things are going to be any different now. Unless you're planning to provision capped and uncapped customers on different networks, there's no guarantees that six months to a year down the line we won't see the same mistakes being made.
