Afrihost POC Network - Afrigreen Feedback

I agree with other posters - we need more accurate guidance as to when AH plans for testing to be complete, decide on a POC and finalise.

Today is the 24th... If one wants to throw in the proverbial Afrihost towel or 'pause the service' without being billed for a full August up front, it needs to be logged today - am I right?

I'm afraid we can't give you guys fixed dates, setting up a brand new network doesn't work like that I'm afraid :( We're working through as many points as possible, building up everything on the network.
When you guys see a more stable Afrigreen we'll start the next phase.

Afrigreen possible email issue.
I have windows 7 running windows livemail as email client. I have two ISP's - now Afrigreen and Vox.
When connected to Afrigreen, my ####@afrihost.zo.za mails are received but not sent. gmails received and sent no problem.
When connected to Vox the same happens.
My afrihost email account SMTP is smtp.afrihost.co.za
Please advise what the settings should be for Afrigreen and for Vox if anybody knows.
EDIT
I got Livemail to send afrihost mail while connected to Afrigreen using smtp.afrihost.co.za
When connected to Vox, the mail client cannot find smtp.afrihost.co.za
Any suggestions please

Your mail should still work when using Afrigreen, not sure when using other network though.
What errors are you seeing when you try and send mail?

Getting some really bad latency and packet loss to my Minecraft server

Confirmed with other players it's just me :(

Downloads were going at 1mbps

Started streaming football game. Was streaming fine at first. But now bit laggy at 200kbps.

Browsing also struggling a bit too.

That is very odd. Would you mind sharing the download source so I can see if we can get this replicated?

This is not something I can easily do I'm afraid. You would need a user account on the box itself which I can't give you.

I just repeated the test with a 1gig file. Downloaded via http (port 80) and it came down at 8mbps. Immediately downloaded the file via sFTP (port 7040) and it is coming down at about 2.5mbps. Hard to believe there's no port-level shaping going on here based on those results. Is Afrihost's "business optimization" on by default with AfriGreen accounts perhaps?

Furthermore, I am SSHing into my box at home, also on a non-standard port, and let me tell you, it takes about 20 seconds for anything to appear on-screen after typing! Definitely something odd going on here!

I'd advise checking the business optimization, mine was off then I checked again and boom on. Not sure if its actually implemented yet tho.

Heya guys.

Seeing a few posts here around packet loss - could you please grab a traceroute/ MTR to mybroadband.co.za and twitter.com and paste them here please?

please dont use speed of me, its inaccurate.

Relative to what?
What did you use as a calibration standard to arrive at that statement?
Can you prove that any of them are accurate, all speed tests are transient and relative?

All really bad here.

Also quick question. Should Business Optimization be active or should deactivate it?

Have to agree with caroper here...
That is a dangerous statement.

I've posted in the past how speedof.me rendered more accurately what my actual web (in particular streaming) experience was.
All this while Ookla's various iterations were mostly showing blistering speeds, regardless of the actual experience. You can look it all up: multi-threading types, vs bla bla bla etc etc etc which I frankly don't understand.
From what I've read, many 'experts' actually support my theory, that HTML5-based test like speedof.me would show more accurately what the actual experience is.
Admitted, I don't understand too much of it, yet speedof.me more consistently confirms my suspicions when things go awry, and also when they are great :)

NB: In fact... you should try it! ;)

Yup, mine was active. Doesn't seem to have made any difference though. It's really bad at the moment; I'm going back to my normal account for now.
