Afrihost POC Network - Afrigreen Feedback

Gotcha, thanks.

In any event, the source is not to blame. I guarantee it can serve far more than the mere 8mbps I am asking of it. Will give AfriGreen the benefit of the doubt for now and try my WebAfrica capped account this afternoon when I have a gap. If that's better, you can always switch me back to my "normal" Afrihost account right?

Keep me posted :)
You can still switch back to your normal Afrihost account for now.

Didn't realise I could switch back myself... I've done so, and sorry to say, the improvement is immediate. 8mbps steady. In 20 mins or so I should have some graph data to show you the difference.

I'm not aware of a problem with Apple specifically, but it could be that Apple don't allow caching of their content locally (I know they don't allow any caching for their updates). We'll need to see where the traffic is coming from.

In terms of bandwidth, audio is pretty minimal. I'm usually using Simfy all the time and it doesn't even affect my traceroutes.

Yes, Simfy is streaming reliably at the moment on AfriGreen. Thanks. Would still be nice to have both working, I use iCloud and all that and all my music is in Apples cloud. I suspect there are quite a few customers who do the same...

Twitch is much better (little to no buffering on high, source still unusable for me) ... YT is better as well ... Able to 1080/720 ... ... For some reason I still buffer a bit on 1080 but 720p is perfect (most of the time, after 19:30, it seems to go to pot though)

One thing I have noticed is strange packet loss while playing online ... anyone else having this issue ? ... ... Experienced it again last night in Dota, my ping seemed fine bouncing between 33ms and 75ms ... but it would slide show quite a bit ... Switched back to my Reg AH account and it stopped

My question is, If AfriBlue is still not ready, when can we expect to see solid improvements?

How long will "Testing" continue for? Another Month?

We sort of need answers here, The MTN Network is borked, Afrigreen is a bit inconsistent and AfriBlue is yet to make an appearance.

The "Soon" answer is no longer helping, as it has been almost a month now.

No trying to start a fight, just need some real feedback here.

Im all new to this so please correct me if I am wrong. Does the Afrigreen network use Neotel backbone and will the Afriblue use Telkom?

No exactly,

From what I have gathered, and I could be completely wrong.

Afrihost has IPC directly from Telkom Wholesale, which is back-hauled by NeoTel to the Teraco Data Center which then connects to Nap-Africa for all peering.

Cool beans, looking forward to checking out some results :)

Could you let me know where you're streaming through with Apple? Are you using Apple music?
Sorry, complete Apple newb here :p

Great to hear you're seeing improvements around Twitch :)
I think we're still ironing our some gaming stuff, I know we've seen some issues with MWEB Gamezone which should be addressed.

We're seeing improvements on Afrigreen across the board at the moment, we want to get this sorted first. We simply can't launch Afriblue now - not an efficient time.
Unfortunately lighting up a new network takes time as there are a host of tweaks and fiddly things to get through.

Neotel is one of the many providers we're using. No details are confirmed around Afriblue just yet.

Hope this makes sense... You're looking at the traffic since this morning at about 8am. Notice how AfriGreen is very erratic. The same download on Afrihost MTN is maxing my 8mbps account.

Sorry, complete Apple newb here :p

Yes, standard Apple music streaming using iTunes. Two streaming models - Apple Music and Apple Radio. Music is streamed on demand from iCloud service - where for a subscription you get access to the entire (?) Apple iTunes catalogue of music. Announced recently and available in SA. Competes with Spotify and other subscription services like Google music, Rdio and Simfy etc.

It is a new service, but would be nice for the AH team to add to the list of services that constitute "live" streaming services for prioritisation. Just for interest: http://www.techcentral.co.za/why-apple-could-still-lead-in-streaming-music/57351/

I know nothing about the network protocols used etc, sorry.

Only received Afrigreen test details this week.
Mixed results.

Last two-three days I'm getting very similar performance on AH MTN account and AfriGreen.
One minute fast, then slow, then fast again.

The test below shows probably the best that I've had so far on AG:

I agree with other posters - we need more accurate guidance as to when AH plans for testing to be complete, decide on a POC and finalise.

Today is the 24th... If one wants to throw in the proverbial Afrihost towel or 'pause the service' without being billed for a full August up front, it needs to be logged today - am I right?

That is very odd. Would you mind sharing the download source so I can see if we can get this replicated?

Thanks for confirming!
I haven't seen anything brought up before, I think it may be best to get the experience submitted directly via ClientZone as it's easier for our network guys to trend there.
