Hey guys

Just a quick one around Twitch - we've implemented some changes and improvements. I've been testing this stream today and seem to see better throughput, no buffering on high for me http://www.twitch.tv/loserfruit.

Could you guys run some tests and report back?
Thanks so much!

Oh yes Twitch is back to normal for me. High quality no buffering at all. Glorious, thanks AfriGuy.

Basic Report:

Your packet loss was 0%.
Your average ping was 5ms.
Your maximum ping was 82ms.

Looking at your average ping, your line seems to be running perfectly.
Looking at your maximum ping, however, it seems as though there could be a slight intermittant issue on the line. If required, please post the results to a forum post.

It seems that your maximum ping is also good. If there are any issues, they most probably lie with your ISP

This looks like you're running the ping to a local network point, could you run it to an external IP or host?

Those are excellent results for a 6Mbps account :)

Was getting even better results than that last week but not complaining now :)

Will keep testing during the day to see if anything changes. Hopefully we don't have a weekend like last.

For a 6Mbps line those results aren't too bad. Why did it need to be dropped though, were you seeing poor stats?

Yes indeed poor stats - the line was previously dropped from VDSL 20 to ADSL 10 because of distance from the DSLAM
and then further dropped to 4 mbps for nearly a year ! so it was Upped this week to 6 mbps

(I guess I was setting my hopes to high for closer to 10 mbps :-L

AfriGuy / AfriMan, maybe you can elucidate and give us some insights as to what exactly the cause was:
Afrihost probleme ticket [#HBP-756-51647]
Telkom reference for the same: 59BWK080815

thanks

Looks like the SNR is too weak for a higher sync than 6Mbps, it's just holding on with it's current sync.
Have you noticed any noise on your voice line?

Also, try and hookup POTS filters on all Telkom ports in the house, even the ones without any devices connected. This seems to help with noise.

Hi Afriman.

I haven't tried torrents again in the last 2 weeks so I cant give much feedback on how it is now. I will see what I can schedule this weekend and let you know.
I prefer streaming lately as per the site I mentioned.

Today I spent most of the day watching a few series, and I can say it worked perfectly, the stream would start and reach around 800KB's enough to play and buffer 1080 content, as the buffer grew bigger it would slow down but as the video played it would increase again as needed. This has been a total different experience to what I get in the evenings.

Lets see what happens after 8pm tonight.
Most of my issues are related to after hours, daytime usage is perfect.
Wishing there was a cape town IPC.

lets see what happens this weekend.

Yes my Vox account tested at over 8.7 this is my home network so not using it during the day but when I got home just now the speed was up again to 8.72. It's usually late at night that these problems seems to happen when you guys are sleeping or partying!

We did find some issues which have been resolved, so you should expect improvement. But let's monitor at night when you've seen poor performance previously :)

Some pretty big changes were made today so please give it a go and let us know what happens. I expect you should see better performance all round :)

I would like to brag about Afrihost and the Multimedia experience across my Home Network.
It sucks when people come over and everything buffers. lol

Thanks AfriGuy

The POTS line is a white elephant - it is hardly ever used ;-{ But YES, there is sometimes some crackling audible - will try more filters

My modem/router (Dlink DSL-2750U), connected on ADSL_2plus mode, reports an SNR margin (dB) of 66-67 downstream and 120 upstream.

This seems to be 10 times what the Afrihost ClientZone ios App reports when I ask it to test my line:
Telkom Exchange (Downstream): SNR 11.00 dB
My Location (Upstream): SNR 5.00 dB

why this discrepancy, AfriGuy ?

Definitely - it's great when you can impress people with some awesome internet (except when they rape your GB's)

It depends on what standard they're using to measure, so it seems like dBu or dBmV. Not sure which one Telkom uses to be completely honest :(

Please tell the team not to make changes before they go home for the weekend and leave us with a ball of snot like last weekend.....

The team work through most weekends these days, so if there are any reported issues they should pick them up anyway. But to my knowledge there is nothing major planned for the weekend :)

Not even 6 PM and http downloads have slowed to a crawl 20KB/s on a 10meg link.
Fortunately I am on my way out for the evening so I don't care how long it takes, but it is a bad omen for the rest of the weekend.
