I think the results are good considering that I am on an unstable 4mb line, I am approx 5km from my exchange.

I'm not downloading with torrents, just normal downloads.

Also If the problem never happened before why would it all of a sudden start now?

Isn't the whole point of being unshaped that I should be able to download at full speed and browse?

It's hard for me to comment based on a general perspective. I can tell you this is definitely not the case in general so I definitely suspect a local network issue here. Could be a firmware update required, network device that is faulty, anything really. If this was a network problem, we would definitely be seeing more complaints of this nature :(

Definitely looking pretty positive there :)

So you think the problem could be at my exchange?

Is there anything I can do?

I would look at your local network first. Make sure that your router firmware is up to date, look at all possible settings on the router, QoS/DNS etc and see if there is anything there that influences your experience.

I've updated my router firmware.

My DNS settings are google DNS.

Depends on your router. Maybe you want to just switch all those settings off if they are active or check your user manual.

Maybe also use our regular DNS for testing for now, unless you need Google DNS for specific purposes.

Okay. Will try different settings and see how it goes.

Will update once I have.

So done all that.

Updated firmware.

Changed DNS settings back to afrihost DNS.

Nothing in my manual about QoS settings on my netgear DGN router.

I've also just noticed. When I'm on wireless my downloads go at 700kbps and that's when I'm unable to do any browsing but when I'm on cable my downloads go at around 500kbps and then I'm able to do browsing.

That's pretty weird. Can't imagine what different network settings would be between wireless and cable. Very weird :(

And it's a problem I've only been having for a week and a half. Started previous Friday when you'll were making changes to the network and hasn't been right since. Not sure if that's the reason or if that's just coincidence.

Any other suggestions on what I can do? Because it's an incredibly frustrating problem.

Sounds like a coincidence. I can't think of any change we could make at network level that would affect how local traffic is managed :(

And now my download speeds has dropped to 300-400kbps and I can't browse whether on wireless or cable if downloading.

So basically my line is not even being maxed out and I still can't browse while downloading.

Download-speed-error-browsing.jpg

As you can see from the image. Download speed is slow and still can't browse.

Edit* Testing with my web africa account now and I'm getting 1mbps download speed and I'm able to browse at the same time. So doesn't seem like a problem on my side.

My suggestion, BEFORE you jump through endless loops, grab yourself a test account first and test with that...I'm not promoting anyone here, get one from WA, VOX, CW, pretty much anyone giving out test accounts...it's just WAY quicker to troubleshoot.

You mentioned you never had any problems before? so how exactly would firmware help? If it REALLY was firmware...then pretty much everyone using the same router as you would have started complaining...makes sense doesn't it?

So, steps to troubleshoot when you start experiencing problems:
1 - DON"T CHANGE ANY SETTINGS!
2 - input test account username/password in your router
3 - do the same thing you tried to do earlier
4.1 - no problems? - IT"S YOUR ISP, *** THEM OUT!!
4.2 - problems still? unlikely, traceroute would say if it's your exchange, if it isn't, then it's something on your home network, most likely your pc.

yep. Just tested with web africa account and that works fine. No issues with that today. Getting even better speeds than Afrigreen and can browse while downloading too.

I think if you read through the history here, it's really difficult to say that this could be a network level issue. Firmware would be at different levels, depending on when updates are run, so it won't necessarily hinge on the model but the state of the firmware based on the last update, based on the frequency of updates. Same goes for OS versions on hardware and devices and all the other possible combinations that make up the local network.

I think if this was network level, we'd see many people (with different router models) seeing this exact issue, which we're not at all.

As I mentioned above. Have tested with my web africa account and that's working fine. 1mbps download speed and can browse as well.

Afrigreen and Normal Afrihost business account download speeds have dropped to 300-400kbps and still can't browse as well while downloading.

So now I don't know what else to do.

Can't be an issue with my network if one is working fine and other isn't?

Really don't know what is happening here. But I'm downloading and browsing at the moment, definitely seems normal on my side.

So you're saying this is NOT a network issue then? Ok, the hundreds of posts with users struggling (yes, I admit there are goods stories in there too) is then just pure coincidence...

I know it's hundreds of posts because I have been keeping an eye on the AH threads since I moved couple of months back.

oh and ps...I'm really not looking for a fight or anything...just so you know :D
