Afrihost Slow Uncapped

Holy ceiling cat people, can someone spell "overreaction"?!

By all means, if this is the new permanent speed you're gonna get, then switch providers! But there's no evidence that this isn't just a temporary problem caused by some unforeseen glitch! Events like this have happened before in the old capped days too at all ISPs, who knows what the technical difficulty may be this time around? Relax until you discover that there really is a reason to run around like the sky is falling!

Always easy to speak when its not affecting you.

If Afrihost actually said there was a problem, and not "try again in 30min" - it'd be a different story.

The sad thing is, good luck trying to get them to cancel it so close to the end of the month.

I'll just lodge a dispute with the bank - I'm not paying for a 4MB service and getting almost 512KB speeds as above.

Logged a ticket with Afrihost (15kb/sec as well)

This is the response:

Hi Kevin.

I trust that you are well.:)

We do see a string of port errors on your authentications with afrihost as can be seen below, please laise with telkom to re-synchronise your line on the exchange.

Have a great day & please feel free to let me know if I can be of further assistance.

My router's history graph, just to show how badly afrihost has been shaping since 7am today.

And it's not my line, its syncing at 4096.

4mbit line might aswell be 384k...

They've done something in the last 20mins or so..

Web browsing is now bearable on the Afrihost account...

Well I've just logged a support ticket with them too. I can't even watch youtube clips let alone download anything. I understand if they're having problems...but then at least send me an e-mail. Ah well...I suppose we will get teething problems in the beginning (doesn't make it any more fun to sit though though - it's like smelling the braai next door and then realising that you have no meat in the house).

connected back with afrihost:

authentication went quickly but downloads are still at 15kb/sec and youtube vids dont load

so its definitely not a line/telkom problem

And so we wait. Seems we are all getting the same answer. I even tested with my capped account and got great speeds!

email just received:

Hi Kevin.

We have also been advised of the following via our server-admin.

"The Afrihost uncapped solutions are designed to give great results for the first 60GB of usage, but after that Afrihost will shape or throttle the service to protect other users on the network. You will still be able to use your account and it will never be capped, but it will not be as fast as our capped accounts at that point. Our capped accounts are designed for users who require continuous downloads 24 hours a day. The uncapped service is relatively new and we will be looking at how we can improve these thresholds as more clients join our network.
Have a great day & please feel free to let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Warm regards.
