Okay, so I'm new to the whole ADSL thing...joined Afrihost (512K) end of January.

For the first 3 weeks I was getting 50-52Kb/s download speed on NZB-SA, which is consistent with my line speed.

For the past 2 weeks my speeds have dropped to around 10Kb/s...I tried everything (resetting modem, etc.) but nothing helped. So I concluded I was being throttled.

[I've been averaging about 2gigs per day BEFORE my speeds dropped.]

I thought that since today being a new month, my speeds would be back to normal again...but alas it's still at 10Kb/s.

Please help...doesn't anyone know what's going on here, or should I phone Afrihost support line to complain???

your beign thorttle, you need wait for the throttle period to be over, to get decent speeds again.

throttle period can be some days, not sure how it works.

I hope this clarifies the matter and after rading this email I was sent moved to another ISP

Thanks for the mail to us and I profusely apologize for the late response.

Unfortunately your account has been shaped due to high usage, I have given you details below on how uncapped bandwidth is monitored and shaped according to IS, through whom your ADSL is bought.

Will the usage be reset at the start of the new month - simply put the answer is no.
The reason for this is because of the way the account is handled. The IS uncapped accounts are on a 10 day rolling over period which started when you first migrated over to the IS network.

ie: if you migrated on the 15th your first 10 day period if from the 15th to the 25th of the month and so on the second from the 25th to the 5th etc.

Are we planning on implementing an system for you to monitor the amount you have used versus the amount available before being managed --- again simply put no.

The reason for this is because, the monitoring policy that runs on the IS uncapped accounts are done as I mentioned on a 10 day roll over window. The estimates are as follows, and are good guidelines to follow to remain unshaped and not be throttled at all. 384kbps 5 gig in 10 days average of 500 mb per day , 512kbps 7.5 gig in 10 days averaging 750 mb per day, 4mbps 15 gig in a 10 day roll over window averaging 1.5 gig per day.

If you stay with in those limits the account will not be shaped and throttled but this is subject to the discretion of IS.

If you are a high ADSL usage client, may I suggest looking into our capped accounts which are not shaped, or we can move your account over to IS which will increase your speeds.

If you would like our ADSL Team leader to contact you tomorrow morning regarding the different options available to you and the most cost effective way to browse the internet the way YOU want to, please do not hesitate to let me know what number Albert can contact you on and at what time would be the most convenient to you.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any further assistance.

Warm Regards
Zoe

IMHO, you should have called them before posting.

Very valid point.

Afrihost is incredibly helpful. Pop an e-mail off to them (if, like me, you hate phoning). Their responses are super quick and pretty useful.
It's also a good idea to have a read-through of their AUP (Acceptable Usage Policy) to avoid little snags like this in the future...

Thanks for the great help everyone...at least now I know what the problem is. How can they call it "uncapped" when you're only supposed to download 7.5gigs within a 10-day period! The insanity...

Well, I'm going to cancel my Afrihost account and join who??? MWeb, Openweb...which ISP doesn't shape/throttle?

They all shape on uncapped accounts afaik - unless you're willing to pay an exorbitant fee on unshaped uncapped interwebs.
If you want full line speed but with a cap then maybe try TRL Tech - they seem to have decent bundles at decent prices.
But if you have to have uncapped then I'd suggest MWEB.

mweb and openweb gold dont throttle :)

though they shape, though openweb gold should give full speed on news, almost 24/7.

if you use payed news server on on mweb it should also, or there server cached content will be max speed

TRL FTW!!!!!

A friend of mine had a TRL account - correct me if I'm wrong, but apparently they don't have any interface to check your usage?
Probably not a big issue on uncapped, but it could be problematic on accounts where you have a set capsize.

just buy normal unshaped , also full speed 24/7 on anything.

it does not have setup fee etc.

Afrihost FTW !!!
Have 5 x 4mb bonded lines ( mixed capped + uncapped )
Best ISP we have used in 10 years
