Afrihost throttling speeds?

Yea just to add my 2 cents, i did an international streaming compare to the exact same site, exact same clip between my Afrihost 1GB (it was uncapped last month) and my WebAfrica Titan 25Gb right now [sunday 3pm, so it's considered "off-peak"].

(i'm on a 4 Mbit/s line)

Afrihost could not even stream faster than 100 kBytes...mostly settling at about 64-80 kBytes/sec (512-640 kbit/sec)
WA was doing 250 kBytes/sec easily and settling on 200 kBytes/sec . (1.6 Mbits/sec)

That is more than TRIPLE the speed.

There's no reason for Afrihost to throttle my 1GB account either , so all i can say is, either IS is just plain crap or Afrihost is SHAPING like crazy and/or having seriously high contention ratios.

Now the only reason why i was doing this test is because i've been blowing through my WA package much faster than i anticipated (obviously because i'm getting alot more speed) and was considering going back to uncapped...so i figured i'd just compare for interest sake....and the results did not look great at all.

Will try an afrihost 5GB account i was given a bit later... busy doing a rapidshare free a/c download and can't pause :/

hopefully it goes at full line speed. 512k... and if it does, then i am like 90% sure it's 4mb users.

Very well might be, i certainly get 512k at least , but sure nowhere near 4096 .

Ok so did the whole 512k line thing, maxed out at like 55kb...

I MIGHT upgrade my a/c to a 512k for r100 more! get a few more kb out of this deal...

Awesome! Pity the 512 option from Telkom is so badly priced :(

I'm not concerned with linespeed, but my latency to Europe has degraded terribly since the release of uncapped accounts, obviously especially at peak times. The issue is that the same thing has happened for my Cybersmart (unshaped) and WebAfrica (unshaped) accounts also. What is there left to turn to :( ? I'm beginning to feel like I'd be willing to pay an ISP not to offer any uncapped services, just to maintain my normal quality of internet access. Although, if I had that kind of money, I'd probably sue one or two of these ISPs first for false advertising...

I feel exactly the same here. The torrent whores are really killing it for the guys who need low latency. :P

Afrihost == sucks

Think that it is also time for me to cancel my Afrihost contract.

I am lucky if I get more than 0.5Mb on a standard Afrihost capped account: generally it is around 0.3Mb

Switch to WebAfrica & I immediately get 3.5Mb.

The last time IS blamed Telkom. I have now repeated the speed tests [for both ISPs] on several occasions and the results are consistent: Afrihost & IS suck big-time.

(I have once more logged the problem with Afrihost. I'm not holding my breadth about getting a reply)

Afrihost is the suck
Cannot do a damn thing on this piece of sheeeet uncapped service. Webafrica titan accounts are sold out. Time for a bridge jump now to

IMO, the current best line at AH an the moment is 384k, even thou it has it's ups and downs but most of them are ups

I see the Titan Complete packages are still available, but that means you'll have to move your line to WA too.

We have been getting no joy with AH. Our trouble is not with line speed it is with a VPN tool that we use to connect to our client databases all over the country. Since switching to uncapped we have had constant connection problems.

We decided to call telkom again (imagine that) to buy thier 3 for 1 gig account and when we used that account our vpn tool worked perfectly. This indicated to us that the problem was with AH.

I emailed them to enquire and all I got back was scripted responses from at least four different people. After answering each email from them explaining that we need a specific port unshaped a "manager" named KEENAN told me that the problem is with IS and not with AH.

This was over 1 month ago and we have still not heard from KEENAN, even though I have made more than 6 calls to reach him. He is always busy, no-one else can help us, we never get a response (besides we will get back to you), they never get back to you with a real solution and all the while we have to pay them for their rather terrible uncapped service while having to buy bandwidth at other suppliers to accomodate our needs.

But wait there is more....

This morning I changed our account from uncapped to capped 15 gig. Nothing happened even though the effective date said that it would start today. I called their call centre and got through to some sleepy sounding guy. He told me to hold and I ended up holding and holding listening to nothing for a minute and half until i just hung up.

I cannot believe that Gian is not taking this more seriously. AH have really let us down. Problem is they offered a good deal, it's just a pity they cannot really deliver the goods.

We hear people say, give them a chance. I did give them a chance and for a short while I was happy but asking us to be patient while they get better is like buying a car that cannot brake properley and then saying, be patient, they are learning how to help you stop your car after telling you how nice it is to drive..

I feel angry about this and guess I must change my perception...

Did I mention that KEENAN said he would get back to me but never has. Don't trust a word he says or rather just change your perception and everything will be ok...

Switched to 512k uncapped for r100 extra. downgrade fee seems to be free because when i clicked on 384k again it said R0.00 etc etc...

Let's see if the speeds increase by 12kb or so.

Ok,

Speeds are definitely better.... doing a http download, haven't even disconnected and reconnected yet and can see the difference. maxing out @ 67.5kb and well, minimum is like 20kb because i am connected via wireless to the lounge router...

Let's see how much i can do on torrents :D

For the first time in a while speeds were terrible last night on my 384k line, @ 9kb/s, I didn't even bother to download or even browse. But its back to normal again this morning hopefully it stays that way tonight

I switched to WebAfrica's Titan Data 2 special on Sunday, and still have my Afrihost account till the end of the month - comparing the two, I can see how badly the Afrihost account performs in comparison. Not to mention, for R299 with WA I get 25gb. For R290 with Afrihost I get 10gb and sub-standard service. Very glad that I moved elsewhere...

On uncapped 384 here and it has been downloading international nzbs at 40KBps since the beginning of the month without any issues.

Wait until you hit the quota mark for 384k and let us know the results

The quota is 40GB so Im not phased - will probably end up at around 32GB, like last month and that was including the dirt 2 steam download (10.2GB)
