Afriman please lead out your inbox. Its full..

I am still shaped badly. 18.8% http and 6.25%. 5th day of 24/7 shaping...
Im not one of the lucky ones whose shaping is now gone.

Any update as to what's causing the excessive demand on the afrihost network?

I deleted 1000 messages about 3 or 4 days ago - I'll go delete some more :(

Sorry about that :(

If this is the case then why are some people still being heavily shaped and others (like me) are not? And why are there different shaping policies being applied to different users at the same time? If they shape base on network load an not according to individual usage then surely the shaping should be uniform for all users on a given package?

Anybody else think that maybe the NSA has a hand in this?

Yeah that doesnt make sense to me either. would probably be a good idea for those that are still shaped to post total usage + line speed (sure there was something else i was meant to put in here :/)

I have a feeling that maybe shaping is also applied based on the Line speed.

The only other reasons would be: Glitch in the system or users are shaped based on network load and total useage. But then again... would they want to tarnish their name by doing something like that?

EDIT:Really :/ cant get a post in before someone else replies :? damn

thanks afriman for the clarification

@AfriGuy: Sorry I didnt reply yesterday. The shaping continued to stay at 50/25 for the rest of the day. Wasnt awake long enough to see if it went down. This morning I am on no shaping at 9:00.

Glad to hear there is no shaping - let's hope it's a good day in terms of demand and it can stay that way ;)

Line speed is a factor, that's how we calculate your usage pattern. So if you've used 1 GB in an hour on 1Mbps, that's a lot more aggressive usage than 1GB in one hour on 10Mbps (not sure if this is actually possible, just making the example). So we try to analyse an individual usage profile and shape accordingly. We also use actual time connected to the server, rather than just totals over time, so that we can accurately analyse the patterns of the individual usage.

Sorry about this. Do you have no real time services, or are you referring to downloads being heavily shaped? :(

Streaming services netflix and amazon instant...

It used to play fine, now doesn't even play let alone buffer..

And your call center just doesn't answer

The last week has seen mornings start this way, but there's no reason to think it'll remain. Nor does it need to. I'm not paying for a 24/7 unshaped product; I'd just like it to remain borderline usable during waking hours.

None of my mornings have started with being unshaped over the past 2 weeks until now.

Being shaped again at 25% and 12.5%. But I'm downloading NNTP @ full line speed. Afriman, how accurate / up to date are those shaping indicators? I'm so confused now...

Oh, and sorry for downloading all. Was unexpected.

EDIT : Thought I'd clarify. I read that it's possible to go around shaping using SSL, but I'm not using SSL. I'm downloading on port 119, which I thought is the normal, shaped one. I'm not being shaped, even though clientzone says I should be shaped heavily - 12:5% on P2P. But two days ago I couldn't get 10% on a HTTP download when Downloads were at 25%. I am so utterly confused.

I think that is a rather fair policy! Now its just a matter of sorting out those few that are having problems :)

No shaping according to client zone but crawling along at 15KB/s on a 1Mbs. Was going great 20 mins ago so something has changed.
And there goes another failed download. Before we get the usual congested exchange / faulty line excuse I get full speed on a capped account on the same line and rarely if ever get failed downloads. Indeed, I also never got failed downloads on the brief period I had on uncapped before all the recent problems started. Now around 25% of data downloaded by me is wasted because of downloads failing part way through and having to be re-started.

Id look into a decent download manager ;)

@Afriman, I currently have the following shaping policy in effect: 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P

Please advise how this will affect a TeamViewer session. Is TeamViewer tagged as realtime?

TIA

Just random question, is all this shaping only applicable to the uncapped product? I assume the capped packages do not have this kind of thing? (Still contemplating moving to a 200GB capped package since i know my usage by now).

My usage spiked now with all the new TV series starting (both streaming and downloading) , and i assume alot of other users too. However this would settle again later in the month, which can be a nuisance if you now get shaped around this spike (when total usage most likely won't be that much different).

It shouldnt be effecting the capped products as those are unshaped

...

Clarification, please. Total time connected to which server, doing what? What should I be disconnected from when, to not see daytime shaping I'd view being completely out of whack with my usage patterns?

Also, 25/12.5... yay...

Got a good download manager but not all sites let you resume. I use uploaded a lot but can only resume if I have a premium account with them which I would love to have but not paying for one to download at 15KB/s.

Forgot about that :/ well hopefully an Afri-rep can sort you out :/

Shaping back down to zero on my 4mb. Looking good again.

From my 500kbps speed test last night to a solid 3589kbps now. MUCH better. Now please keep it this way :D
