Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Even with the added IPC, we'd still need to shape downloads so not to impact realtime services.

yes - but you'd shape less - and performance would be better - and your customers wouldn't complain as much.

Ding dong - its 12am - magic time when shaping is eased.
Afrihost shaping does suck but its better than throttling. I think moving from ship to ship will not really pan out in the long run.
For now AH > Mweb (who i will NEVER do business with again). At least there's no throttling.
I've been off http for about 2 years now and really dont want to go back there as its more heavily dmca'd than news.
and im not here to fricken dl the whole interwebz - only a part of it :-)
And AH - there is NO FRICKEN WAY, your leader gets +250gb on a 1mb unless they r not being shaped. anything else is a lie and that is a slippery slope. just see how mwebs threads are doing on this forum. they are dying bcos they lied and used underhanded tactics. Post real dl's on your leaderboard

We don't tamper with the leaderboard, those are the stats that we get.

They could definitely rack up those numbers on 1mb accounts in the previous months when we had no shaping 24 hours a day. Now...not so much. Looking forward to seeing the new leader boards when they are updated with stats which included the past 3 weeks shaping.

But that was 3 weeks ago?? Why are you throwing the AUP in our faces -- you do realise performance has been far below expectation, right?

I understand that some people have been having problems with their realtime services, we are always willing to investigate but we have always stated we shape non-realtime service, nothing has changed in that regard.

So, is that a 'yes' or a 'no'?

We're trying to be as fair as possible regarding the shaping. I can't say whether you should be as satisfied or not. What I can tell you is that we are being as honest as possible with what is happening and trying our best to manage the situation.

We understand that there maybe some downloads that people need urgently, we hoped the Turbocharge feature would help in cases like that. I'd be happy to look at your account regarding the problems you've been having with your realtime protocols.

This is quite a novel Idea let the client pay for a service. then give him 25% of that service. Make him pay again to get back to 100% for a short time. Brilliant business. I am sorry made my mind up off to Telkom I go with my money. Thank you very much too much like Mweb at the moment.

I've said it before, but it clearly bears repeating: your home uncapped offering has changed materially; it is no longer the same product I have happily made use of for the past year. Perhaps 'trying (y)our best' should start including communicating some details regarding what options, if any, you've been discussing over the past 3 weeks, in order for paying clients to make an informed decision as to the worth of remaining such.

Is it Afrihost's intention to return service levels to pre-iOS7 levels by actively acting, and if it is what is being considered to expedite a return to normal? Or have the 'good times' for home uncapped users simply passed, leaving you reliant on your AUP to justify the drop in service levels?

There are 5 free turbocharges made available each month, thereafter a charge is done per turbocharge.
If there are issues under the account we'd really like to look into this for you - please send me a PM and I'll have a look at your account for you.

@afriperson

Suggestion: Can you include a link to network-status in the client-zone?

I'm sure we can have it added.
In the new ClientZone, click on the "request a feature" link - it sends it through to our team :)

We had a sudden increase in demand and as a result have has to shape longer but still according to the AUP. We shape when the network is under pressure. I'm really sorry if we've let you down in anyway. We unshape where and when we can for as long as we can.

Seriously......now we're hiding behind the AUP again. I'm honestly shocked. THE NETWORK HAS BEEN UNDER PRESSURE ALMOST 24/7 for 3 WEEKS!!!!! How is that not a capacity problem?!?!?! Let me offer this as an explanation, sudden is not 3 weeks. Thats a trend.....

trend (trnd)
n.
1. The general direction in which something tends to move.
2. A general tendency or inclination. See Synonyms at tendency.
3. Current style; vogue: the latest trend in fashion.
intr.v. trend·ed, trend·ing, trends
1. To extend, incline, or veer in a specified direction: The prevailing wind trends east-northeast.
2. To show a general tendency; tend: "The gender gap was trending down" (James J. Kilpatrick).
[From Middle English trenden, to revolve, from Old English trendan.]

sud·den (sdn)
adj.
1. Happening without warning; unforeseen: a sudden storm.
2. Characterized by hastiness; abrupt or rash: a sudden decision. See Synonyms at impetuous.
3. Characterized by rapidity; quick and swift.
Idiom:
all of a sudden
Very quickly and unexpectedly; suddenly.
[Middle English sodain, from Old French, from Vulgar Latin *subitnus, from Latin subitneus, from subitus, from past participle of subre, to approach stealthily : sub-, secretly; see sub- + re, to go; see ei- in Indo-European roots.]
sudden·ly adv.
sudden·ness n.

Well no you are not being very honest. We have had, there is nothing wrong spouted for how long, this is temporary, we are working on it, but things are constantly getting worse. HTTP downloads shaped on a Sunday at 17:00, unacceptable. Shaping only easing up after 12pm at night, unnacceptable. I couldn't care less being shaped into the ground 06:00 to 18:00 Monday to Friday. But nothing more than that.

I feel like I'm flogging a dead horse. When I asked what I could expect going forward, or what would be done about a 50% service all I get is the brush off. Turbocharge is great, when it's the exception to the rule instead of a necessity when you need to get anything done. Business uncapped is no solution as some of the other guys can attest.

Afrigirl.....I've just got one question, how long do we wait, how much faith do we still need to have. Because I'm at the end of my tether with this.

Wish there was a like button. My feelings exactly.

I can assure you this is not related to our capacity. As per our PM, please confirm your ADSL details so I can checkup on your account.

Still the same tune... no shred of evidence.
Just bear in mind here... lot of us work in the IT industry, and some of us with networks specifically. Namely, ME.
We can smell BS a mile away, which is being touted right now.

So, let me put it this way. You have a pie (your network) which needs to feed a lot of people (your users).
If you need to chop up the pie into tiny pieces just big enough that everyone gets a taste and not even a bite, you would still maintain that you have "enough" pie for everyone?

Sorry, but I call BS. Tell us the truth, we're not kids here.

I'm no expert here, how does one check at what % certain traffic is being shaped?

Been with Afrihost almost a year now, and never had any issues, but the last +- 2 weeks has been a terrible experience.

yep also in the IT industry.

day 9 of the 24/7 shaping 18.8% http and 6.25% p2p carries on.
Downloading at dialup speeds is awesome.

Go to the new Clientzone, Click on Connectivity.
Then link on your uncapped package.
Next to where it says "100% Realtime speed" It will show if you're shaped or not, and the ratio if you are.

I believe things might get worse before they get better.
