BTW, no offence intended. But we see some whoppers on our side. Had a guy whose router disconnected him everyday at the same time, so weird by product of a power surge. Router just died for a few minutes every day at exactly the same time. Changed routers - 100% normal again :)

None taken :D

Always start with the obvious and work your way down the line with resolution

Yeah...Durbanville been having lots of work done...and there were some great improvements...but not so much yet during peak times...eiya!

Everything with Afrihost was running smoothly until about more or less plus minus give or take (:P) a week ago... It's been a long, hard, tiring week of dealing with YouTube no longer streaming like it used to (or streaming intermittently, which is arguably worse as I've never been a fan of teasing/silly buggers when it comes from people I pay money to) as well as streaming RADIO stations not streaming (or once again streaming intermittently)...

Because Afrihost is so dear to me and has served me so well up until now, I have blamed everyone and everything else for the INTENSELY annoying lack of performance of my 4mbps uncapped account. I've even gone as far as blaming my sister for installing the KickAssTorrents app on her tablet and have switched the entire device off in frustration numerous times (nearly causing a massive family fued in the process)... I have blamed every piece of software and every device with a network adapter in it for the issues I have been experiencing. I have even slapped our old VCR around and unplugged it just to be ABSOLUTELY certain that it's not a problem on my end (joke). I nearly went as far as blaming my poor, loyal mixed breed dog who is chilling in the back garden, but I thought I should just quickly pay MyBB a visit before I go to such extremes... Needless to say, after visiting this particular thread, I was sorely disappointed to discover that my favourite ISP was to blame for the aforementioned issues. I now have to go around apologising to every family member (as well as the poor defenseless VCR) who I have offended in my efforts to stop this tragic meltdown of my interwebs.

As I sit typing this now, the music which I am so desperately trying to stream from my beloved radio station in France sounds like this ----> (♫♫♫♫♫♫♫ [Deathly silence] ♫♫♫♫♫♫♫ [Deathly silence] ♫♫♫♫♫♫♫ [Deathly silence] ♫♫♫♫♫♫♫ [Deathly silence] ♫♫♫♫♫♫♫ [Deathly silence] ♫♫♫♫♫♫♫ [Deathly silence]) Needless to say, I am ready to kill. But I digress...

Instead of sitting here and demanding 'better service or else I'll leave'... I am going to make Afrihost a once in a lifetime offer. Seeing as your profit margins are clearly not high enough for you to supply a reasonable service, I am offering to pay you MORE money. Yep, MORE MONEY, from the little guy at the bottom (Who would have thought hey)... I think I can manage an extra 50 bucks a month more for the return of my account's previously acceptable performance (and my sanity)... What do you say AfriMan? Is it a deal? Maybe clear it with Mr. Smiley first (Gian), before you commit to anything? I wouldn't want anyone to get into trouble...

Oh, and I've been through 40GB so far this month (Not too much I'd say) and according to the Client Zone, no shaping policies are being applied to my account...

SO, Mister AfriMan, DEAL or NO DEAL? Wat se jy my bra?

Okay, every time I state YouTube is slow, is when I'm on a mobile device. Is there a possibility that YouTube traffic to mobile devices / apps can be shaped? I use the stock YouTube android app, but it's basically unusable. YouTube works as expected on PC.

OK, you're on the Uncapped thread, so that's why I'm assuming you mean Uncapped DSL. For mobile, it depends on the throughput you're getting in that specific area according to signal / coverage, etc.

Mobile Data is prone to spikes in latency, on all networks that I've tested, so it doesn't have the stability of DSL performance. Latency will have a huge effect on realtime streaming, so if your throughput is already impacted, it's possible that your experience could be less than great.

Need more data to comment further though :(

Sorry, I should be clearer. I am watching on various android devices, connected through the wifi, running on the afrihost uncapped account. 2mbps uncapped.

Should have been clearer.

It's definitely not a question of having no money for upgrades. If it were that simple, believe me, this would have been sorted out ASAP with no questions asked. Purchasing capacity is a long term issue - we're talking weeks or months. Proposals and documents need to be prepared, Telkom has to order parts from overseas, there is testing and major overhauls to the network hardware and we have to update our software management tools. There is no quick fix, spit and tape solution.

I totally understand how that may not be of any comfort to anyone reading this feeling like they're getting less than what they expect and have become used to over the last year. What I can say is, we won't leave you hanging. When we moved over to MTN and found that we hadn't ordered enough capacity, we admitted it, we ordered it, and delivered mostly on time. From then we've given our clients full run on the network to enjoy a largely minimally shaped (or not at all) experience - far more than if we had done structured shaping as our competitors have. So we hope that our clients feel that we under-promised but over-delivered in the end.

I'm confident that when the dust settles, we'll swing this heavily back in our clients favour and this period of struggle will be dwarfed by the awesomeness we'll serve up to our clients. We just ask that you hang on a little longer while our plans take shape and hopefully we'll be able to tell you more when we know it's all confirmed :)

Okay AfriMan... Patient I shall be... I believe you guys will ensure the awesomeness flows in due course... Thank you for the prompt reply and have a shweet evening :-)

Yep, same here. Hulu is better but not what it used/should be on a 10mb line (CPT).

Mine is a bit better now, earlier and last night it was getting interrupted at 240p every 30 seconds or so. It streams OK at very low resolutions currently, still not acceptable for a 10mbps line IMO.

Any timeline on when you might be making this announcement?

Mine is back up to scratch this am but streaming is definitely being affected at times by AHs problems. Their support and even the accounts department seems to be in shambles. For me I attribute some of the problems to the launch of their mobile offering and the business is simply not geared to cope. They are really putting their good reputation at risk if you ask me and in the mean time expecting us to pay for a service we aren't receiving...

just a question about shaping.....

when it says "Downloads 18%" in the clienzone does it mean that the line is shaped to 18% of its normal capacity? or does it mean that the line is shaped by 18% thus leaving 82% capacity?

It means that you have 18% of your line speed available for P2P/ Downloads - whichever percentage it's allocated to. This only takes place during shaping periods though.

what are the specs of the afrihost news server (retention/connections)?

was getting 700kbps last night on 3 connections last night. 10Mb uncapped. 75/75 shaping.

[rant]
free capped account speedtest on average about 4 times faster than uncapped account speedtest.

youtube unwatchable on uncapped, even at 240p. youutbe watchable on capped, but only at 720p and only just (brief bueffering every 30s or so).

my capped account routinely performs better than my uncapped account with respect to realtime services (streaming).

i seriously hope AH can sort this out. this is my first month with AH and i am thinking of going back to MWEB, where i was never throttled, and never shaped. not even once that i noticed. my average usage with them was 300GB/month.

here i got shaped heavily, despite not having downloaded a single p2p, nzb, patch, http download in the entire month! the other day i was at 12/6, or whatever the exact numbers are.
[/rant]

and these turbocharges - how many do i get? how long do they last?

Our news server does 5 connections max, and our retention is 200 days.

Your get 5 Free turbocharges every month, and thereafter you top up at R29 per topup, which includes different number of sessions depending on your Uncapped speed.

We're sorry that you're experience on Uncapped is not as good as it could be. We have some plans in motion to get everything up and running as smoothly as it has been all year, we definitely won't leave our clients hanging :)
