I for one wouldn't mind being bumped to 2mb for the price of 1mb like Axxess is going to do.

Although it does all depend on whether Axxess will keep those prices permanent or bump them after in January. In which case I see how it makes sense for AH not to. Though I'd still be interested how the upgrades will affect uncapped accounts in terms of benefit.

Of course it's all moot until this shaping issue is sorted. Right now I'd just like to get back to normal. This makes me a sad panda :(

We don't like the complications of time based promotions. Although we have done so for Mobile Data, we much prefer offering special prices that you keep for life (or that just keep dropping). We are reviewing what will happen when Telkom does the upgrades, but we're waiting for final confirmation on how they will structure the upgrades for wholesalers like ISPs. We usually go in favour of our clients, so I'm sure we'll work out something awesome when the time comes, but for now we're being a little more cautious :)
 
lets hope for competitive pricing, such a pity that my crappy exchange only supports 4mb :( so i will have to stay on 4mb (hopefully for a cheaper price)

It looks like there is a controller or something that's gone funny - cos none of the Telkom portal tests can see your line and I get an error. So I don't really know what your line is synced at :(

At the end of the day, if everyone uses more bandwidth it really works out best for all involved - so we're definitely keen to give the very best deal to our clients :)

Thanks Afri. When I log into my modem I can see the downlink is set at 4095 - if that helps. Thank you for the assistance. There is definitely something screwy here somewhere on the Telkom hardware side of things...
 
Much rather prefer that the pricing model is kept where it's at and the extra money is put into more capacity etc which will yield a better service which will in turn keep customers happy. Have no problem paying for an awesome service :D

same here i heard that because afrihost dropped its prices there are more capped users they are failing to keep up with the demand
so basically down hill for the uncapped users who have been with them since the beginning
slow speeds and shaping we accept during the day not at 4 am in the morning

I don't think this is the case at all. I do a lot of monitoring on my own in terms of bandwidth usage and how our IPCs perform and I honestly did not see the massive upturn in demand coming - definitely not to the degree we've seen. And a lot more people at MTN and Afrihost were equally surprised, so I genuinely think it was impossible to have predicted. I promise that plans were immediately put into motion and every short term option was put in place while we waited for long term options to become available to us.

If it were just a question of spending more money to provide a better service, we would definitely have done that - but some solutions take planning and a long turnaround and we have to wait for those to be realised before we can implement them. We've never aimed to be a cheap and nasty service - we've always aimed to deliver an awesome experience - whether it's service, price or product - and that will continue to be our aim and the cornerstone of our brand.

I'm testing from the exchange - so it should give some indication. I think most likely there is a hardware issue that's not responding properly :(
 
So, I've got fed up with MWeb and returned to Afrihost after a 2 year absence.

Signed up for a 4Meg Uncapped account on the 24th. Registration was smooth and simple.
First few days were pretty good, no complaints. Speedtest.net was a bit erratic though. I was getting anywhere between 1 and 3.5 Megs to the same local server within minutes of each other. On MWeb, I was getting a very consistent 4meg+.
P2P traffic was excellent, much better than MWeb.

Then yesterday, the wheels came off: Browsing, P2P, everything just ground to a halt. I was getting around 20kb/s. I thought maybe it was the wet weather (I live in Jo'burg West) but when I switched over to my MWeb account, it was running just fine.
I checked the Network Status on Afrihost and the forum for indications if others had the same problem but nothing seemed to indicate it was a wider problem.

Have I swapped one set of problems for another?!

And I run my modem bridged, as having two NATs up is a waste. Also I like being able to just swap out my router and leave the modem as is. Makes it easier to upgrade to newer wireless tech in routers AC+ etc.

And for the topic of this discussion a router on it's own cannot connect to the internet. You connect through an ADSL modem. I don't have a dual device that incorporates a modem/router in one.

I also prefer it this way. Once tried a Adsl router, but after a day or 2 the net slows down then I have to restart the router to get it up to speed again. With my 1 port billion Dsl modem and RB750 to handle Q tree rules I could not be happier. Obviously have to connect a wifi router to the RB750, but even from Modem > RB750 > Wifi there is no delay at all.
 
So I can cancelling upcapped now and going for 50gb capped - cannot use more than that on uncaped now anyway.

Last night when I went to bed, I had a 300mb file that was on 76%. Now it is on 97%. Which means in the last 12 hours, it did 60mb.

I'm not sure if you account was showing any shaping - but that should not have affected your realtime browsing, so it sounds like there may be other issues at play here.

I'll need to get some more details from you and see if we can figure out what might be happening.

Sorry that you've had such a poor experience after re-joining us - let's see what we can do to turn this around :(

When we hit peak usage, we see latency. We've set our shaper to react more quickly and more aggressively to demand, but there is unfortunately a few minutes when it tried to find the "sweetspot" to shape as few clients as possible that latency does spike.

Latencies should be back to normal now :)
