The reason shaping is being seen implemented a bit more aggressively is due to an increase in demand on our network. While we almost have certainly signed up new clients to our ADSL network we have enough capacity to cover this.
Shaping is there to protect the network again congestion, so P2P and non-realtime services are being shaped to ensure realtime services are left unshaped :)

A lot of people seem unable to understand that multiple different points of capacity is at question - IPConnect capacity, International backhaul capacity, national backhaul capacity, capacity at exchanges and so on. The fact that ADSL is a best effort contended service means that its a constant balancing act. What has been denied is that the product is oversold which considering the ADSL regulations is not a false statement.

Other than investing in homing pigeons and taking the lead on IPoAC offerings I don't really see what is expected beyond continuing to find ways to deliver awesomeness.
 
Now that Telkom and Axxess has announced their line upgrades, when do you think afrihost's respond?

I don't think it is up to the customer to figure out what capacity are being referred to. But like i said I already canceled so I don't care any more about any of AH capacity issues.

It isn't for the customer to figure out or care - but if you are going to allege that the product is oversold or anything of that nature you need to at least have a basic understanding of the core nature of ADSL

I very well understand the product of ADSL, but as a very very very low end user I feel it is not fair to be punished to 12.5% shaping so that is why i canceled

Oversell: sell more of (something) than exists or can be delivered.

Their client base is trying to use more bandwidth than is available...

They did it to the point where accounts are now shaped 12+ hours a day, I'd call that overselling.

Please can someone get to the bottom of this!!! Seriously! I love Afrihost, best service ever! But now I'm asking you guys to step up and prove it here! ;)

The uncapped approach of Afrihost certainly has its drawbacks and the low usage customers can probably get value primarily by using the capped offerings. I do have very real fears about how VDSL is going to pan on the market. The wonderful thing though with a proper functioning industry is the ability for customers to shop around and build up. However I don't think that the description of a shaping extent as "punishment" is apt at all. Afrihost uncapped is really a form of a voluntarily entered socialized pool of people have a set of sharing rules that ensures that basic web usage is possible all the time.

I feel I have been very social for a very long time by basically subsidising their uncapped offering (It would have been far cheaper for me to go capped). But it pisses me of when i need a download quickly by being shaped for downloads to 12.5% seeing that I hardly use 20/30 GB a month on a 10 GB package. That is enough of being social and supporting other users. Afrihost policy currently sucks for me and many other low end users, but they need their low end users to make it a sustainable product, but treating their low end customers like f....... **** is not helping them. End of november I am finished with them. November I will try to go all out and download **** and watch youtube **** I don't really need. just to piss them off. I have a spare pc which i just going to play youtube on all day. Just fort the f...... sake of it.

I should never have voted for them as ISP of the year, for some reason they trick people just before the myadsl votes. Next year they will not get my vote

First random youtube i stared to watch for no reason at all

Running about 4 youtubes videos at the moment (edit make it 6) 10 and all videos are running fine upto 12 and still running fine, I guess thats is how afrihost wants me to run my account

That is what they want us todo, well I will be a record holder watching youtube in november, seeing I can't download important files I might as well watch silly youtubes as they are not shaped at least I will be averaging more as 20GB a month on a 10Mb line

Got about 25 videos running now, but can't get a proper download

Anyone looking for some long videos, search for science on youtube

Apparently Telkom are coming to increase the bandwidth on my exchange.

Do you think that could be the problem?

Some days I get a beautifull 8.5 mbps... otherdays (as for the last few now) I get these results

Yep, that's exchange congestion.

It'll only happen when lots of people in your area is using a lot of bandwidth hence why it is intermittent.
