I seriously hope Afrihost is getting their additional capacity online soon and that shaping is again the exception and not the norm afterwards. I pay extra for my 10Mbps line compared to other ISP's and except maybe 3 hours a night I sit with 12.5%/6.25% shaping every single day and this is going on since November now. If this continues beyond February I'm switching

Hows the shaping? What DNS service are you using :)
Apart from Netflix I haven't noticed that much of a difference. I don't do any P2P or newsservers or any other downloads. Just browsing, PSN and Netflix. Using Unlocator and it seems to work fine so far :D

Get a business account or go back to capped until they have their upgraded IPC.
Yeah that sounds crappy. I would prefer not to go back to capped since Netflix and PSN requires quite a bit of cap (them free games!) and the business accounts are quite a bit more. Perhaps Mweb will perform better, might as well give them a shot.

EDIT: Ha! Just after posting this I thought I would check... Shaped. And there I was led to believe that CPT was not being shaped. Gullible bastard.

Yea, they have increased the shaping down in the cape for a while as the new businesses have come in to play - however this should disappear as soon as the new capacity comes in. Why dont you try a trial with Unotelly, AH clients have had good comments about them :)

If I'm not mistaken, using a different DNS service will not make a difference to my streaming since it is only responsible for lookups. Unless you mean I should use their (Unotelly) VPN service. Urgh... So many bloody hoops to jump through. Think I'll just go Mweb.

It would change the route to the destination, therefore changing the way the shaping system see's the data.

Why don't you pm Afriguy or Afriman, they'll help you out with the issue.

Cool, will try a free trial on Unotelly, but I'm willing to bet good money that it won't solve the issue. Everything was working 100% before moving to uncapped :(

Will do that, but I'm not expecting miracles. The responses are almost all the same :D Already logged a ticket, but their support these days have yet to impress me.

Remember, uncapped accounts have a shaping system. This system is designed to not shape any steaming services (including, although unofficially, Netflix).

So it is possible that using the right path, netflix should be unshaped :)

I find it strange though that my Business account buffers on streaming, where as the 1 gig free acc runs at full speed.

This is weird? They are pretty much the same in terms of unshaped(ness) :D Please would you check 2 things for me:

Is protocol prioritization off in clientzone?
Are you changing the connections in clientzone or via a windows pppoe connection?

Cool, will test that tonight with the Unotelly trial :) If this works then I will eat your hat.

I quote verbatim:
It seems that something has gone wrong.
However I have recreated your DSL ports at the Telkom exchange.

Please reboot your modem and test again.

Well that made no difference. The shaping was reduced to 50% though, but that made no difference to Netflix.

I have asked them to tell me if I will be shaped (part of that shaping policy) going forward. I think I will be.

EDIT: I also tested with my FNB Capped account, and things are flying! Just didn't have time to run a Hulu test as well. Hulu struggles a lot with buffering on Afrihost Uncapped. Not worth watching.

Does anyone else have a drop in download speed and increase in Ping in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, my 2mbs line is only dowloading at 60kbs and ping has increased from 11ms to 460ms.

The last 2 nights I have been shaped to pieces on Afrihost, but I'm in Northern Suburbs.

No problems when I switch to a capped account. Waiting for some test results on Mweb.

I am getting the same thing in East London, pings to CT and Durban are around 700 and downloads are very slow. Happening on both uncapped and capped.

South Region IPC
Medium Impact
Opened: 08:28 Tue, January 21, 2014
We’re currently experiencing a reduction in IPC capacity affecting the Southern Region (Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and surrounding areas). Our network engineers are on site and working on the issue to resolve this as quickly as possible. Affected clients could experience reduced throughput and higher latency than normal on the DSL connection. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and hope to normalise services as quickly as possible

Morning all

Looks like we've lost a small piece of our South IPC. This may cause clients in the region to experience slow throughput and high latency.

We also need to redirect some traffic while we work on the IPC with Telkom. Sorry for the inconvenience. I'll post updates as I get them from our team working on this.

I'm in Pretoria. International is quite slow on my 10Mb uncapped. Only getting 2.4Mb ... Was hoping for something around 5Mb at least ...

Are there any way to improve this?
