I'm in Pretoria. International is quite slow on my 10Mb uncapped. Only getting 2.4Mb ... Was hoping for something around 5Mb at least ...

Are there any way to improve this?

Some traffic may be redirected to the North while we work on the IPC (or rather Telkom's engineer works on the IPC - we're not allowed to touch their stuff). He is onsite and busy with this right now.

We're hoping for a quick turnaround :)

Used 4MB capped Afrihost for the first half of the month and Netflix was doing great. However after switching to 4MB uncapped the quality has deteriorated dramatically.

testmy.net shows massive variance (between 1mpbs and 2mbps), while speedtest.net (which I'm assuming is just local) works relatively well peaking at about 3.47mpbs.

Any suggestions on how to improve the streaming?

Sounds like you may not getting good international throughput. While we do believe that we don't have any problems on our overseas links, contention on the network (especially in the north) could be showing some issues like this.

I think we'll need to upgrade our IPC to completely eliminate this as a possibility - hopefully that will happen very soon.

I seriously hope Afrihost is getting their additional capacity online soon and that shaping is again the exception and not the norm afterwards. I pay extra for my 10Mbps line compared to other ISP's and except maybe 3 hours a night I sit with 12.5%/6.25% shaping every single day and this is going on since November now. If this continues beyond February I'm switching

We don't have a confirmed ETA on this at the moment, but I am very hopeful that we won't wait much longer. I'm also confident that once our new capacity lands we'll go back to the awesome experience we've been having for a long time.

Apart from Netflix I haven't noticed that much of a difference. I don't do any P2P or newsservers or any other downloads. Just browsing, PSN and Netflix. Using Unlocator and it seems to work fine so far :D

Yeah that sounds crappy. I would prefer not to go back to capped since Netflix and PSN requires quite a bit of cap (them free games!) and the business accounts are quite a bit more. Perhaps Mweb will perform better, might as well give them a shot.

EDIT: Ha! Just after posting this I thought I would check... Shaped. And there I was led to believe that CPT was not being shaped. Gullible bastard.

Sorry if I gave the impression that CT was never shaped, it is definitely seeing shaping since we came back from the December break. But we've ordered more capacity nationally, not just for the North, so we should see a big change. I doubt that all the capacity will go live at the same time, but hopefully within a short time of each other so we can all enjoy an awesome experience :)

If I'm not mistaken, using a different DNS service will not make a difference to my streaming since it is only responsible for lookups. Unless you mean I should use their (Unotelly) VPN service. Urgh... So many bloody hoops to jump through. Think I'll just go Mweb.

DNS literally controls everything, so changing DNS servers will have huge effect on speeds and latency. It's how quickly those lookups occur that has a huge influence on speeds.

Hi AfriMan. Any chance you could give us some more details about this extra capacity?

DNS servers should be running as normal and unaffected :)

Are you getting no results from ping?
I can ping the dns servers ok but can't browse at all unless I change to google dns so something seems to be up with it. Tried restarting router several times but still the same.

Cool, will try a free trial on Unotelly, but I'm willing to bet good money that it won't solve the issue. Everything was working 100% before moving to uncapped :(

Will do that, but I'm not expecting miracles. The responses are almost all the same :D Already logged a ticket, but their support these days have yet to impress me.

Sorry that our support is not delivering on our promise. I promise our guys are doing their best. For the moment we still training new staff and deploying them as quickly as we can :(

Okie dokie, will try Unotelly. You recommend them rather then Elephant or Unlocator?

For browsing this makes sense yes, but once the lookup has been done then no more issues, right?

Well that's why we have MyBB :D I actually know somebody that works for Afrihost Support :D

EDIT: Oh yeah, and the IPC could account for all the problems we are seeing. I only found out about this from you a short while a go.

I find it strange though that my Business account buffers on streaming, where as the 1 gig free acc runs at full speed.

It may be that you're establishing a new connection which run at full speed before congestion or contention sets in and brings speeds down. How long are you testing for?

As far as I understand it, slow DNS servers will make overall internet surfing slow :(

Does anyone else have a drop in download speed and increase in Ping in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, my 2mbs line is only dowloading at 60kbs and ping has increased from 11ms to 460ms.

Most probably related to the IPC issue in Cape Town at the moment. It looks like we're nearly out of the woods now :)
