Afriman / Afriguy,
Is there a reason why daytime Netflix would struggle a bit? On a 10mbps Home Uncapped account at the moment, speedtests look good (8.2mbps, 240ms). But Netflix isn't streaming HD - it tries to buffer HD, but then just reverts back to SD all the time. Looking at my bandwidth monitor, the usage doesn't exceed 3.5mbps (it doesn't even try to spike above that).
It's a bit weird.. have any theories?
My traceroutes are all normal, too.

Well I might be tempting fate here...but since it's been a good couple of months since I've posted here (at least one I know) I can happily report that everything has been running like a beaut.

Also thank you to Afrihost for having that nice prompt in the clientzone for me to downgrade my line to a 4mb. Finally can take that R100 saving :)

Once telkom ups my DP, I might move on to 10mb.

Keep up the great work!

Hi AfriGuy,

something seems broken in Cape Town still....my line checks out with the diagnostics but the ping seems to be very erratic.

Throughput is fine (8.55mbps download, 0.68mbps upload) but the ping is fluctuating between 400 and 800ms.

I also set a rolling ping to www.google.com and it seems to be good for 30sec to 1min at a time (sitting at 169ms) and then it starts spiking between 400 and 800 for 20sec or so.

I noticed this happening starting last night and today.

Heya

This is a bit odd. Are the issues tied to time directly or more towards your shaping?

Hey FalconZA

The issues in CPT have definitely been sorted, would you mind pasting a traceroute here so we can see where the latency is being introduced?

No shaping applied at the time of testing. Last night Netflix did stream HD (tested at about 11pm), but even so it didn't want to stream SuperHD. Just normal HD.
Daytime = no HD at all.

Not looking too bad here, some inconsistent latency on the exchange but nothing that I can see causing the 700ms+ latency :( Drop me a PM with another traceroute when you notice the latency go south please :)

Odd, are you seeing shaping during the day?
Maybe some of the guys who have Netflix setup can share some of their wisdom on getting it running silky smooth?

No, like I said, no shaping during any of the tests.
Netflix usually runs silky smooth for me anyway during the evenings - not SuperHD smooth, but better than daytime's SD. So I highly doubt it's a setup issue on my side :)

Do other streaming sites like YouTube/ Vimeo perform OK?

Streaming in general isn't fantastic no. Both during the evenings and daytime, but with daytime further behind in performance than the evenings.
One thing I noticed is that with TI (for instance), on a bandwidth monitor you can see an almost constant bitrate of bandwidth being used as it buffers, whereas with AH it spikes up and down the whole time. Also it never spikes above about 3.5mbps, and it needs to spike to at least 7mbps in order to buffer the SuperHD content.

Hi

I'm a bit out of touch of what's happened in the last 2 months. Is the new IPC that was supposed to come around now installed?

I'd like to get our team to test this with you, probably with one of our Capped accounts to document the findings and make changes where necessary.
Could you PM me this detail and your account info so I can have it passed on?

We already saw provisional capacity going live late last year, we're just waiting for the rest now. Not ETA just yet though :(
