Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Good day Afrihost forum! I just flipped my lid and cancelled my Telkom Internet uncapped account and I need to find another ISP quickly. Seems like AH is doing well at the moment. Any comments from users? I watch loads of Netflix, some PTP and loads of Youtube. Average usage is around 200Gb per month on a 4mbps account.

We've got quite a few clients using Netflix and the like, there are some good tricks of the trade around these parts. We can't officially recommend anything though :(

You'll fit right in with that usage!

ever since i moved to uncapped Hulu constanly buffers. i moved from a 100Gig capped 20mbps to uncapped 10mbps and the guy on the phone said that Afrihost doesn't shape streaming services so i thought that 20mbps is a bit of overkill for streaming.

but ever since i moved to uncapped 10mbps hulu buffers every 5min... it's annoying. 10mbps should be more than enough to stream on hulu.

what is going on?

shaping

i was told from afrihost over the phone that they don't shape streaming services, that's why i made the switch.

They're referring to youtube when they say that.

Evidence speaks otherwise does it not?

EDIT: Also, it depends which region you in as the load will be different, therefore different shaping.

Then how badly am i being shaped if not even 10mbps is enough for Hulu. what about the guys with 4mbps lines they must be going insane.

don't get me wrong... Afrihost is awesome. their support is awesome. i'm just fustrated that i'm being shaped to a point that not even 10mbps is enough to watch anything on Hulu.

who are you with and how's their shaping policy?

I'm with Plugg. They use the star rating policy, which I like, because that doesn't punish me when I've been a good boy. I work during the day so don't use it much, but the times I have been home, I don't have any issues with browsing etc. I don't hulu, only netflix, and that plays SD fine during the day (if I really want to) and HD after 5pm (4mb), but being a "home" account, this will affect your rating.

Different strokes for different folks :)

Craigavon, Fourways, Gauteng.

Northern region is having the highest load at the moment, then south, then east AFAIK.

Things will get better when their capacity arrives.

I'm sure you won't have long to wait, but you know what they say about assumptions.

Hulu is prone to buffer, im shaped to hell on my 2mbps line and i watch hulu fine.

Does anyone know if there is any new news about the bandwidth upgrades? The reason i am now getting regarding my poor connectivity (after months of troubleshooting, new router, cables, machine, etc) is that AH is waiting new network upgrades to improve connectivity. In 4 months my link averaged speeds of up to 60K with the last weekend, getting full line speeds, and back to a crappy connection from Sunday night. Frustrating.

We don't shape streaming services at all. Hulu, as a known service, would definitely not be shaped. Some other services may have a P2P signature, but that would not apply here :(

Any streaming service - Hulu, YouTube, Netflix or anything that is audio or video streaming is not shaped. This is regardless of region, because we have the same overall shaping policies. The extent of shaping may differ, based on regional demand, but the policies applied do not.

I'm considering Afrihost now and this does not sound good!

Please also bear in mind that we are aware that in North the demand is extremely high. We are managing our resources as best we can until we receive the significant upgrade we ordered from Telkom last year. When that arrives we'll be able to shape a lot less than we currently do :(
