Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Day 1 Not a good start at all. YouTube buffering on 480, BBC Iplayer constant buffering, Netflix getting nothing better than SD. Still have to test p2p, just feeling too disappointed right now :-(

Sorry to hear that. This seems a little out of sync with the general results we're seeing at the moment. Throughput should be great on realtime services. Have you run any diagnostics, like using our Network Test App?

No shaping according to client zone... I use around 200gb pm, but seeing as this is day one for me on AH, and I can't use streaming I am worried that I made the right call here

If there is no shaping, it means there is less traffic on the network and we're not seeing high contention. Very odd that you're getting these results :(

You are lucky it seems, this is how mine has looked for 27 days in a row now, 24/7. I have looked 2 o' clock in the morning, the whole of weekends. Whats the point of scheduling downloads at night if its constantly shaped? I'm basically paying R597 for a dial-up connection. Pathetic!

You should never be shaped 24 hours a day for that length of time. This is definitely a bit strange.

Can you drop me a PM? I'll have a look at your shaping history and see why your profile isn't changing dynamically as it should :(

No I didn't, but my Web Africa trial account as well as an Mweb 4mbps account both ran flawlessly leading me to believe that the problem is on AH side.

Popped in to ask AH clients a quick question or few - please help me if you would ....

How's the daytime shaping on AH Gold 4 Mbps, whats the torrent shaping like, and how does streaming work for you.
Last question, hows the tech support in your opinion?

Many thanks for your help. :)

I'll let the rest of the guys answer from their own experience. But just to let you know that we never shape streaming or other realtime servers at any time of the day, so you always have access to your full line for priority services.

We are working very hard on making our support the very best. We're actively recruiting and training to do this. I do believe that we have a really fantastic team :)

Like I said, if there was an issue on the network, we'd see this across the board, so if one client (or a few clients) are experiencing certain issues but it's not the for all clients on the network, we have to troubleshoot from basics to ensure that we don't miss any obvious issues :(

I agree with your logic, but I'm confident that my line is 100%

Hi guys, I've recently moved from 10mb uncapped to a 4mb uncapped (lots of issues with stability and speed in my area).... is it normal to be throttled at this rate with only 44gb used this month?

Data Statistics
Data Used: 44.48 GB
Average Daily Usage: 1.59 GB
Projected Monthly Usage: 49.25 GB

Account Overview
Account Status: Account Active
Shaping Policy: 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P

Dude! You keep saying that but several people including myself has TOLD YOU OVER AND OVER AGAIN THAT STREAMING IS CRAP

Stop denying your problem and just fix it ffs!!!!

Don't believe him. Several people including me on this forum (I joined for this reason alone) complained about Netflix and streaming services being total crap from January (previously no issue)

They keep saying "if there was a problem then we'd see it across the board", I'm willing to bet many people don't bother complaining! Cancel your account immediately because this has gone on long enough.

THEY JUST DENY DENY DENY

Yes, we're seeing some heavy demand, especially in the North. Remember this is shaping, not throttling - it only affects non-realtime services like torrents. Unshaped services will continue to get full line speed as normal.

I didn't ask which region you're in. Heavy demand is mostly in the North (Gauteng) region.

I can see you're upset about this and I totally understand.

But as I mentioned, you are mentioning several people, which is less than a percent of our full client base on DSL. We have many reports from clients and staff that Netflix is working well for them. So we have to investigate and troubleshoot the reports becuase if it works for several hundred or thousand clients, it simply cannot be an issue on the network.

Those are the exact same results I'm seeing on my account as well. I'm in Brackenfell, Western Cape. And no, I don't ever torrent, but my Netflix goes for a ball of crap. If this is not throttling, then I don't know what is.

When you have a moment, could you please assist me via PM? I already sent you one.

Again, we haven't made any routing changes to the network, so there is nothing different on our side. I'm happy to do some troubleshooting and diagnostics from our side, but it also makes a big difference which DNS provider you are using for Netflix, which has been demonstrated a few times in this thread and others.

Awesome, I will do so :)

We have clients in the North, even with maximum shaping and some contention still getting decent Netflix service. In the Cape, there should be no reason for realtime services to be affected becuase there is much less shaping and very little contention. We need to get more data and tests to determine where the issue is and whether it is something we can fix from this end.

Are they all on business accounts perhaps? The normal uncapped is definitely buggered on my side as well when it comes to Netflix. So yes, there's quite a few of us.

Is it not possible that Netflix is being seen as P2P or as a Download? Since those are the things that are shaped/throttled into the ground.

If every single Netflix user reported this, I would say it's possible. But some people using Normal Uncapped accounts are reporting normal service, so it pretty much rules that out. We've tested it on the most aggressive shaping policy on a solid 10Mbps line and we're seeing very normal performance. So, I really need more specific data to be able to draw any conclusions on this :(

Thanks, yep... north gauteng. Perhaps I should consider moving.

Oh, I also notice issues with streaming.

Well shaping never affected my Netflix before (didn't have shaping active when I used Netflix in the past month), but I did notice that Netflix isn't using all available bandwidth on the line. Which means that HD only rarely happens, and SuperHD never happens (on a 10mbps line). Have eliminated the problem being on my end, as I tested when exchange congestion restabilised (2am etc) and traceroutes looked normal.

Will conduct further tests and send the results to Kyle, but just a heads-up: something is amiss.
