I think Afrihost is definitely having capacity issues at the moment. This is the first time in the 3 months since starting with them that my account has been shaped for more than 24 hours.
Not that I mind at the moment as my real time services are running as expected, but it does seem that the network could be taking strain at the moment. My usage is lower than the previous months as well up to this point.

Firstly, "shaping" or "throttling", whatever - it's really just marketing semantics with the same effective result.

Secondly, you had a long period where you were shaping/throttling, or whatever you called it, all Cape IPC users to less than 50% every evening with some long story about different usage profiles in different areas. And then it just suddenly stopped for a few months and everything was reasonable. Now we seem to be back to the regular evening slow downs. I find it very frustrating that either you have no clue what is going on, or you do, but always make out that is something unique to the user. 40GB in half a month on a 4mbps uncapped account is not unreasonable, so why am I shaped/throttled/capped, whatever?

Thirdly, you claim that the shaping is only on downloads and P2P. It isn't, or you have capacity issues again - certainly yesterday evening everything was running at max half rate.

It sounds like your experiences isn't the best, and that doesn't work for us. Please PM me and we'll have this sorted for you.
Just to touch on a few things around shaping vs throttling - they're very different ways of managing traffic on a network. Throttling will dictate that when you reach x GB your entire connection will be slowed down, whereas shaping (and the way we implement it) looks at your usage vs the regions IPC throughput at any current time and shapes the non-essential protocols.

We most certainly don't have capacity restraints, however it could very well be that your area has become internet hungry over the select times :)

As I said, please drop me a PM with your account info and we'll take a look at your account, thoroughly. We want you to have the best possible internet experience with us.

Is it possible to pause my account for a month or two in which I don't pay?

Also, will I be able to cancel my account during this period, if needed?

Question re: shaping. We're currently being shaped to 75% of our line speed. Will this be the case for the rest of the month or?

Might be until your monthly projection is under the shaping limit.
Remember Afrihost takes your total/days*30 to get your projected total.

Yes. There's a pause button on the account details.

Just tested it out now, can't seem to replicate the error :(
How many connections do you have setup?

Yeah, definitely something wrong. The same article that worked fine this morning, is stuck at 10KB/s now.

AfriMan/guy/girl anything you can do to help with a congested exchange?

We can do our best if your line is with us. We'll have a fault logged with Telkom and escalate as much as we possibly can. Unfortunately it's still up to Telkom as to when they will resolve the fault though :(

When I had congestion (due to stolen cables), a Telkom rep pleaded with me to be patient, they are always busy with upgrades. Unfortunately at the moment with the MSAN upgrades and cable theft they're pretty busy as it is.

My first night with Afrihost and I am so happy.

Cancelled my MWEB this morning, while I was on the phone with them I made a few clicks and got a 1meg uncapped Afrihost account. Used Teamviewer and dropped the new details into my router, and downloads started up immediately. Decided at the close of business to upgrade to 2 meg. Phone Telkom and while the lady was processing the order I upgraded my Afrihost account with a few clicks.
An hour later I get home and my line is at 2megs and so is my account. Ran Speedtest and Pingtest and couldn't be happier.

Just signed up with Afrihost after leaving some other horrible ISP that now decided to start
throttling. Downloading has been better than ever before, why didn't I change sooner? :D
