Morning.

No I have not. I phoned Telkom and they confirmed that maintenance and upgrades are being done to the exchange and dslams in my area due to the faults logged regarding slow speeds. Also confirmed this via the line. So I will just have to patiently wait for their upgrades and repairs to be completed.

Thank you for the check up +1.

Awesome. Let us know how this goes. Telkom should have it sorted out quickly :)

You're in Durbanville, right? How many upgrades does that make it in the last 12 months? 4?

More I think. They did the major upgrades to the big exchanges in some neighborhoods first. Now they going around sorting out all the other smaller dslams I think...or I hope.

The network notice has been closed and set as resolved for the outage in my area. My modem at home is currently off, but the line test app is also not reporting any connection to the exchange. I don't know if my modem needs to be on for that part of the line test to work.

Anyway. No hassles for now. Will check it again a bit later and give Tellkom another ring and ask what's what.

How does one know if they're throttled on AH? I don't see any indication in the Client Zone, having some weird issues. I suspect it's my router as I've had weird crap with this one for a while now but just wanna make sure.

Should be getting a Linksys WRT54GL with Tomato/DD-WRT soon, can't wait to ditch this Telkom Netgear POS!

They don't throttle, only shape. Go to the client zone, click on connectivity, then click on your account on the right. It will tell you if your line is being shaped.

Can happily report that after the Telkom repairs...and initial few hours of glitch ridden speeds...the line is now running like an absolute monster!

Now I have a great line coupled with an awesome network.

Hi guys, I'm considering moving to Afrihost's 10mb business uncapped bundle at work and have a few questions. Could anyone give me some feedback on this account?

1) How is the shaping during the day?
2) Under what circumstances is the account ever throttled / shaped?
3) Has anyone used Netflix / Hulu during the day on this account, and if so how is the performance?
4) Afriman: Is it possible to get a trial account of the 10mb business uncapped? Even to use for just one day?

Many thanks :)

Hello

1. We do not shape Business- day or night.
2. See number 1.
3. We'll let people answer this for you, there shouldn't be a problem with streaming but we're always happy to investigate.
4. We do not have trial accounts. We have a FREE GB, which you can sign up for but it uses your current line speed.

We don't throttle any of our DSL products (or any of our products at all). We do shape Uncapped (not Business or Capped) from time to time, depending on demand on our network and available capacity - only to ensure that we do not incur high latency which will affect overall experience negatively.

We aim to do as little shaping (or none at all) for as long as we possibly can :)

Thanks for the response :) I was with Afrihost last year (home uncapped bundle) and at the time I remember the Business Uncapped accounts having a rolling window of some sort. X-amount of data would be unshaped within a period of 7 or 10 days or something? Is this no longer the case?

Yup, this is what uncapped should be like.
Required an update yesterday.... only source I could find was torrents (some distribute it via torrents so they don't have to host it)... it went at line speed... in the middle of the day.... :D

Nope, there's no rolling window anymore. Afrihost believes rolling windows should be a thing of the past ;)

Yes, we don't shape Business at all, so that doesn't apply anymore.

No, we did away with thresholds and rolling windows. That was mostly based on our previous network providers framework for managing the network. Our aim was always to give the network to our clients to use to maximum effect.

No we only shape when there is high demand and only in order to preserve low latency real time services. We shape to the least extent possible (or not at all as much as possible) and we always only shape the absolute minimum number of clients (from heaviest users down) to bring demand in line with available capacity.

We never shape real time services - ever ;)

I am also moving to Afrihost Business Uncapped. Currently on 10mb uncapped premium from Mweb. On your site it says my line is 8mb capable where mweb says its 10mb. My speedtest caps out at 6mb/s on this line.

So what I would like to know is should I get the 10mb Package or the 8mb Gold Package and still sync at 6mb/s? its only a R100 difference but if I'm only going to get 6mb/s on the 10mb package might aswell save little.

Post line stats and connection stats. If you're only syncing at 8Mbs there is no need or advantage of having a data plan that is any higher.

It depends on what rate your line can stably sync at. Some line achieve 10Mbps, but fluctuate ever so slightly, to the point where it it's intermittently horrible. Where on 7 or 8 Mbps it becomes rock solid. Unless you are doing downloads or torrents, that extra 2Mbps is usually not very noticeable.

Is your line with Telkom now? Drop me a PM let me look at your stats and give you my opinion :)
