Switching to Ah from mweb, been surviving (somehow) on the 1gb free account. Can somebody verify if I can still get a discount on the pro rata if I sign up? I remember there being something of the sort..

Yup, all of our ADSL packages are pro-rata'd :)
Welcome aboard!

What does the "Static IP" button on Clientzone do? It says that it can give me a static IP for R50 p/m. Does this work as yet? Sorry if this was discussed already but couldn't find any reference to it

Never mind I didn't look very well. It's being discussed in the Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback thread.

Hi Afri team.

I've upgrade to a 4mb account with you guys and my line can only sync at 4mb as well due to my dslam only being 4mb enabled...according to Telkom.

However my line is litterally getting 2mb performance. I get the ocasional speed jump from 200kB to the mid 300kB range...but it drops back down to around 200kB. It honestly feels like a limiter or something.

What's more strange is that I can induce speed spikes that can hit 800kB-990kB consistanty.

Now I know that the Durbanville main exchanges are 10mb and some even 40mb vdsl ready...but if my dslam IS only 4mb capable...how am I getting speed spikes? Now I am aware of exchange congestion etc...however none of my speed tests indicate anything of the sort. I have no high hops or even spikes there.

Could I please ask that someone on your tech side take a look at this?
Let me know who to pm details too. And I know this is not a fault on your side specifically. I just want techincal explanation of what the hell is going in with my lines performance :D

That's VERY strange. Two reasons. Firstly, if your line is only 4Mbps capable in terms of sync rate, it should be physically impossible to spike higher than your sync rate. Secondly, our Uncapped accounts are also rate limited, so the chances of spiking above 4Mbps, even if your line is syncing at a higher rate, are very small - only momentarily if our shaper is being updated or something very one in a million kind of scenario.

So the odds are completely against these data spikes. How are you seeing this? On a torrent client or the like? Are you 100% sure that you're not getting your 3G access - if you're testing from your phone?

Please PM me, I won't be able to sleep now, because this is a very weird :(

YGPM.

And don't know what your wizards are doing...but my average speed just jumped 105kB up to 300kB. Now if it could just stay there...:D

Ok some feedback after 8 days of being on Afrihost - well it's been bloody awesome! Better than Mweb's been in a long long while - in fact it might be better than Mweb ever was. For reference purposes I'm on the 1Mbps service and live on the North Coast of Durbs..

All the real time services are on point - browsing goes on without a hitch - despite higher pings than Mweb, the pages are loading snappier - not just my opinion but everyone at home. Flash website streaming from non popular sites is perfect. Youtube is OK - not 100% but you generally get 360p just with probably 1 pause until it's buffered enough not to stop again - though sometimes it defaults to 240p - for reference it used to do that almost all the time on Mweb in the past year or so.

As for non-realtime stuff - well my linux distros via bittorent have been flying - I expected average performance but honestly on well seeded stuff I've been getting averages of between 95 & 99kb/s when the line is not being used by anything else. I've not been shaped yet, I've averaged 4.25gb a day -that's with me using the line almost all the time but mostly giving torrents a rest between 2PM & 8/10PM. Yesterday though I did 6.5gb on the line - honestly with Mweb I never reached that in the 2 years I've been with them..

Next up the signup was quick & painless, signed up in 15 minutes - line was transferred to Afrihost too - signed up on the 1st of September and the line was transferred by the 4th. Also they've got some interesting tools to sort out the line yourself in the event of problems. So yeah all in all - I'm highly impressed Afrihost as I was when I originally moved to the R29/gb special years back. I hope this continues but so far so good!

Hi,

My experience with Afrihost over the last couple of weeks has been painful. I have a 10mb uncapped account and my area handles 10mb, however over the last couple of weeks the line speed has been between 3-4mb. I've received multiple reasons as to why this is the case but at the end of it there is "nothing" that Afrihost can do (which I find completely unreasonable).

Our area lines were upgraded around 6months ago, and the telkom technicians advised that the area now accommodates up to 20mb (not sure how accurate this is). Apparently my line is linked to an exchange that is over 4kms away and as per a consultant at Afrihost I should make friends with a technician to have my line moved to this new exchange. Why do I need to do this, shouldn't the responsibility for this lie with Afrihost?

Further to this, apparently having a line speed of around 3-4mb is "excellent". Should I be grateful that I'm paying for a service that I'm not receiving?

My interactions with Afrihost started very well (during the sign up process) however after this last incident I find myself considering going back to Telkom or finding another ISP.

Edit ** I've also been told that speed tests done on saix.net is not an indication of line speed. If this is true, why have they asked me to perform these speed tests 4 times during this last interaction?

Sorry for rambling, just really frustrated.

Sorry that you are having such an awful experience. Firstly, sounds like some of our consultants have given you some poor information. Secondly though, our experience of areas that receive VDSL capability take a hammering on congestion, due to the backhaul required. We've seen many examples of exchanges going through several upgrades over a short period to try and cope with the load.

I don't know if that is specifically the case though, so we need to investigate first. If so, congestion relates to the exchange and not the line itself. We can confirm with Telkom if the exchange is congested, but there is no "fault" logging for congestion. A separate Telkom department deals with this according to available budgets, etc. If the problem is the line, then we have more options to explore what can be done to improve the experience.

Please PM me, let's get this sorted out :(

[-]Can anyone else log onto Absa's IB?[/-] Or rather, anyone else having issues?

It worked fine for me last night, but it's buggered today.
The server closed the connection without sending any data.

Using AH's default DNS (197.xx and 8.8.8.8)

Yo Guys

Just a heads up that a new Android update is headed your way!

Will now allow you to manage your Mobile Data (Topups, Usage) along with your DSL products.

Enjoy :)

Do you have a 6mb option on the standard uncapped bundles?
I see the option is listed for business bundles, but not the standard ones.

No, only for business. We feel that our 10Mbps option is affordable enough (especially in bundle) for us not to need one ;)

yes, but Im sure a vast majority of us will be lucky enough to even sync at 6mbps, my 6mbps sync rate only gave me 5mbps max speed on your 10mbps account. A 6mbps bundle at R100 cheaper than the 10mbps one would indeed be a plus I think. i would gladly pay R100 a month more for a 1mbps gain, but I think R200 a month more for a 1mbps gain on a 10mbps account is a waste. :)

That is for damn sure! I am getting that 10mps bundle as soon as telkom will get off their behinds to come and install my phone line! :)
