yes, but Im sure a vast majority of us will be lucky enough to even sync at 6mbps, my 6mbps sync rate only gave me 5mbps max speed on your 10mbps account. A 6mbps bundle at R100 cheaper than the 10mbps one would indeed be a plus I think. i would gladly pay R100 a month more for a 1mbps gain, but I think R200 a month more for a 1mbps gain on a 10mbps account is a waste. :)

Depends on how you look at it. A 4Mbps bundle is R697. A 10Mbps Uncapped account (without line) is R797pm while a bundle is only R897. So it's more like you get the extra data and your line rental for R100. And remember being on a higher tier account means there is more tolerance fro bandwidth consumption - so the same usage pattern is less likely to be shaped than on say, 4Mbps. You get a lot of value for that extra R200 IMHO ;)

I get what you're saying and totally agree. But wouldidnt it make more sence then to stay on 4mbps, but go the business unshaped route? I believe everything including streaming from Netflix should give better performance on 4mbps unshaped vs 10mbps acc on a 5mbps capable line? FYI I will upgrade to business 4mbps now if the unshaped part is better for Netflix. :)

You could also sign up a capped bundle for R697 - that's a 4/10Mbps line with 100GB data. We can pretty much tailor the capped bundles for any needs. I'm pretty sure you can go up to 400GB to create your own custom bundle

Correction.
R697 - 4/10Mbps line with 100GB
R1849 - 4/10Mbps line with 400GB

Hi Guys,

I am about to upgrade to a 20mb line (moving to Afrihost) as I want to stream netflix/hulu etc throughout the house. I have a 4mb but isn't sufficient for 4 tv's and a few mobile devices... Does Afrihost allow the Unotelly and Netflix/Hulu service? I know a lot of service provides block it. Please answer ASAP. Oliver

all indications are that they don't provide "support" for such services but they allow you to use your connection as you deem fit and if you have a problem and ask on this forum one of the AfriTeam might give some advise and the troves of AfriClients may also give you some feedback.

All I can say is WOW! Afrihost, my uncapped package is so much better than Mweb, it's chalk and cheese.

You guys easily have a more superior product and I will shout that from the rooftops.

Thanks guys,I am a very happy client :)

Yes indeed, cant remember a time when I had issues with my Afrihost account (Knocks on wood). Im still just wondering, is there a difference betwean a std 4mbps uncapped account with no shaping vs a business 4mbps unshaped uncapped account regarding speed? Im talking mostly streaming and web browsing here.

Yes, correct, I edited the wrong part of my message there. The standard 4Mbps Capped Bundle is 100GB, but you can go up to 400GB (not 200GB) on a capped bundle. Apologies for that error guys :(

Hi Oliver

It's not a question of us allowing Netflix or Hulu. They do not make their service available to South Africa. Once their geolocation software detects that your DNS points to South Africa, they will block content.

We don't have any issues with using Unotelly or Google Public DNS to get around this, however we do always recommend using our Dynamic DNS for the best possible DSL performance. Some services work well for Netflix, for example, but not so great for Hulu, and general internet services can be slower at times. Also we don't have any control over those DNS clusters, so we can't officially support them :(

In theory there shouldn't be a difference on real time services :)

I normally use Google Chrome with the Hola plugin, we currently stream from one PC and 2 laptops at home on a 4mbps line with no issues. Otherwise you can opt for Unodns or tunlr which is free.

I'm currently on a 4mb uncapped package and in the last couple of weeks I've noticed that my download speeds have pretty much halved. It currently seems to range from around 200-300 kb (regardless of time of day or on weekends) whereas it always used to be > 400kb.

I've done a couple of tracerts and I can't see anything too suspicious:

Tracing route to www.google.com [74.125.233.52]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.0.1
2 8 ms 8 ms 8 ms 105-236-4-193-esr-lo.mtnbusiness.co.za [105.236.
4.193]
3 13 ms 10 ms 10 ms ipc-recieve-tb-2a.mtnbusiness.net [41.181.54.86]

4 15 ms 15 ms 10 ms tb-dca-2.za--qux-c.za.mtnbusiness.net [41.181.19
8.188]
5 11 ms 11 ms 15 ms compj-cpt-1.mtnns.net [196.44.18.2]
6 * 18 ms 17 ms ct-cr-2.za--tb-cr-1.za.mtnns.net [196.44.31.134]

7 56 ms 67 ms 54 ms rb-cr-1.za--ct-cr-2.za-b.mtnns.net [196.44.31.25
0]
8 32 ms 33 ms 36 ms 41.181.139.109
9 34 ms 34 ms 41 ms 72.14.194.74
10 35 ms 35 ms 40 ms 64.233.174.21
11 36 ms 34 ms 37 ms jnb01s01-in-f20.1e100.net [74.125.233.52]

I'm in De Bron (Western Cape), so I'm not 100% sure what exchange I'm using, but judging from the tracert above that doesn't appear to be the issue right (assuming the second hop would indicate any exchange congestion)?

Running Speedtest on the line gives me a download speed of between 1 to 2mb when connecting to the local MTN server.

Any ideas Afriman?

First up. Make sure you are syncing at 4mb and not 3mb. Phone up telkom and ask.

Secondly. Afri-team, any network notices from Telkom regarding line outages? My line is physically dead for last couple of hours :(

Anyone else in the Pinehurst Durbanville area having line outages?

EDIT: Found a notice regarding line outage for my entire area...hmmm. Wonder if this is a fault being fixed or hopefully they are upgrading the dslam. Positive thinking.

I had this once. when I used their turbo charge thing in clientzone it jumped to over the 500KB/s mark and my line had no shaping on it. but was only for one evening though.

Morning.

No I have not. I phoned Telkom and they confirmed that maintenance and upgrades are being done to the exchange and dslams in my area due to the faults logged regarding slow speeds. Also confirmed this via the line. So I will just have to patiently wait for their upgrades and repairs to be completed.

Thank you for the check up +1.

Have you managed to connect this morning?

When you say download speeds, are you talking about speedtest download speeds, or on actual downloading of files. If it's the latter, have you checked if you are being shaped at those times?

Drop me a PM and let me get some more details from you :(
