Yeah something has changed in the last couple of days.
I haven't been shaped in ages and now all of a sudden ClientZone says :Shaping Policy: 75% Download/ 75% P2P

Currently downloading at 98kBs on my 2mb line.

Usage? Mine's back to normal now after last night. 50GB on my 2Mb.

I'm being shaped at: Shaping Policy: 25% Download/ 12.5% P2P from 10am to 1am for the last 3 days. Quite annoying.

Funny enough my torrent was flying last night at about my line speed. Browsing was a bit slow. But I'm not complaining, still waaaaayyyyy better than M-Web.

Then again, I'm only sitting on 74gb on my 2mb uncapped bundle so far this month.

Were you torrenting and browsing at the same time? Probably not a great idea when there is shaping applied. But if a torrent is saturating your line, everything else will be horrible unless you implement your own QoS to prioritise browsing at router or local network level :(

Indeed. I think what many people forget or overlook is that they keep running P2P services at the shaped speed as well as trying to browse and then complain browsing is slow too.

I did this test - had some heavy shaping yesterday. Flicked on a torrent and speed was shaped and then tried to browse and youtube in HD...yeah no. Did not work at all. Even though the torrent was only running at 50kB, it does not mean that the rest of my 4mb line will be perfectly available. I stopped the torrent and whalla - perfect HD streaming full speed.

Cancelled Afrihost, if they want to shape P2P then they should shape only that, and not the rest of my services. If I wanted "iburst-like" service on a 4Mbps line I would have stayed with them!

it amazes me that people don't use a scheduler... Turn your torrents off when you are at home and let them run when you are at work or asleep. That way the shaping doesn't affect you and Afrihost and quietly manage its network without incurring hate fueled comments on forums.

I agree with scheduling torrents. But this shaping is applied to all downloads.

Yes I understand that. I have yet to experience any shaping from Afrihost so I cannot know for a fact whether they live up to the claims of only shaping when they need to.

I see a lot of complaints by CT guy but is anyone in JHB/PTA having shaping issues with Afrihost?

We have 3 Smartphones, a laptop and the main pc on the network. We torrent(Only on main pc), browse, Skype, Facebook, watch Youtube all the time. I don't prioritise anything at router level.

Look I didn't complain. I also know my exchange is congested until about 10 at night. During that time torrents are fine and browsing is sometimes slow.

But I'm still happy and won't change a thing.

Yip I'm in JHB. A co-worker that also stays in JHB is shaped to 18% on downloads.

The network is taking heat. They are shaping to keep real time services running smoothly. I don't see the problem here other than they might have to provision more IPC capacity due to people moving to them from Mweb.

Also if the people would all just set their damn torrents to dl AT NIGHT and not in the day then there would not be a friggin problem.

Anyone else finding NNTP speeds up to cr@p the last 2 months? My NNTP downloads are running at a quarter speed at night, and that is only having downloaded 12GB during the first half of this month. 2mbps uncapped bundle from AH.

edit: I'm in Cape Town, southern suburbs. Non CPT people seem to have nothing but love for AH.

I don't understand this, I am being shaped 50% / 50% but my 4MB line is maxing out at 70 kbps DL regardless of Direct or P2P downloads, shouldn't I be downloading at between 200 and 240, because if its going to be like this after 50GB's every month then I have a really really expensive 1 meg line

http download at 25% and torrent at 12.5% here in joburg. Most likely will be like that through out the day.

Except origin downloads at full speed so I guess its fine....

My NNTP was running at line speed too (I tested to see how the shaper influenced it). Doesn't bother me, I only download in the early mornings.
yip 90% of my downloads occur between 11pm and 7am. I try to download only during quiet times on the network.

Sorry Afriman, I shouldn't have started this -_-

Anyway, guys, its really not hard to schedule downloads/torrents. It doesnt bother me that much that I am getting shaped, I was just wanting to know what had changed so that shaping was applied. I think it may have something to do with shaped people having full like speed (read page 80).

Hopefully it was just a one-night thing.

I commented on page 80 and I did say it was at night. I have no idea what the downloads would be during the day. I normally start one or 2 torrents at about 9pm ish. It will then finish sometime during the night.

I don't torrent 24/7.
