Well guys i been on 4 Meg Business uncapped for the past 2 weeks and must say that i suppose i shouldn't complain although i only get up to full speed around between 12:00 midnight and 7:00 am. My speeds after 17:00 up till 12:00 ( midnight) varies between 170 and 250 k/sec. Is that fine ? Can anyone comment on that ?

@ Afriman One other thing i see when my speeds are down ..............whether i log onto an Afrihost or Openweb or Webafrica account the speeds are pretty similar. Would that mean that my issues if any are on the Telkom line side ?

Definitely exchange congestion there, as you can see your second hop (from your router to your exchange) is high. I suggest going around to some friendly neighbours and doing a tracert on their line? Thats what i did and telkom got our exchange upgraded faster than usual.

Thanks for the love. I must also say that we appreciate that so many heeded our call to schedule their downloads, and, with a little tweaking, we were able to improve the situation hugely :)

Have to agree, since I started doing downloads over night, I've found that I am only shaped for about 4-6 hours a day instead of 14-16. I'm averaging over 10 gigs a day in the last week or so. Keep it up!

Looks like exchange congestion from those results. Seems consistently bad, though there is some intermittent spikes and dips, very consistent with local exchange congestion.

Judging by this and result you posted after, sounds like the line or exchange congestion. What are your trace routes showing?

Drop me a PM and we'll see what the cause might be.

I hope murphy doesn't strike me down for saying this but ... Afrihost has been fantastic since I re-joined after they sorted out the CPT IPC.

I change ISP's more times than <insert some clever comparison here> and even though it feels weird being with one ISP for more than 2 months, I wont be changing ISP's any time soon.

Good job AH.

That's great to hear. Let's hope you've found a home with us! Changing ISP's monthly can't be fun ;)

Okay Afriman - I have to post this in public.

Afrihost has been the BEST ISP ever. You guys listened to us down here in cape town. Not once have I been shaped this month after we reported the shaping in CPT. It really is great to have an ISP that listens to your problems, and tries to solve them.

For sure, I haven't seen any shaping on my line in CT since at least last week Friday:D. And yes it is truly refreshing to have an isp that actually has a two way dialogue with their clients!

Just did a trace now

As I said in our PM, definitely looks like congestion to me, or some local infrastructure issue.

Actually havent done a speedtest after 12 midnight. All i know is the speeds go up to 420 k/s after 12 so can only only be that. Telkom always has some excuse to justify not taking the blame. I actually went to the telkom offices locally and was told in quiet basic terms that the exchange is overloaded. But then they also say port i am on is only 60% utilised.

I am not an adsl boffin so i guess ................ it ends there

LOL

Well, the port/card you're on may not be full, but it depends on when and how much everyone on your exchange is downloading. especially if there are more people than there have been on 4Mbps and 10Mbps lines. The jump from 4 to 10 is more than double, so it creates a huge strain on the exchange. At the end of the day, all the traffic runs through the same backhaul, so if they upgraded cards and not the backhaul, it's just a recipe for congestion.

Rondebosch Area sitting with a 75% shaping policy?

Any reason as to why?

General or just me?

As soon as the compliment was given re: no shaping the "Oh we forgot to switch it on!" bell rang! See IMHO they were testing the mobile data thingy and switched the shaping proggy off and screwed up the data records.................

Please tell me this latency is afrihost and not congestion.

It is Afrihost! Happy? If you want the truth then post a trace route! You sound like the wife, she is fat and 50 and says you don't say I am pretty anymore!

Some feedback on my 4Mbps business account: Youtube, Steam, the Play Store, torrents, http downloads and streaming in general are all running at full speed. Such a pleasure. Youtube actually works at 720p. Long may this continue! I've never been so happy with an ISP.

Have you ever watch live streaming on www.supersport.com? I also have a Business 4Mbps uncapped account, but any video on this side has continuous buffering, never had this when I was with mweb. Mweb had issues with YouTube though. I often watch the sport on supersport, so this is a real issue for me.
