Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Have you ever watch live streaming on www.supersport.com? I also have a Business 4Mbps uncapped account, but any video on this side has continuous buffering, never had this when I was with mweb. Mweb had issues with YouTube though. I often watch the sport on supersport, so this is a real issue for me.

Are you only having problems with Supersport streaming or are other services affected? Feel free to private message me.

Please tell me this latency is afrihost and not congestion.

One way for us to tell is if you post a traceroute. Are you still having problems?
Feel free to PM me with your traceroute and username. We'll investigate further.

I don't use Supersport's streaming services. Just created an account on their site and tried to watch the Monaco F1 highlights. It doesn't seem to stream perfectly unless you pause it for a while, so watching live might be a pain. I think this has more to do with Supersport (and possibly the location of their servers) than Afrihost. It's a horrible website and a horrible media player.

Thanks for testing. Ja the player is really crap, similar to the dstv on demand site.

Some heavy shaping in CT at present...or is that just me? 25% / 12.5%

Not that I mind really...

Am I right in assuming that when shaping is applied it get's applied across all users? Or all users for a particular area? Since Afrihost does not shape on a user to user bases but rather on network demand I was curious about this...

EDIT: And as I typed this - it went up to 50% / 25%. :D

Hi Afriman , Afrigirl

I noticed that my IP doesn't change any more or recently , even if I disconnect and reconnect after 15 minutes. Is this the static IPs for the business uncapped ?

Shaping Policy: No Shaping Applied.

EDIT: I've only done 39GB this month because of shaping, and other exchange crappyness.

Interesting...I've used 36GB so far this month...and am in Durbanville. Still same shaping as above. So it seems they do shape on a user to user level when network is under pressure. Noted.

If you connect and reconnect in a short period of time, you could end up getting the same IP. If your leave your router off for about 10- 15 mins, you'll get a different IP or if you switch accounts, you'll get another IP.

Yes, that is correct. That is part of our shaping policy. We try shape the least amount of people to the least extent but if the network continues to be under pressure, more people get affected.

Hi Afri team,

If i purchase a modem/router from you guys online...when will the debit order go through?

Will it be invoiced with my usual month invoice?

Regards
Malooga

We process the debit order immediately, that is to say we submit the request to the bank. For debit orders it can take up to 5 working days for the payment to clear, and we only begin the configuration and shipping process once this is complete. Credit cards clear instantly, so shipping takes places a lot faster :)

Thanks for the reply, was getting excited :(

Any news update on the static IPs ?

No worries. Which router you in the market for? :)

Well, at the modem i want to find a modem router for around R500 cause my current one is on its way out... but the idea is to eventually bridge it, and connect it to a powerful wireless router. I'm trying to stay away from an all-in-one type of device. I like the idea of having the 2 devices separated in case one of them break. I'm focusing around Asus and Dlink and maybe Linksys.

Thank you for clearing that up :)

I'm at work almost half a day anyway, so don't really mind the shaping in the day time ;D

As long it's pumping at night and after hours

I don't buy it. May, June and 1st half of July everyone in CPT was shaped to nothing almost continuously. From two weeks back suddenly NO shaping 24/7 - managed to actually get bandwidth approaching the pre MTN and IPC disaster of the last year. Suddenly now back to heavy shaping. Your period of absolutely no shaping and continuous full speed downloads up until a few days ago in CPT really have me wondering to what extent this is really about overall "usage patterns" as opposed to bandwidth cost management.

We sell the netgear range, we do have the N150 which is a decent wireless router for R595. It doesn't have quite the wireless range and features of the N300, but should be more than adequate for normal home use. The netgear repeaters are pretty decent, I'll also tried Huwawei repeaters which are very small but powerful.

As we stated several times, there was a large window off peak that was virtually guaranteed unshaped, so there was never 24/7 shaping at any point in time. We appealed to users here, and as much as we could to others, to schedule more downloads during this time, to free up available bandwidth during peak demand. This definitely made some effect, and we also ran some vital updates on the IPC and local network to make our management more efficient in terms of how we route traffic and how we shape for best overall experience. This has clearly compounded into a better overall experience. There is still definitely shaping happening in the South, but the overall effect seems to be a lot less disruptive and unpleasant.

We still encourage everyone to schedule downloads and torrents for off-peak (like between 12am and 8am) as much as possible so that we in turn can shape as little as possible on the network.
