Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

When one's own experience deviates from just about EVERYONE else's then, just perhaps, one's issues don't reflect the general state of affairs.

Heck, even the guy accusing me of being a fraudster is having problems with Afrihost performance himself. Would you like to reword your sentence a bit maybe?

...dalk is dit n goeie ding dat die ISP's so rond neuk...Dit bring n ou af op jou knee...en leer jou weer bid.

You'll see the 'just about' in there, so no thanks, I'll leave my sentence as it stands.

So, a little update on just how fast Afrihost can go. I tried starting 8 concurrent downloads and my download speed peaked at 80kB/s. That's the fastest I've seen Afrihost go in a while, but it did take a lot of concurrent downloads to get there. Normally I get about 20-25kB/s with a single download.

As I mentioned previously, this definitely sounds like a problem affecting you, not necessarily the entire network. I appreciate that it must be frustrating, but I can't really help without specific tests and information to identify the problem. I need to know what is running on your network, we need to run traces to the sites giving you issues, and do comparative tests.

If you're keen to get this solved, I am very willing to help, so please drop me a PM :)

Ai... :(

That definitely does not sound normal. For interest sake what are your line stats from your router?

Yeah, that's the funny thing... I asked Afrihost 2 weeks ago to downgrade my ADSL line in the hope that maybe it would help relieve some of the issues, but so far nothing has happened. Current stats are:
Sync speed: 3072kbps down 512 up (this is what my line is locked to)
Noise margin: 8dB down 12dB up
Attenuation: 54dB down 31dB up

And just because you guys seem to love speedtest.net so much (even though it is known to be wildly inaccurate)...

I envy you :)

Doesn't really matter. I never get remotely good speeds no matter what. Can be a simple picture from Imgur that takes half a minute to load, it can be a small-ish ISO file that would take almost 3 hours to download without using a concurrent downloader or anything else for that matter. The thing I just managed to download in a little under an hour with 8 threads is http://caesar.acc.umu.se/debian-cd/7.1.0/amd64/iso-cd/debian-7.1.0-amd64-netinst.iso - a 222MB file.

I'm just very afraid that Afrihost will involve Telkom in it somehow. It's not more than 2 months ago that Telkom (apparently asked to by Afrihost) decided to "fix" my ADSL line, which resulted in an internet connection that couldn't stay online for more than a few minutes at a time for a week before it got just semi-fixed. A slow internet connection is after all better than no internet connection at all.

Afriman should know me well by now, though. I sometimes feel he's being overworked with just the messages he's getting from me.

just remember...the MAX you can get on a 2mb line, is 256kB/s...the "norm" is "real speed" times 85 to 90% = +- 230kB/s

Please don't EVER feel like you can't chat to me or PM me when you are having an issue. I'm not here to make complaints go away by any means necessary. I'm here to help people get a great internet experience. Believe me, if there was ever a case when we could not do so, I'm the first to admit it. However, my experience has always been with the right testing and analysis, we can always find a solution to deliver the best possible experience, or at the very least find solid reasons to explain what our clients are experiencing.

We don't want clients feeling angry or cheated by the service we provide. We not just looking for a quick buck today, we believe real success comes out of keeping clients for life - and that is always where our focus lies.

Anyway, mini-rant over! PLEASE PLEASE always feel free to PM me at any time and I will make sure that you get some assistance :)

...now i'm re-considering :(

Has THIS situation been rectified?

I think I may have missed this post somewhere along the line. Did sand_man post a traceroute? Please do so if you are out there, or drop me a PM. We'll definitely take a look at this :(

Look, Afriman, I know you're doing a lot to help Afrihost, and in fact (as I also mentioned in your recent survey), if it wasn't for you and I had to rely on the normal Afrihost support channels, I would have stopped being a customer a year ago. Thumbs up for your great service. However, where is my ADSL line downgrade at? :P It's been 2 weeks now and I'm still at the higher speed.

Just want to share my experiences more with Afrihost International lately as I've been posting about. I was given an account by Afrihost to test with, here are my results:

My account Local (excellent) : http://speedtest.ookla.com/result/2258593764.png
My account International (poor) : http://speedtest.ookla.com/result/2258594511.png

Their Account Local (excellent): http://speedtest.ookla.com/result/2258608596.png
Their Account International (poor) : http://speedtest.ookla.com/result/2258612413.png

So, that's interesting. My account has poor international speed, their account has poor international speed. I have passed this onto Afriman and the Critical Care team as well.

Don't worry. In HapticSimian's words, "JUST ABOUT EVERYONE ELSE" is having no issues at all with Afrihost, so you obviously don't matter :D

I would just like to have my Internet connection restored. My telephone went dead on Saturday (10/08/2013) and its still not fixed. No Internet for 5 days and trying to run a business is not ideal. Cant use wireless as I am close to a mountain and reception is crap.

Are you really that dense? Some guy asked about the performance of Afrihost. I told him about the performance of Afrihost based on about a year of experience. Now you're calling me a fraudster? Excuse me, come again? Do you wish to apologise for that?

A YEAR AGO? You led me to believe that you were a CURRENT subscriber of Afrihost! You are not therefore you are a FRAUDSTER!

MSG 365
"When Afrihost went south last year, I bought a prepaid account with Plugg. It's been working just fine ever since. "

I get 350 KB/s from Astraweb and 150 from news.afrihost.co.za! on my 4 meg line.......... It is ONLY new.afrihost.za that is a problem NOT Afrihost.

That's to be expected though. Afrihost has always had a slow news server. It's just a complementary service.

You miss a lot of posts, as I mentioned before, MyBB sends you to the end once you post and you have to find your own way back.

I'm sorry that you're both unable to read and unable to apologise - would you like to try either of the two again?
